Vintage computers like this just don't feel right without real hard drives. That background sound is a part of the experience. Still, it's nice that people are archiving all of this rare media. Given how locked down today's devices are becoming, it won't be long before the days of manually installing consumer operating systems and even making software-level changes to our devices are behind us. Sad to think.

      That's why I build my own rigs.😉

That's why I go for older computers.
Lenovo ThinkCentre M82 (Intel Core i5-3570)
Dell Latitude E7450 (Intel Core i5-5300U)
They're old computers, but at least I can run Linux on them and replace stuff if need be.
The hell with locked down computers.

In the future operating systems will go to the cloud so we may not be install them on our personal computers

Always awesome to find the restore CD and experience the factory image. A few years ago when I got my HP Vectra I was stunned to find the restore CDs for the exact model available on internet archive. Factory images can be quite the nostalgia trip for both better and for worse

I had one of these when I was in 4th grade. The first computer my family bought.. We were given an old Tandy (which I played a ton of Doom and Wolf3d on) and a Mac II before that. But man. I played the hell out of some Diablo 1, Delta Force 2, a massive ton of Newgrounds games. I remember my old man playing some StarCraft, WarCraft, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, and some Civ II on that machine. Great times. I miss old tech and how great playing around with it felt.

Is there no on-screen keyboard with 98? I remember using that as a workaround once but can't recall the OS.

Did you get one with the gateway keyboard and more that this system came with in order for this system to work with the original install?

I have one of these and here’s how you get around the obstacle of not having a gateway keyboard and mouse.
Install the Gateway restore CD. When you get to the welcome screen where you can’t input anything, turn off the computer. Insert a Windows 98 SE disc, and install that.
Windows 98 keeps your previously installed Windows files and programs. You’ll be able to boot into windows and still have all of the necessary drivers and the software that Gateway included.
    Hope this helps someone.

Do these have the optional display cache memory onboard? In my experience 810/815 video is pretty good for late 90s 3D games, not maxxed out 60fps of course but it's comfortably playable at half decent settings and the onboard memory definitely improves it. Expect to be playing around with game settings for a bit to find the optimal balance. I have definitely noticed better performance running under ME so I recommend trying that if you want to try games on this thing

Hey - I happened to buy an Astro online. It has the original Installation from 1999, and I really don't want to wipe it. Problem is, I an using the Non-OEM keyboard and mouse and when Windows Boots, it asks for a prompt to click "Next" for Windows Hardware Manager to install the driver. Odd thing is, the Keyboard and Mouse work in BIOS and in Windows in Safe Mode. Also, do you happen to have a link to the Astro Restore Disk? Would love to have access to that. Again, Thank you! EDIT: LOL I remember watching this a while back.... I will have to get my hands on a legacy PC and get the drivers installed. Thanks!

I have one of these with a broken CD-Rom drive. The chassis covering it looks damn near impossible to remove. Have you had any luck replacing that?

Couldn't you accomplish the same by starting up in Safe Mode and removing the proprietary keyboard and mouse drivers, then boot normally again?
