Marko Hietala is indeed a legend. This past year, the music world has been so much quieter and sadder a place without his shining light. God, I miss Marko.
@@Lynnya76 he was doing Raskasta Joulua but i think he got a cold. Antii who was also doing Raskasta Joulua has pneumonia and Tony Kakko is sick too. I think its the season for that in Finland.
this is about 10 years after his surgery and this isn't early in his career either. He started tarot in the 80s and it was already quite popular back then.
What he says in Finnish at the beginning is that lets see if we can make you cry...and sure he makes me cry with his singing...such great singer and musician and Tarot was sure a great band.
His voice on that last phrase… That was my favorite part of this performance. So soft and flattery, but the lows gave me shivers because they were so full , resonant and rich and soft at the same time.
Thank you for highlighting Tarot, and Marco's incredible vocal prowess! He does make it seem effortless, esp during transitions up to higher notes. Marco is a multi-instrumentalist, including a masterful bassist. The bass is the heart, so to speak, of a band...and as a listener, you feel that heart through his singing as well. Though his surgery was long ago, hearing him in say. 1996...he still had *it*, that special talent that we all admire from him still. The years have obviously made him even more powerful and controlled, but the beautiful clarity of his singing is as it was when he was young. And I actually prefer when he sings in Finnish...the linguistic sounds are far more lyrical and interesting. The man is gifted...as are we, to enjoy his talents!
Greetings from Finland & thanks for this reaction. P.S. Marko lost his high falsetto because the surgeon accidentally damaged a nerve in Marko's vocal chords during the operation in 1996.
Love how you described the part the bass plays in a song and how it gives a song body. I used to play in a guitarensemble when I was in school (classical guitar) on orchestral guitars and my absolute favourite was playing the acoustic bass. The harmonies were often simple but depending on how and what notes I put the emphasis on, I could change the character of the song. Give it a swinging feeling, build to a high or hold back, make it soft or harsh etc. And since there are no drums in an ensemble the bassguitar was also to a big extent driving the beat. If I slacked off and didn't follow our director everyone fell behind. It was so much fun. And it gave me a deep appreciation of how important the bass is for the character of a song or a piece.
Great reaction Charlie 😄👍 guess who will see Marko LIVE tomorrow evening at Gatorade-arena, Turku Finland....JIHHUUUU!!🤘🤘🤩 "Raskasta Joulua"-concert coming to town, AWESOME! MARKO ❤❤ ...by the way; have you already checked: Waltari feat. Marko Hietala, Below Zero 2021? You should...😁🤘Enjoy your weekend!
I just love the Undead Indeed gig...so jealous of anyone that attended! For me Tarot was always Marko's best band...there are so many other incredible songs for you to hear from them, Tides is one of my favourites though
Marco is amazing you should check I Walk Forever with him and Tommi (keyboards) or his solo album before he stepped away Pyre of the Black Heart in his native language or english
You really should listen Tarot's FIRST album, "The spell of Iron", published 1986. You can hear 20 year old Marko already having the foundation laid quite well, which might help you even more on your journey of understanding human voice.
I’m sure it can be streamed from all major platforms. Considering your profession, you should be interested in the fact that Tarot re-recorded the album in 2011 (not remastered: that they did in 2006) as ”The Spell of Iron MMXI”, so you can actually compare Marko singing the same songs on studio recording as 20 and 45 years old.
Glad you like the idea. You could compare the same songs performed by him pre-surgery and post surgery as well as with 25 years more experience in between, studio recordings eliminating the variables that are inevitable in live performances.
I didn’t know that about polyps on the vocal cords. Interesting! I don’t know if it ended up better or worse for Marko, because he’s still a vocal beast.
I'm so so sad Marko isn't doing heavy Xmas this year. It's gonna be a bit of a blergh Xmas I reckon. You wanna see very very young Marko? Tarot Wings of Destruction. Tides is always in my driving playlist
Definitely is still singing. He's the busiest retired man I've ever seen ua-cam.com/video/CcPER7WIMHM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/dHI64gOj6Tg/v-deo.html Two of his latest featured performances check out his infectious smiles both released in the last few months
Here is it. I translated it both English and Finnish what Marko said at the beginning. "Nyt aiotaan nimittäin testata että saadaanko teidät kyyneliin. Toivon mukaan. jos ei, niin sekin välttää kyllä. Saa olla muuten vaan murheellinen. Seuraavan piisin aloittaa Janne Tolsa. Se on nimeltään Tides." / "Now we're going to test if we can bring you to the tears. Hopefully. If not, It will be fine too. You can be sad, just for otherwise. This next song will start Janne Tolsa. It's called Tides."
@@jeffwolinski2659 My apologies. You are correct. Unfortunately, I am new to Tarot. Is it Zachary that sings in their song "Wings of Darkness"? Or, is that still Tommi?

Have you seen the colab he did recently?
Look for Mika Jaakola lap steel. It's great!

He also sang on the latest Therion record.
Waltari's Below Zero redo is even better, I think it's one his best vocals.
great singer, also a fantastic bassist, legend.
Gutarist, cellist, drummer etc.

That last phrase + when it first explode at the beginning @5:16.
Marko is a handsome man indeed! Specially with all that hair!!! 😅. Thanks Charlie! I love all your reactions/analysis! ❤️
True Viking and living Legend !!!
Marko Hietala 🤘😎🤘.
I would like to recomend High Hopes Nightwishs cover of the Pink Floyd
song. One of the best Marko showcases
Marco's brother, Zachary Hietala, plays guitar in Tarot.

Did you ever look at some of the earlier Tarot stuff? There's a great TV performance of Wings Of Darkness which I think is from 1986 😁
At the point that this video was made, Marko was singing for 20 years in Tarot.
Check out Powerless Trio and Northern Kings with Marko ❤️
U should listen Tarot' original song called sleepless . Marco shows really his ability on those long lasting high notes

This is absolutely fantastic, I highly recommend to everyone👍
Definitely! What a performance!

One of the reason why i this song. Is because it’s obviously the type of blues based Metal. That i really like to listen to.
marko sound like god

Yeah this would be an amazing comparison video. Dude has had a LONG career with so much change. Great idea

The bass is what all the possible harmonics springs out from, so yeah, it would probably help for a singer who plays an instrument. :)
Next Mika Jaakkola & Marko Hietala 2021.

Polyp is the abreviated somewhat adaptation of a Greek word : Πολύπους which translates "multi-legged"

Tony was scared of damaging his voice which is why he has been singing in his natural register.
Tarot beats Nightwish hands down:)

The harmony in the chorus is actually done by Marko's brother, Zachary Hietala.
Zachary doesn't sing much, that's Tommi Salmela singing, he's on the other side of Marko.
