  • Going on an adventure: Canyon launches the Grizl gravel bike
    Shed Tech episode #6
    Shed Tech goes beyond the Shed this time so Cyclist Tech Editor Sam Challis can introduce Canyon’s latest gravel bike, the Grizl.
    Canyon says that gravel is such an established riding discipline now that it warrants specialist subdivision in order to better cater for an individual’s specific riding needs. Want to go fast on hardpack gravel roads? Go for the Grail. But for those riders seeking to tackle longer expeditions over more adventurous terrain, Canyon says its new Grizl is the tool for the job.

    I agree that it's good to see they scrapped that stupid hover bar for this bike. I think it also does make sense to design a bike around a single wheel size, since swapping wheel sizes does affect the geometry and handling. If it's good for 700c it will be compromised for 650b and vice versa, even taking the likely different tyre sizes into account.

  • @nicolasledoux355
    @nicolasledoux355 3 роки тому +8

      @@olivierpetri8138 I'm also 190cm but with lots of research on the internet, you should check your inseam, (mine is 86cm) and the recommandation from the sizing algo from canyon website is L. Comparing the XL and L specs, the L version matches my single speed bike (XL state bicycle) which fits me perfectly. And usually, people say that it is better to get the smaller one if you're in between because it is easier to make it your fit (replacing the stem for example)

Admittedly the componentry between the 2 isn't identical but the Grizl represents a great alternative and I love the frame geometry and colours of the Grizl SL6. Unfortunately, there's a 3 mth wait! This bike was really easy to assemble ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

    Larger sized rotors on their own do not equal greater braking performance. You'd need better brakes to take advantage of that (i.e. larger brake pad surface area, better pad materials and better clamping).

    I got the Grizl CF SL around 3 months ago. I was planning to use it for commuting and doing some gravel adventure; however, after 3 weeks of use, I had a minor crash with another bicycle and the frame broke. I contacted Canyon and asked about the Crash Replacement Program. Basically, Canyon offered me a new frame (fork not included) for US$ 1,600 + Tax - not exactly a bargain. For now, I will store the bike while I decide what to do with it. If you are planning to do some adventure riding or to commute, consider getting an aluminum frame, as it will be more reliable. My suggestion, get a bike from a reputable brand from a local bike store.

    This is starting to look like variations in cars, here we have the ford focus XS-S which is totally different from the ford focus XS-Z. I get it, but to be fair it really does look like a grail with more mounting points. Something smelled fishy when canyon removed those mounting points on the grail for the 2020 model. And tadaaa here we have a "new"model :P . Only starting 600 euro's more for the base model ...... You see where im going with this? Don't get me wrong I own a grail AL 7 size m and love it to bits and yes 45 mm 700C wheels also fit in this bike. So I am hard pressed to see the extra value, it feels like they are just taking the piss now. Base model is grizl is 1999 euro carbon frame weighing 9.8 kg with grx 400 a grail 7 aluminum with grx 800 was 1850 euros weighing 9.3 kg. So what is the value proposition here? I guess the compliance in the frame of the carbon bike but why does it weigh more? So many questions, canyon can do better than this.

    • @cmbullit
      @cmbullit 3 роки тому

      Comparing the Grail CF SL 7 to the Grizl CF SL 7 the Grizl is a few hundred less with what looks to be a very similar component package. I'm guessing stock in the Grail will pile up and the Grizl will sell out all summer.

    • @HaswellCore

    • @ulyssepinon9177
      @ulyssepinon9177 2 роки тому

      It was well know at the time that an alloy version of the grizl would come out, no need to see the devil here xD. Also your numbers are from where ? on canyons website, the grizl cf sl 6 and the grail al 7 have the same weight, explained easily by the heavier tires and an heavier group set on the grizl.
      Between the grail al 7 and the grizl cf sl 7, so same group set, you have a 300 g difference between the two. Up to 514g if you consider the same tires. So its lighter, in carbon, with bigger tire clearance and fork mounts for 500€ more ... seems fair.
      If you compare the grail 7 with the grizl 7, so nearly same specs, you have a a 820g difference, minus 214g for the tires which means a "real" difference of 606 g.
      So same price, and you can choose for the lighter option with the grail (606g) or the more capable option with the grizl : Fork mounts, tire clearance, rack mount (only on the alloy version), front suspension option
      Also the welds on the grizl Al are much better looking, at least in Europe. Not the case in the usa for unknown reasons.
      The value is in the ability to choose what fits you the best.
