I spent some time in the mid-90s playing and working in the pro shop at the academy. I even spent a short period working at his short-lived restaurant and preparing for its opening. He was an intense, but very nice man and he was obviously an expert at the game and business of tennis/sports.
I wanted to go to his academy so bad when I was a high school player in the late 1980's. I had a couple NB Academy t-shirts and a sweatshirt I loved wearing. RIP Nick.
RIP. Also feel the need to speak up to the shadow side of Nic- I went to his tennis academy 1980 for one year. I was 14 yrs old. He was extremely verbally abusive to me and all the athletes. For years after that time I suffered from ptsd. He would scream at the top of his lungs like the x marine he was. There were many people that were shattered by his extremely critical method. Let’s appreciate what he did but not ignore that he was a fallible human who verbally abused many young talented athletes.
I read that he spent most of his time fawning over the half dozen or so "stars" he had at his academy and paid no attention to anyone else. He left the rest of his students (who were paying handsomely to be there) to his dozens of dime a dozen tennis "coaches"....
He ruined women’s tennis with the grunt tactic to cheat and cover up the ball spin noise. Sick to death of women grunting . Glad he won’t be coaching anybody else, but still RIP Nick.
A tennis legend!

And taught people to cheat by grunting loud.
