  • Most of the time, herringbone (ndebele) stitch is started with a ladder stitch base. But you don't have to do it that way! Here's a method for starting herringbone so it mimics the working end! I show both flat and tubular versions.

    The article in Bead and Button that Jill mentioned is in the issue dated June 2010. It's on page 11 under Tips and is called "Jump-start herringbone stitch" and was written by Kassie Inman of Asheville, NC. Jiil, you explained this better then the article in Bead and Button. Plus being able to see how it's done makes a world of difference. Thank you so much for sharing your talents!!!! Cheri

    Whoo hoo Jill, After watching this video I dug out the triangle beads I picked up three years ago at my very first Bead and Button show here in Milwaukee just coz I thought they were cool. Now ,I had found SOME projects that I might want to use them in, But until I saw this herringbone rope made with them I didn't find THE project to make with them! And starting the herring bone this way is so much easier! Thanks so Much! My rope is turning out beautifully!!!!

    Thanks so much for this video! I was looking for instructions on tubular herringbone, and they all started with the ladder stitch. Then, I found this one showing why this isn't a good way to start. Thankfully, I haven't started yet, so I can do a piece that will look the way I want it to. I've been subscribed for a while now, but I'm still finding gems.

    A message for Jill :)
    I love your videos Jill, you're one of my favourites. And I know nothing about beading compared to you....buuut I find this very curious. It's not particularly hard but does get pretty awkward. There is a far far simpler way to get the same result and I can only imagine that it is just one of those things that you kick yourself over, once you realise that maybe you weren't seeing the wood for the trees! What I did the very first time I did herringbone actually (just because it popped right into my head at that time) is start with the ladder stitch which is much easier and then do exactly what you do here and unpick the first row.
    What I learned from this video is to put the stop bead after the ladder stitch row, whereas before I always added one on after unpicking.
    I hope this helps others too. :D

    You can also make starter strips and tubes. Use them the same way you use a starter strip of peyote or the Quick Start Peyote cards. After 6-8 rows, pull out the tail from the starter. It’s also nice to have something to hold onto during the first few rows.

    I am wondering if you have tried to use the quick start peyote cards for flat herringbone? It would be nice to see which technique you prefer between the one in the video and by using the qsp-cards.

    OMG Jill! This was the very first method I learned when ndebele first came out, umpteen years ago (I am dating myself). When the ladder start came out, I thought that was a great improvement, because of the wonkiness of the first few rows in the first method! How would it be if you did your traditional ladder stitch start and then stripped the ladder stitch rows after doing a few rows of regular herringbone, just as you have done above? Easier? Please advise.

  • @TheRochelletr
    @TheRochelletr 3 роки тому

    Your stitching will be clockwise or counterclockwise depending on how you fold your taco. If you see it's going the wrong way for you when you make the join, loosen your join thread enough to allow you to turn your piece inside out and then tighten up your join thread. You will find that the direction has been reversed.
