Falling Star - It's the sound that started Michael Jackson's mega-hit song Thriller and part of the signature “Thriller Night” intro soundscape. Anthony Marinelli describes how it was created, why he and Brian Banks were chosen to bring a cinematic approach to the album, the importance of visual music at the advent of MTV and the circumstances leading up to the making of the iconic song. This tag team synthesizer duo also composed, performed or programmed music on other hit records, many high profile films and award winning ads throughout the 80’s and early 90’s.

We learn about ancient human history through old relics and analysis…too see and hear the voice of someone apart of something so iconic sharing your knowledge and history…the part of you that will remain forever…❤💪🏽thank you
"the song just melted into the track" sublime use of words man 🎉🎉
You sir are an absolute genius. Falling star, 'Starlight' to 'Thriller' it's all starting to make sense!
Just incredible stuff. I remember watching the premier on the tele in 1983. I was only 10 tho. Thriller has a special place in my musical heart. Nothing will ever beat it (pun indented). :)
If nothing else, I learned I’ve been saying “Synclavier” wrong my whole life haha. These videos are premium assets the the music community. You’re a Legend, Sir! 😎
No, you haven’t been saying it wrong. He and most people say it wrong. It’s cla-vee-air.
Tomatoes, tomatoes.
Having grown up watching the Jackson 5 on TV, and watching MJ carry on from this has been quite a musical journey. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say this: Thank you for giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the sound creation on one of the most recognized albums on the planet. We (especially us synthesists) can’t be thankful enough for your invaluable teachings!
That falling star sound reminds me of a disco tom of course with a short relase decay, 🎉 that ARP sounds magical.
I still have my cassette of Thriller, and it plays like it was new. It’s the corner stone of my tape collection, and I love these videos that talk about the behind the scenes creation of this legendary album. This is yet another example of what make me continue to appreciate Thriller now over 40 years later!
Can't believe it's taken me this long to stumble across it but that's YT algorithms for you. Thanks for making these videos.
i was always in love with 80s analog synths, wonder and and after the musicians who were the guys to make this sharp, never dying 80s sounds, now we now who were they and how they've made it, there is alot to learn
You have a fantastic rapport and wonderful charisma in the way you host your presentations, Anthony. They are completely free of any ego. Also, you don't bombard the viewer with offending intro, outro, and background music. 😁
I agree - These videos are a lovely relaxing joy to watch
He is like the Brian Cox of music eh?
Just amazing to watch this musical creativity magic history.
Been watching a lot of your videos lately, I watch almost everything new you've put out. What a difference in a few years Anthony. Awesome. You sound so much more natural and comfortable in your videos these days. Not that this is awkward, but you've gotten really good at doing this.
Thank you for sharing with us everything you do.
We also need more videos!!!
Do you know what...this is priceless...
This is an incredible insight - please please please make many more videos going into as much detail as possible... Your work and insights are historically important! Thank you
The passion and love of what you do comes through with each story. I truly believe that your fan base is people who are similar at their jobs.
Please give us more of this pieces of history… 🙏🙏🙏
Can’t believe you’ve not got more subscribers. Your videos are fascinating and the way you create sounds has been inspirational. Thanks for making these videos.
Hi Anthony,
I used to see you at the annual NED seminars - so nice to see your smiling face again! We seemed to only talk about Synclavier stuff (no surprises there) so I'm finally catching up on everything else.
Thanks for the posts!
Please make more of these , this is knowledge for a new generation of music
Brilliant anecdotes, Anthony! Every keyboard player in the world idolizes you! 👍
Hi Anthony, I for one would LOVE to see and hear more about your early projects in that synthesizer duo with Brian Banks! Thanks for creating your channel Anthony! You created a unique style of video and I’m all here for you. It’s calm and informative. Blessings.
Can you say something about how it was mixed. And how the sheer complexity of the project was kept organised and on track, without the aid of computers.
Great story Anthony!
Make more, yes! Absolutely!
I don't understand how there are so few commented or questions here. Thanks for the book recommendations too
We certainly DO like hearing about it and WANT to hear more 😁😁
Just found your channel but definitely Subscribed!
Thank you for sharing memories ,god bless
Just genius wow 😯
Wow, this is rad
youre an amazing storyteller, but the subject matter makes it surreal, its music history. i don't think there is a better pop song.
I would love to see some experimental design content from you.
Make more please!!!!!!
I always wondered what Vocoder was used on PYT.
🔥🔥🔥
Hey Anthony!
I am a sight challenged woman who is a sound designer, and I looooooooooooooove to make and collect virtual instruments and sound recordings of all kinds! I absolutely looooooooooooooove the way you present your videos! You seem like quite a sweet guy, and I'd sure like to meet you one day! I hear talk you produced and recorded with Kenny Loggins, an artist whose music I absolutely love! There's a couple of drum machines that I've always wanted to sample, but I'm not sure what kind they are. I have a couple example songs that feature these drum machines, and I wonder if you might be able to identify them. Those two songs are: "Meet Me Half Way" from "Over The Top", and "Playin' With The Boys" from "Top Gun". I wonder if you might make videos of the production and recording techniques of those songs, as I'd love to find out how they were made! By the way, my name is Annabelle.
Hi Anthony, can you share with us how to create the synth base of the way you make me feel? Thanks
Can you post a video dedicated of your work with the Synclavier ? on Thriller or other projects ? Thx a lot !

Dear Anthony,, did the E-mu - Emulator I - do the organ sound on the track Thriller?
You have the diskettes for the synclavier?

I thought I was the only one to try to scare kids with my synth. on Holloween. I didn't have any candy to hand out and No kids came to my door
Great to see you have a sherman!
Wait…did he just say he had that ARP 2600 as a senior in highschool?
Love to have that technology in my basement

Thanks a lot for your time.
Gracias , amigo.
Wonder what this guys electric bill is every month? lol
There are hidden kittens inside the instruments, manufactured electric kittens 😸 they get cat food off camera. 🤣 oh wait..
Just kiddin, some analog synths even need to warm up before use causing that much heat and using much electricity 😮
Less talk, more music please.
