I’ve been watching y’all’s channel for soooo long now! I remember when I was younger your tips really helped me become better at filming! Your UA-cam style is still the same and I like it
Thank you Film Riot, watching your channel for five years and i'm still learning stuff along the way.
Wish to learn more about storyboarding and how you plan each cuts, because I encounter story logical problems during post production.
This is one of the most educationnal episode you have ever made ! You just keep improving, incredible !
yo, love from the east! I love the new style of your episode, showing both movie grab and whatever else you shoot. It gives both with and without context plus how its technically made. Love it, keep it up!
Great episode Ryan. I knew all of these. It's still really useful to think about which one will effect your story in the long run.
The zoom is why I love many films from the 1970's. To me, that's the defining camera move of the decade along with early steadicam usage.
if you like zoom tarintino executes them perfectly django unchained is a good example check em out
@@diarmok1549 i used to think so until I watched 70s movies. I ran in some Luis Bunuel movies. Now I think quentins zooms may be average
The zoom's at Django and Kill bill vol.2 is not that good. Like at The Grand Budapest Hotel have cool zoom's.
Edit: I fuc king hate slow zoom's.
@@Davi.Abraham.Millman what you've said has been sent SMPTE for more observations...
Edit: we will be back you within few decades☺️
That feeling when you skip filmriot ad part perfectly
This is a great episode guys, the kind of stuff we amateur filmmakers want and need to explore, thanks. I think the push/dolly in
and the extreme zoom out are my two favorite camera movements... Thanks again, Moses...
A very helpful video! I’m working on the shot list and storyboard for my next short and this really helped me to visualise my story and the shots I want to use.
Awesome episode guys!!! Pleaseee make more of this kind!!
More on the way.
👍
Masterfully done. Spielberg once described himself as a young artist "a kid who loved dolly shots" something undeniably magical about the movement when attached to storytelling
The dolly shot at 2:21 was so gorgeous that took me a while to realise that wasn't part of a movie but a test made in your office!
Thanks so much for making this video. After being on several sets recently and having to explain to directors and other DPs the differences and reasons each is used I can now just refer them to this.
+Murani Lewis if a DP needs that explained to them, there's a serious problem. Haha
Yes I tend to stand around on set watching 2-3 minute decisions turn into 15 minute discussions before having to step in and clarify and provide direction. Goes along with working with a lot of young/new DPs.
Thank you so much Film Riot. This informative videos are helping me to learn Film Making. Keep making these kind of videos. 👍👍
One of my favorite video's to date. Perfectly explained. Bravo!
+GrizzlyTV thanks man.
I really enjoyed this episode. Thanks dudes.
sir film making is my passion and i learned a lot from you.
You are brilliant......You helped me define the difference for my book --drawing for animation and live action.
what a great lesson video. Loads of content and can be watched multiple times
Thanks Andrew. Very glad you found it helpful. :)
Awesome tips Ryan. Love your work.
I love these kind of videos. Really helped me. Thanks! :D
Congrats on a million man
Great video. I really like the way you explain things.
awesome ep like always
Loving you guys
wait... you have a million subs now! Well done!
Great video,Thank you!!!
As always!
Love the presentation, thanks
perfect! awesome episode
love you guys I watch you videos all the time. I would love to come visit your studio.
Silver Lining Playbook is a solid example if you're looking for that zoom and dolly shots used so nicely. Plus you'll get to see a great movie as well. Cheers !!
Succinct and priceless...thanks Ryan!
Ah great, dolly in and zoom out at the same time. I saw this type of amazing shot in a Musicvideo but couldn't figure out how it was done. Thanks
I have always wondered what caused that effect. Glad to finally have it explained.
TheEagle not to brag but I figured it out on my own...

HOORAY! I LOVE THIS VIDEO!
Great video!!
You guys have the crispiest of green screen keys I've ever seen.
Excellent video thought!
Jared StCyr u
BRIIAN.S.F u guys?
you can totally see how there's absolutely 0 green in the entire shot though. not that it matters
POLYMETRIC m
Very well-presented.
You touched briefly on it but one of some of the most inventive uses of dollies/zooms come from Scorsese and PTA (Goodfellas and Magnolia) where they push in whilst simultaneously zooming which basically acts as a more extreme, accelerated dolly in.
Wow nice shot
best channell ever
more please🤞🏻
Thanks 🙏 great info
Very useful. Thanks. I'm learning a lot. Kevin
Great tips!!! Thanks!!
More like this amazing knowledge
Great explanation, I'm always getting those mixed up. That dolly-zoom effect can be really disorienting. The one in Poltergeist is the one I always think of-but, along with the push-pull, didn't FX create a telescoping hallway to get that shot?
How do
You guys do your green screen keying? It's looks SO GOOD
I was wondering could you guys do a DIT video like the one you did fo the 2nd AC and just make more of that kind, where you can explain the most important roles on set as I believe a cast who know their jobs will lead to a successful film. Thanks a lot
Misbah
I've always wondered, who actually says "logo" during the transition. It's been there for so long yet I've never known who says it.
you forgot to mention limitless, has amazing camera movement :P
Only watched a few of your videos but witnessed now the second use of gravity as a film making tool and I like it cos gravity is free and reliable, unlike good equipment.
keep it for ever
Good job
Nice video. Can you expand a little on how you would create a zoom in post production?
I've been wondering about this
I used to think a zoom was part of the dolly technique. Where the camera gets closer to the subject, but I was wrong.
Thanks for the tip!
My family friend is the main Camera Operator of Conjuring 2. His name is Matt Moriarty
nice new music
When are we gonna be getting into those monday challanges?
Why didn't Josh interrupt??
Yo dude what’s up love your videos
¡This is great!
I need a slider now! Best movement for the price if hand made.
I loved Munich, but after seeing it once I wasn't sure I could watch it again. It's so real and sad.
legend has it that if I comment early, Ryan will answer
It's not true.
lol
Film Riot :)
Umm. Just wondering what do you a think a good price for a dolly would be. I am looking one for $20 and one that's $100.... I'm so confused and thumped on what I'm gonna get if I get the $20 or the $100
Dude I love Fight Club
Another good use that I can remember from Dolly Shots are the ones that are so slight that it's only when you're a Nerd about the movie and making movies that you catch them on the second or third watch.
Like for me, the one that I'm thinking of is in the first How To Train Your Dragon movie during the Test Flight scene (the Best Fuckin Scene In Animation Don't @ me), where Toothless and Hiccup dip down towards the sea stacks near the beginning of the scene, they do a Dolly Zoom to make the world seem to move around them, making the movement more dynamic.
Snap zoom is my favorite
Can you make a video showing how the scene from jaws was done? The reason I am asking is that my friend's dad was on of the cameramen on set and obviously never got a chance to ask him before he passed away in the 90s.
that's great
This may sound like a stupid question, but how do you get that subtle slow zoom in post that Ryan is talking about towards the end? Can't figure out how to add zoom in Sony.
Ryan, Everyone always says choose camera moves and lenses that help tell your story, could you possibly break down some camera moves, and focal lengths and how they affect the story/scene/audiences view, like you did here with the dolly and zoom shots? Thanks Bro.
+Vincent Parker Definitely! Great idea man. Thanks for the feedback.
This is literally the job of the director. Watch movies and track how you feel, isolate what about the camera is making you feel that. Go direct movies and test intuitions about how cameras could make an audience feel. Repeat constantly. Forever.
Barry Lyndon - King of the zooms.
you speak to quickly think about french or people who speak softly but i like that
if you can do a video on sports videography and editing..that would be awesome..🤗🤗
Amazin!!
The eerie shots in It follows.Id that all zoom or dolly?
*Digital Zooms in Post*
If you shoot 4k and deliver in 1080p it works MUCH better since you have all that extra resolution! I shoot with a 5d2 and a t3i so only 1080p so the zoom and pans or slides have to be very minor. :(
This is one of the reasons I wish I had a 4K capable camera.
*Focus Handles*
In Canada the kit of 3 Fotodiox is 50$ CANADIAN!
Neweer sells some at 7$Can each.
I miss old Film Riot with hilarious skits and Emily's evil.
Jazzy Lev yeah I was just thinking this
where is the Josh abuse?
I miss the skits but not evil emily
Im considering going to full sail or just watch all your episodes
2:29 i'll use that tomorrow
Thaaanks
please, make a video talking about how to capture the inside of a car.. I have many difficults to capture that
what you said makes sense but visually i can’t tell the difference between a dolly/push in and a zoom in. if i didn’t know before hand which one was being used, i would not be able to tell. any tips to help spot the difference?
If you liked "Munich" you should watch the original film HBO's production "Sword of Gideon" which was told to the writer by an actual participant of the Mosaad group which went after the leaders of Black Setember. It was an early HBO production so the budget was tight but was well done.
best shirt
New episodes every tuesday and friday. ;)

+1 for the Honda Element

Loved this! Thanks for producing awesome content. I have a review of some awesome cheap LED panels coming out today @ 4:30. Would love it if you took a look!
what is the brandname of the lavalier microphones u used for this episode? do u want to do a espisode about different lavailer's performances?
Who else likes the video and then watches it?
Echo Productions me
Echo Productions hey, are you doing a part 2 of Surrounded? if so, how's it coming along?
Echo Productions I auto like all the time. I have been watching this channel for at least 5 years
steve morgan Yeah lol me too
Jazzy Lev I am working on it, hopefully it will be done by the end of spring break :) it's looking like it's going to be a lot better than Surrounded:)
Oh is it the first time you use cinematic background music?
I kept hearing a dog barking in the background, until I realized it was the soundtrack for the video
