I use a wading staff a lot on SolDuc and Calawah during winter steelhead. And wear a PFD. It’s like walking on bowling balls. Not easy getting old…

Love my Folstaf. Get yourself a gear keeper retractor to keep it against your side when not in use. Keep the ferrules waxed and if they do get stuck just give them a tap with a rock.

I would suggest you check out a Simms wadding staff, same price range but much better quality and comes with a great retractor so you won’t be dragging your staff down the river.

I am a huge proponent of wading staffs, but a $150? (and I know there are ones that cost even more). $35 one works just as good and you'll feel a lot better if you accidentally leave it sitting against a rock. I did that with my first one, and then 2 years later found an identical one up against a boulder in the middle of nowhere.

Even in Eastern rivers, I wouldn't trust the $35 staffs to hold the average person's weight when they are most needed -- as support in big currents (including those one enters unintentionally) and support going up or down steep banks. After 40 years (and one restringing by the company), even my Folstaff has taken on a curve. Plus, the short sections of the Folstaff don't get in the way of my line the way the long, dangling holsters used in four-piece staff do.

Uh...it's down river not up river.
