- Let's talk about money. Polish money! It might be useful for you to know the Polish currency when you visit Wroclaw or any other city in Poland.
In this episode we review coins and banknotes one by one.
Do you plan to visit Wroclaw during your vacations or business trip and would like to know more about it? Or do you already live here or nearby and would like to learn more about the places you see every day?
Welcome to my channel "Wroclove with Monika" where you can hear interesting facts about Wroclaw's culture, history and people.
There used to be women featured on Polish banknotes in the 1930s. Emilia Plater was on the 20 zloty. There were other women but I don't know their names.
I'm going to Warsaw next month. I'll be sure to collect as many bank notes and coins as I can 👍
I've been all over Western Europe but this is the first time I'm visiting Eastern Europe. I'm a little bit nervous I have to say 😬 not sure what to expect.
Hi! Don't worry. Poland is similar to the Wester Europe. More people speak English in Warsaw than in Paris, I think. You can pay by card here amlost everywhere. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. This episode can be useful for you too:ua-cam.com/video/I5uPgmqjFaU/v-deo.htmlsi=_qwYzlBzRfqZint2
@wroclovewithmonika Thanks. Much appreciated
I plan to visit Poland, Hungary, Czechia, Romania and Bulgaria this year too. I'm looking forward to it.
I was really surprised to see Jan III Sobieski on a 500 PLN banknote! I thought (King) Jadwiga had been chosen because I remember seeing that version on the internet (I've never seen a 500 PLN banknote live though, although I'm Polish :D). I've just checked that the Jadwiga version is a collector banknote, but not an official one unfortunately. This is the explanation I found:
"The design of a banknote with the Queen has been ready since 1994, but the 500 PLN banknote with Queen Jadwiga was not put into circulation because the design with Jan III Sobieski, who had recently entered into circulation, was chosen.
The National Bank of Poland explained that Jadwiga on the 500 PLN banknote would disturb the order in which successive rulers appear on banknotes. If the 10 PLN features Mieszko, the 20 PLN features Chrobry, then Kazimierz the Great, Jagiełło and Zygmunt Stary, then the 500 PLN should feature the king who reigned after the penultimate Jagiellon, and Sobieski was chosen."
By the way, you can google the Jadwiga version if interested.
I love your reserach about Jadwiga. Yes, it is such a shame she is not on the official 500 banknote.
No I preferred to pay euro than złoty
And it is the legal monetary unit of EU
Since Poland is a part of EU it is just and right to pay in euros
Hi, yes, true, and I agree with you, but not sure we will have EURO in Poland any time soon.
Great video, but although I do have a question. Why is the 500 Zloty banknote rarely used? I've been wondering why that for a few years now!
Hi NathansBanknotes2, I think it is because in everyday use people in Poland don't pay such large amount at one cash transaction, even with today's inflation. So, for example if you pay for a grocery shopping 140 PLN, you will use your 200 banknote or 100 and 50 banknote. it is esier to give the change. What's more remember that number of the 500s banknotes on the market are much smaller than 100s or 200s, so it may be difficult to even have 500 in your wallet. Plus, paying by card is more convinient, so I don't think the situation with the 500s will improve. Let me know if this is helpful. :)
What are the cheapest Kantors in Warsaw?
Hi, sorry I can help you only for Wroclaw, don't know kantors in Warsaw. I would recommend to search in google and skip those in the very center or in the main street or shopping centers as they usually are more expensive. Good luck!
@@wroclovewithmonika I appreciate your suggestions! Thanks a lot!
I have 100, 500, 1000 denominations printed in 1982. Are they valid in Poland?
Hi! I have some of these too. They are not valid in Poland anymore. They can be sold online if you interested, their value ranges between PLN 30-200 each, it depends on the series. But I would keep them for the time being. Maybe in the future they will be worth more. Good luck!
Thank you very much ❤@@wroclovewithmonika
That’s old Polish Złoty they don’t have value at all
Those are the communist złoty
The PLN does have dated 1994 or 2012 only
For 500 zł since it was new in the club that’s dated 2018
I wonder why the 1 grosz coin is still a thing here, when the neighbouring countries are phasing out the circulation of 1 and 2 euro-cent coins, and Czechia has 1 korun (abt. 16 groszy) as its smallest denomination.
Good question! I think 1, 2,5,10 and 20 groszy should be eliminated. People don't like them in their wallets anyway.
wow that's really awesome - I never thought about the women on the banknote... why polish zloty don't have one? it's a little bit sad... Maybe we can change in the future that thing 🤷🏻♀️
The new 1000 bill will feature a queen it will be released in a few years
actually fun fact - jadwiga was crowned a king, not a queen
All those sound like great men
Some men are great
All women are women
Well said and so true! :)
