My wife and I manage a storage facility. When we started at our current location, we cleaned out an abandoned unit that had a half-dozen CRT monitors and TV's. I googled alternatives to throwing them away, stumbled on Moose Scrapper's videos on UA-cam, and I've been hooked ever since.

I started as a child with my mom and dad, and now my son is a third generation scrapper. Granted he's 6 and mostly collects cans, aluminum, and copper; but he's been doing it since he was 2 so not a bad start lol. Love your videos and content. Keep doing the thing!

You just described my family. I was taught to scrap metal and recycle cardboard & newspaper. While my parents made money from those items I made money as a child from hubcaps. Now with high property taxes I'm selling scrap metal to cover the tax bill.
Another viable option if you're bored but not broke is searching for online auction companies that work with retail stores. Retail chains that need to close a store will often partner with a third party auction company that sells the unwanted contents of closed stores for (potentially) SUPER cheap. The first time I did this I paid $7 for all the items I won and scrapped it for $130. The most recent auction I won an entire 12x26x8 walk-in freezer for $0.13 which included the big cooling fans and all the copper drain lines 😁 definitely something to keep an eye on if there's a store closing in your area.

@@thubprint for that particular Auction Company every item starts at $0.10 and I was the only one who bid on it. That was my most profitable online purchase so far by a very large margin!
Really like your philosophy and i have almost identical strategy. Ive recently lucked outbig time and have been assisting a retired pipe yard owner. Im responsible for cutting down and loading his unwanted pipe. Were usinghis equipment and hes making the drive. But hes breaking me off 1/3rd of the haul! Staying honest has paid off indeed! Overtime everyone knows I'm one of the guys in the game to call when they need metal removed from they're home or buisness i was able to expand into property clean outs that provide inventory to sell
I agree its definitely beneficial to build relationships with people that alone has opened up many opportunities and has lead to other metal pick ups

I don't scrap for money, but... I pull a fair amount of copper and brass out of rivers while exploring, finding old dump sites, and filming. I collect it all, and have a new forge that I haven't fired up yet, because... stupid pandemic, got in the way. Love your videos.
Cool! How do you even find copper and brass when they aren’t magnetic? Are you gonna be doing videos of it?
@@thubprint All by eye, most of what I find is wire, but I also find copper pipe, old brass things... anything that sticks out as not a natural part of the rivers. I find at least a little bit of scrap in most of my videos (and sometimes a few bags full); though scrapping isn't the primary focus... they're more a relaxing, almost ASMR walk in or alongside rivers; picking up anything from fossils, to vintage bottles, to modern trash.
I actually got my start with a cold call to a place that had scrap sitting out and the owner just happened to have multiple large warehouses full of metal and was trying to downsize and needed help.

@@thubprint it waa a great 4 MONTHS! Soooo much metal shelving and display fixtures. FYI some yards will pay more for light iron that's clean and thin, i.e. shelves/filling cabinets/light fixtures without any plastic or wiring. One of my yards pays $0.06/lb for light iron and $0.09/lb for 'clean' light iron. More than heavy iron!

Discovered scrapping videos a couple years ago and have been yearning to make it my hobby ever since. Finally moving to a house where I can realistically start stacking some scrap, and even bought a truck (initially for renovation materials but secretly for hauling scrap). Definitely subscribing and going through your videos for more tips, but if any scrappers from the U.S. have tips for me, I'd appreciate it.
Nice! Yeah it really doesn’t work unless you’ve got a space for it. A fella could use a covered trailer and just store it in there until they bring it in to sell too, but some kind of shed or garage is ideal. Wish you all the best!
I have five different routes I do on my way home from work. I do one each work day. People have started to realize this and they set stuff out for pick up. This summer I built a complete fence around my yard, built a huge deck with all pressure treated wood for free. The key word FREE.

Not actually a scrapper, but I got started when I saw a UA-camr who makes tools and such from scrap motors. I also needed scrap metal to practice welding, so I do midnight runs on weekly large trash days and I’m amazed at what I find. I like taking things apart anyway to see how they are built. More of a hobby really, can’t imagine making a living from it, so I respect your work ethic and content.
Thanks Ziggy! There’s definitely all different levels for different people. I’d love to do some welding as a hobby but I have limited space for tools, not to mention the startup cost. I’m hoping if I make really great videos I won’t need the trash as much lol
I hope so too. You are my favorite scrapper channel. I'd suggest a cheap plasma cutter/welder combo to cut up conductive scrap metal or a flux-core welder if you have outdoor space. I do most of my cutting and welding on cast-off grills outside-- dryer cords make good extension cords lol. Ebay, Craigslist and pawn shops are good places to find cheap used welders.

I like that you said most are a flat fee and can't be over the top. Most scrappers say it is by the weight when it is not. Most have a weight limit in that price and anything over is more
Right! I think I read on one of their advertisements there is a point where you start paying tonnage, but most people would never hit that unless they were loading it with bricks or cars.
I work as a marine mechanic, make good money, but I still take stuff home- lots of brass,bronze and aluminum to be had in the dumpster at the boat yard! I get a couple hundred bucks of money I can put towards what ever at the year's end!
Oooo, a boatyard! I’ve never had the opportunity, but I’ll look forward to it if I ever get to! I’ve only been to the docks in Vancouver, but those are mostly fancy yacht clubs from what I remember.
@@thubprint I work for an engine/generator company thus drive my service truck in to the yard where boats (everything from 25 foot fishing boats to 200 foot yachts with a fair share of passenger ferries/tugs) are up on jack stands etc, they repair and service all kinds of systems at the yard, the employees park outside and get around on golf carts. They aren't allowed to take anything out the gate unless it fits in the lunch box. The metal and plumbing/electical depts have scrap bins in their shops, but for example last week there was all kinds of brass/bronze sea water piping in a pile by the trash, a corroded 1/2 hp electric motor, and a big bunch of 14/3 copper wire that had been ripped out. I often find marine batteries just left by the trash by boat crews. Often I leave it a day or so and if nobody else grabs it, it goes in my truck. I have a 6' x 12' area between a shed and privacy fence at home I pile things up in, and once or twice a year I do a haul. Now I don't scrap like you do, but it's foolish to throw away beer money as I get anywhere from $50 to a couple hundred a year for maybe an hours effort and a five mile drive to drop it off.
I started scrapping a year and a half ago. I'm a small scrapper, just a Jeep Liberty. My girlfriend got me into scrapping when I asked what type of UA-cam videos she watched. Scrapper videos was the answer. I love it.
It’s not full-time income, but it sure can be fun!
We do have fun together. Thub was one of the first you tube scrappers I turned him on to.

Great starting guide! It started for me with aluminum cans and my work was just a quarter mile from three scrap yards. Then I started collecting other bits but I only do non-ferrous, I give the steel away to other scrappers. My job has moved but now we're next to a HVAC shop and they leave out lots of goodies for the scrappers.
Ah, I guess you’re in one of the spots where bottles and cans don’t have deposits? Steel sure isn’t what it used to be lol.

Idk. I scrap almost every night and man has it become a great source of extra cash. Maybe I’m lucky and live in a bigger area with more of a selection. But between roll offs, apartments and neighborhood streets. I made $1,000 2 weeks ago with just a dodge ram pick up going out each evening for 2 hours and just filling my dodge ram. No trailer. $1,000 in one week of scrapping for roughly 14 hours of work… that’s solid in my eyes. Spring summer and fall only really. Once winter hits scrapping season is done.

Great video! I do all my scrapping on a bike so the two tools I always carry is a Klein Tools heavy-duty multi screwdriver and Klein Tools eight inch wire cutters. When I find things on trash day, I always take the best bits out, and leave the larger stuff for someone else.

It's actually quite fun. You can be much more detailed on a bike, and it's like unintentionally going to the gym. Plus, I'm not old enough to drive anyway.
I’ve been scrapping mostly copper, aluminium and brass for a bit now. I don’t sell the scrap I cast it into bronze and cast stuff for fun. Always looking for new sources of copper. Love this channel.

Local real estate companies are great too if they buy and sell properties themselves. They'll always be looking to update appliances and need a way to get rid of the old ones. I've gotten business just by driving around with scrap in my trailer too, people are out there looking for scrappers!
Decent! Appliances are something I have yet to dive into, it seems tough to make money just scrapping them. Between the low price of steel and the refrigerator fees I mean.
@@thubprint the gas appliances make it worth it. They all have brass fittings. Also motors from washers/dryers are super easy to get out and the control panel is usually aluminum. Water heaters are the best bet though, they're heavy for their size and all have at least two brass valves and nice heavy gauge wiring

I started scrapping about 2 years ago. I go round residential streets looking for places that are being renovated, there'll usually be a skip on the drive and often there will be scrap in the skip. I always ask because I'm pretty sure it's against the law here to take without permission (Ireland.) Most people tho are obliging. Like you said, it leaves more room in the skip. Very occasionally, someone will say no. It's those time when you realise that asking is always better.

I've always wanted to start scrapping, but sadly I live in a place where it's not very convenient. I live in a very rural forested part of Costa Rica, so for now it's just a dream sadly.
You could still find a way but yeah, that definitely sounds real tough. If you get a camera though you could always show people what life is like there!

Here in the UK it's ok to pick from skips (don't know what you call them over there) as long as you ask first. As long as the skip is with the customer, the contents remain their property, its all about transfer of ownership. If you take without permission, then you're stealing by finding. It's a grey area so it's always best to ask before you take

An iron rake makes it easier to pull things out of dumpsters
Not a bad idea! I tried a grabber once but it was mostly annoying because I was usually walking.
After you've been doing it about 2 or 3 months you will start finding a lot of good quality merchandise that still works and is not broken or damaged. You will start trying to resell that stuff....and it can become a whole lifestyle trying to sell the stuff you find for way more than its paltry scrap or recycling value.

Nice video Thub , it's much harder in the UK as we aren't allowed to leave stuff at the side of the road like you can in Canada and the USA , if we do we can be charged with flytipping 😂😂😂

In Sweden we have the recycle stations for paper, plastic, glass and metal containers. A lot of people leave other stuff there. Free to pic up. Like cofee machines, watar bolilers, toasters and so on. Lucky days you even find led batteries and bigger items like stoves and vacuum cleaners. Anyway I make alot of money from it. I got started scrapping by driving around on garbage nights. I also hit up construction site dumpsters at night or the weekends when the workers are gone. It actually is kind of profitable "sneaking around at night" as you put it. However, if there's a no trespassing sign I leave it alone. And if someone tells me not to scrap from a particular bin I won't.
As long as you’re staying out of trouble, whatever works for you is the way to go! I just like doing it in the daytime because I often have someone approach me and I get more than I would have otherwise.

Hey buddy! I live right by a scrap yard but I dont scrap. Once I brought over an alumimun can to them but everyone completely ignored me. So I took the can home and it ended up in a landfil. That makes me sad.

Wow! I never realized so many people with jobs actually scrap.
OK, I am here to tell you people about CRT TVs - the later-model ones (before they were essentially phased out) uses copper-coated aluminum wire for the deGaussing wire around the back of the screen. They are barely worth the time anymore if it weren't for the yoke, and might as well take the low-grade board out, but personally, I have stopped even looking at them. After the past 5 out of 6 tube TVs I have found had the crappy copper-coated wire for deGaussing, I started looking at them differently. Oh, and two of them had 1/2" bolts holding them together instead of screws so they had to come back to the house with me so's I could take them apart. Never again unless I know for sure it was an old, OLD tube TV. The one I had today was made in 1999 - coated aluminum wire. Ugh.
whooop whoop, you mentioned the UK, here in germany it is also hard. stuff on the curb is owned by the city, so by law you steal by picking it, if you wanna put stuff on the curb, you have to call the city, they give you an appointment when they pick it up. so that there is no fixed day ppl can get used to and make a trip around the neighbourhood. kind of su..ks. stay healthy everybody

I have 4 business owners that calls me on a regular basis to do pickups from them, they are all happy to get rid of it. Ralation with your scrapyard is important too, I got to do my own wheigh in last time I went and they got me coffee and cinnamon as they were on a break 🤣

I have really bad social anxiety (why I want to start to supplement my income). How did you manage to get these business owners to work with you? I've been wanting to contact auto shops, auto stores, etc to see if they would allow me to take scrap. Any suggestions?
I've made many valuable customers exactly how u just said just be friendly and slip into the conversion that you collect certain items and even offer to pay a small fee if they have really good items like I got 100kg (220lb) of single core house wire for $100 stripe that down to bright and shiny I've just turned it into $740 at current prices in Australia...

I did this in 2024 on marketplace.. and out of 10,000 search results for Free Scrap metal.. 9,995 its just people advertising that they pick up scrap metal
My new method is to go to the scrapyard look around for items and see what I can buy them for the other day I got an industrial forklift battery charger for only $50 after taking it apart I got about $150 in profit

I never really started scrapping. But with my line of work (satellite installation) I always end up with a pile of scrap dishes and coaxial wiring and etc. It just kind of happened.
Accidental scrapping, my favourite kind! Surprising to me there are still satellites being installed though, those aren’t consumer television dishes are they?
Nope right now my stack consists of obsolete models of satellite Internet dishes. Get a truck bed full it is usually bout 300 to 400lbs and usually get about $40 for it.

What makes aluminum windings undesirable when it comes to scrapping
They’re just far less valuable than copper so it’s not really worth breaking down items to find aluminium windings
Looking at the chronological video sequence i calculate that " bottle picking " is in decided recess. Which could be the Covid lockdown, or the relocation, or a renewed municipal stance. I'll go lockdown, but I don't know. I'm still in the container deposit rat race. Sort of wish an altered playing field would relieve me of it. The coin I make from the modest 24 bin run is useful but far from vital. What I might find useful is if a given hair stylist would relocate or fold so that I'm done collecting their aluminium foil. Love the ' game over ' thing. There were a couple of tradies in there on Sunday, but it's no change.
Well hello fellow trash friend! Idk if I’d blame the hairstylist, sounds like that’s a choice you make lol. I used to grab alu lasagna dishes and pie plates, but they just don’t end up being worth much. It’s true I took a bit of a break from actually picking, it just didn’t seem like a good idea with everything going on. Not that things have changed much but I’m gonna have to get back at it myself pretty quick, cuz the money has to come from somewhere!
@@thubprint When the container deposit came in it was a decidedly welcome playing field change. Sort of still is. I really got to sort some things out. The foil thing is not really financially worth it, but you get committed to it and its not that tough. Just gotta raid their wheely bin over the weekend in a deserted lane for a sort of hefty shopping bag of foil and then pour that into the wool bag at home. Bring along a dustpan, sweep and trash bag. 90% of the time if you get a grill the bottom will be rusted out and full of debris. As soon as you move it, it all falls out onto the sidewalk or street.

Collecting them no, but all the scrapyards in my area won’t buy from you unless they can mark down your vehicle license plate and drivers license number
Scrappers advertise here. The only problem is one guy never answere the phone and the other guy wouldn’t set a day or time to pick up my crap. I didn’t really have the time but ended up doing it myself and it totalled out at $180.
I work for a company that just so happens to always have metal in it's scraps bin, might just start looting from there tbh.
If it doesn’t bother the people paying you to be there and it’s on your own time, I sure would be!

Thankfully I can count on one hand the number of times my yard has been pilfered, but each time was buns. Always something valuable I wish I still owned 😠

The place I go to right by my house just goes off of the weight that I weigh in and then after the guy is done unloading my trailer I get back on scale and then that’s how they pay me. So typically I weigh in at 11,400 and when I’m done I’m usually 600 lbs less and get paid like $50-$100. Does that sound about right ?

I don’t do it for scrap yards no never not even steel I keep it to most of the time I am becoming a black smith (wanting) steel can be expensive over time aluminum I cast stuff and little figures copper idk yet
I met a fellow who collected all the adjustable universal steel bedframe a he could get for just that reason, it’s decent stock and expensive to purchase outright for projects
