wonderful song. listened to it for nigh on 30 years and ı still don't tire of it. (He loves a bit of alliteration too ''Barrelling down the boulevard'' ''magic of the melancholy'' et al......as I do when I write!) I get so tired of inane words in songs.....but not his.
Just messing around and came across this one...... Haven't heard it in years....... As I listened to it I found myself, in the past, in the same spot as the narrator..... funny how things like that happen, a story that seems to be written about you...........
@@daverenick5830 ...absolutely. i use to hate his music. I really did, I just didnt get it. It took a solid year of me listening to Tom Waits before I finally figured him out .... now I dont go a day without listening to him. I now own every cd he has made. Watch a documentary on him, it helps a lot. Theres a few here on youtube. ✌
I like your interpretation of Tom Wait's use of "second cousin". I think it is too emphasize the distance he feels on Saturday nights, a time commonly associated with the engagement of companions, but as time passes the loneliness catches up and the heart of Saturday nights becomes evident.
I love this song . Tom Waits showing why he is one of the best lyricists out there .

This has one of my favorite phrases, for a long time, stumblin onto the heart of saturday nite. I remember neon buzzin ... such good stuff thanks Tom
The perfect storm bar scene brought me here.
He paints a picture.

This song is played during one of the bar scenes in the movie The Perfect Storm.

Amazing talent. Subscribed...
the road is long
Does the second cousin symbolically represent mortality? Rickie Lee Jones uses the same expression on Ghost Train.

Tom and Ricki Lee were friends so maybe they shared few lyrics
I think it may be a satiric reference to one's next of kin.
This is *NOT KARAOKE*
