They were probably only going to sign Giolito and see where things went and if need be add at the deadline but the Sox good spring and pressure from fans were pushing them to have more and more talks with Monty but this changes everything. Signing Monty with a healthy Giolito is a potential wildcard contender but without Giolito adding Monty doesn't get them any closer then Giolito by himself. Sure Monty is a better pitcher but will the increase in salary get them over the Wild Card limit probably not so now the Sox ownership can throw up their hands and say well there's nothing we can do and ride the group they got while all the young talent spends another year in the minors. Just curious, but is there any pitcher that has gone the internal brace route? It's not apples to apples but Brock Purdy seemed to do ok after getting the internal brace procedure done. I don't know how severe Giolito's injury is but if it's not too bad, the brace might be an option?
Maybe it's just me but players shouldn't say things like that to the media. It's pretty much telling your teammates you'll be going into battle with that they aren't good enough. Bring it to the GM in private.
The "velocity era" will be known for destroying the arms of many pitchers who would've been HOF worthy. The league is eventually going to have to step in and set some guidelines so seemingly every pitcher doesn't spend years of his career on the IL. It's bad for the sport, bad for fans, and unhealthy for the players.

I (and many of you) know of the home-grown players Boston has lost over the past few years. Adding this all up, the disaster we see now is 4K, HiDef clear. This can happen to any team, at any time. Even the Orioles aren't immune to setbacks. Kyle Bradish may miss all of this season with a UCL problem of his own. John Means is coming off Tommy John. His rehab this offseason isn't sufficient enough, which has put his return on hold for at least the first month of the season. That leaves Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez as the only SPs I know by name. Who will fill out the rest of the rotation is anyone's guess. Anyway, Boston, gotta keep your homegrown talent. Don't trade too many nor lose them to free agency where they either become stars on another team or continue to rake as their career progresses.

I don't think it does anything for Scott Boros because it confirms the wisdom of not committing to a long term contract. It might make for a higher priced short term deal however.
