Studying through Romans for my men’s group I was leading recently, when I got to realizing what is in Romans 9 this doctrine of election came alive to me and like John has said before when you come to a knowledge of this, the lights go on and you realize this is revealed all throughout scripture.

No it is not! Why does any one listen to Calvin, he was a despicable person murdered at least 41 people. NO WHERE IN THE BIBLE do you find the statement We are predestined to Salvation - not there. Romans 1 also says "They KNEW God but did not honor him as God, so God gave them over to their ungodly desires." Then Paul says when they die and go to Hell "They have no excuse!" If God chooses who will be saved - They would have an excuse. So we have disproved Irresistable grace and God decides who goes to heaven all in one. And through in the fact there is also free will, "Although they knew the truth they decided - THEY DECIDED - not to follow. But wordhipped the creation and not the Creator!! Original Sin - Total agreement - but only because Romans 5-6-7 teach it!!! In fact Calvin's point of view can be disproven not just in Romans 1 - but also in John 3:16 and verse 18 as well. Why, If someone does not beleive Jesus says they are condemned already - so even Jesus teaches that free will is present in OUR CHOICES!!! God's Choice is everyone will get saved!!

@@markwills3602 Obviously you have your mind made up. Just be convinced in your own mind. I get it, I used to make the same arguments you are making now. Which is why I am not going to push any points, but I am going to tell you why I believe what I believe. What appeals to me about reformed theology is that we don't attempt to solve apparent issue of God's sovereignty and human responsibility with a concept of human autonomy that I do not find in the bible. We live in the tension because that is what the bible seems to do. However, I would hope we could both agree that neither of us is totally right. Each of us have flaws in our theology. Sure, I think I am right and you think you are. Where we agree are the essentials. We agree that God alone saves. That Christ is the only way. That God is Triune. That Christ's sacrifice is the only payment for sins. And I could go on. My father who I respect as a bible teacher more than any, is an Arminian, and we can enjoy fellowship together. I apologize if I sounded harsh in my comment earlier. I try to approach this topic with love because it gets so heated. I agree with Spurgeon that the old Arminian standard is the same as we believe, apart from the operation of the Holy Spirit, no man is saved.

@@markwills3602 Human autonomy is not biblical and that is the very thing you are trying to preserve. The Bible clearly says in Romans 8 that those foreknown are predestined to be conformed, and those predestined are called, those called are justified, and those justified are glorified. If you twist that and ignore the link between those foreknown, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification to say "well it doesn't say predestined to salvation, it only says to be conformed", then I don't know what I can do for you. It is the natural reading of the bible. To your point about Romans 1. Yes, every single person knows of God, and has enough knowledge to be condemned. If you say that passage means everyone is able to please God by faith and repentance apart from God granting it by bestowing grace upon them, then I lose you there as well. Please understand, your objections are not new. They have been stated time and time again. They have been answered, but people don't like the answers, therefore, there are different theologies. And that is ok as long as you attempt to be faithful to the Bible and I think that you are. Let's agree to disagree, and let us both be sharpened by one another and encouraged by one another to study further.

Tim Gilbert the reality is that we are as helpless as the criminal on the cross to do anything to earn our salvation. As someone who was raised Roman Catholic, the thought that I can contribute nothing to my salvation was offensive to me. It WAS offensive to me, but in hindsight, it’s a load off to know that I’m justified by faith. Has it changed the way I live? I’m a work in progress, but by the grace of God, and the leading from the Holy Spirit, I’m not the way I used to be. I would love to get a hold of the younger me and tell him a few things, because I was ignorant and self-centered.

@@patriot4780 the reason for feeling helpless, is when we first heard the gospel, the Holy Spirit convicted us of our guilt. The answer to the forgiveness is believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Romans 3:24-26; John 3:16-18, Romans 10:9-17). The tension that comes from Calvinism is dispersed from the confused theology from the likes of John Macarthur, Steven Lawson, and Voddie Baucham's teachings. 1Corinthians 14:33 "For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints." Here in this passage, Paul explains the arguments of who should be teaching, like women. Today we argue over what is true: Calvinism. Reformed theology. Think about that... "Reformed." Did the words of the Bible need reforming? No. We do. Thus came Jesus Christ. It's a 33 year old story written in the four synoptic Gospels. Calvin's dogma came from way beyond the writers of the Bible. His institutes for Christian Living bear no accurate citations from the Bible. Historical accounts say he was a dispotical lawyer who demanded obedience to his "decrees, or face jail time or worse, like being burned at the stake.

Having been raised in Arminianist churches and attending until 50 years old or so, my personal study of God's word kept revealing something wrong with the things I was being taught. When finally I heard of reformed theology and began tuning into Ligoniers and other like ministries, I discovered that the Lord was showing me I was, what my previous church leaders called Calvanistic. But finding Calvanism and St. Augustine's works to be truth, I embraced it whole heartedly. I'm now 66 and have taught adult bible classes often, although most of those in attendance were yet babes in Christ. I am deeply grateful for John MacArthur's clear and concise preaching and teaching. I've learned so very much over the past 10 years....and I cringe when thinking about things I taught before God's word and His Spirit revealed much more glorious truth to me. Thank you Dr. MacArthur, I pray the Lord will allow you to continue for many years to come.

When I was truly converted, divine election made complete sense to me, although at first I was hesitant. I grew up in a very legalistic environment, a charasmatic Pentecostal denomination. Where you are constantly on guard, able to lose your salvation with any sin, and could die and go to hell if not fully repentant and completely clear of all sin before death. It was a nightmare. After truly becoming a Christian, almost 20 years later, I listened to and read MacArthur and sproul. I realized I had it all wrong and it was like a light bulb going off in my head, everything made sense and the Word of God became plain and clear. I also came to the realization that I was helplessly lost and unable to free myself absent God,s intervention.

John MacArthur impresses me very much because he speaks clearly, he motions modestly and speaks directly to the point of his message and doesn't declare that he is always right but maintains as to what the bible tells him in his own understanding. He stands firm with his knowledge of what he understands and knows he does not have all the answers about God. He does not run around on his podium like a wild idiot, nor shouts into the microphone with a loud voice as though no one can hear him and acts likes someone extremely high on caffeine and that impresses me the most

Yes He does. He preaches salvation by grace and adds works. Romans 11:6. If we add one work to grace we have perverted the gospel of grace an preach works.
Lordship salvation is works salvation which perverts the gospel of grace. He makes the cross of no effect. He denies the blood of Jesus which covers us from all sin, past, present, and future sins we have not even thought of yet. John 3:18. Believers can no longer be condemned, but unbelievers are condemned already because they have not believed on the name of the Son of God. Colossians 2:13. He has forgiven us ALL trespasses. Not some, but ALL. The GIFT of God is eternal life. All we have to do is accept His full payment for our sin. Paid in full. John 3:18.

Arminianism and Calvinism have been the classic debate between Christians, but to call out on them and say they are heretics is a mistake because they can be saying the same exact thing about Calvinists. The primary doctrines of salvation is what all Christians must say yes and Amen to. Other than that secondary doctrine will be debated until Jesus reaffirms in us all things as we dwell with him for eternity. God bless.

    • @carlosreira413

Yes, but Luther still held the power of grace vested in the Church and the sacraments, particularly baptism. He believed that the Christian culture of his day was of God and anything like a secularist world in which Christians were again the underdogs as they were in the first century was unthinkable. It's important to keep this in mind. Man had no part to play in his salvation because the play had essentially been made. It could not be UNMADE. This is different from Calvinism, especially the English speaking Puritan form which becomes so important to American Evangelical thinking.

What was the decisive cause of your faith in Christ?
The Calvinist says "The cause of my faith was Christ."
The Arminian says "The cause of my faith in Christ was myself." There's way more to it than that (Depravity,Election, Atonement,New birth, perseverance, naming faith, etc), but the original question definitely identifies which "camp" one subscribes to. Both are biblically based. Both rely on scripture to form a differing perspective (and somewhat opposing view) with either viewpoint, the other can always point to scripture and say "yea, but what about THIS?" Both believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. I don't believe either have lost salvation because of it. I prefer to understand what I can of each and move on without firmly planting my feet in either camp. Are those that attack him so righteous as to also say "ALL protestants or ALL Catholics" are lost? I cannot.

How about that word "MIGHT" we find in the NT? Regarding the matter of redemption, it says that many sinners will refuse to believe "that they MIGHT [potentially] be saved"? Might be saved? Potentially saved? Hmmm, that doesn't fit the typical Calvinist mold, since, according to Calvinism, nobody who has the potential to be saved will ever be lost, for all are elected unto salvation. There is not "might be saved" when it comes to the non-elect. How about "deeming yourselves unworthy of eternal life?" That's another statement in the Bible. Can that possibly be true of the dead sinner who has absolutely to capacity whatsoever to respond to God? There are plenty of Bible verses which fall into the Arminian camp, demanding that we present the revelation of Scripture in a balanced manner. One theological angle is not enough. Plucking one string on the Bible Banjo, so to speak, is not the playing good spiritual music.

To be fair, I was not taught in Arminianism tradition that man makes the first move toward God as Mr. MacArthur states starting at time stamp 21:53 of this message. As the apostle John says in Rev 3:20, Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” Jesus has to draw through his Spirit, and then the heart may respond to Him. “…If anyone hears my voice and opens the door…”. That is not man making the first move toward God, as John MacArthur has stated in this message regarding Arminian theology.

Um, Calvinism is NOT the gospel. Sure, it contains gospel truth, but it is NOT the gospel, any more than dispensationalism is the gospel. I know a girl who got saved in a Calvinistic based church, then later in her walk with the Lord she came to disagree with certain elements taught by the church, and subsequently left and joined another solid Christian church with views more in harmony with her personal convictions. That church gasped at her decision, very similar to a cult group who thinks it has a monopoly on truth. Sadly, some Calvinistic churches have taken on the spirit of a cult group, seeking to promote its way of thinking at the expense of the pure, simple message of the Cross. I've preached for 30 years in the same place. We rarely talk about John Calvin, the subject and debate surrounding Calvinism, and most people don't know much about nor care about the TULIP acrostic. And it's amazing how lovely and godly these folks are! In fact, it some respects I'm glad they live in ignorance to some of this "stuff" people spend their whole lives debating. The Calvinists opinion, is that no one has a choice aka free-will. Therefore Calvinists do NOT believe what is written in Mark 16:15-16; John 3:18; Joshua 24:15; Deuteronomy 30:19; Hebrews 11:24-26.
The Arminians opinion, is that Christians who believe the gospel and are saved, can lose His salvation. Therefore Arminians do NOT believe what is written in John 6:35-40, John 10:22-30, John 17:6-12; Jude 1:24-25; Psalm 121.
The truth is, that we all have a choice aka free-will (John 3:18), and the Lord Jesus Christ will lose nothing (John 6:39). ...

Calvinist believe all the scriptures that speak of people making choices. We believe people make choices all the time. However, based on scriptures like Romans 8:7-8, Romans 3:10-11 (Psalm 14:1-3), 1 Cor 1:18, 1 Cor 2:14, John 6:44a, Eph 2:1-6 (Paul writes of nonbelievers as being spiritually dead in their sins) we believe that the unregenerate, natural person cannot and will not choose for God.That's their choice. On the other hand, with scriptures like John 3:1-8, John 6:44b, Eph 2:4-6, 1 John 5:1; 2 Tim 2:24-26 (especially v. 25), Act 11:18, Ezek 37:1-11, Ezek 36:26, Jer 24:7 we believe that it takes a work from God in order someone dead in their sins to be raised to spiritual life, granted repentance, in order that they then want to make the choice for God/Jesus Christ. All those scriptures that make statements like if someone chooses to believe they will have eternal life are nothing more than statements of fact.If someone believes they will be saved. There is nothing in those scriptures about who can or will make that choice. The idea that it means everyone can make a choice for God/Christ is imposed onto those scriptures. There are other passages as I have listed that address the issue of who will and who won't do that. Also, God determines not only the ends but the means to those ends.Romans 10:17 says faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.Having prophets go to Israel and implore them to repent and believe, and people now preaching the gospel of Christ, is the means by which God then draws those who will come to understand and believe. It was the same in the OT as it is since Christ.Remember - not all of Israel believed.Only the remnant that were called out by God by his grace (Rom 11:4-6).Those are the people who like the dry bones he raised to life (spiritually) and gave a new heart (turning hearts of stone into hearts of flesh).

Reall getting exhausted of Calvinists conflation of the two aspects of Salvation. Man's response-ability to the Spirit breathed word of the Gospel, and God's sovereign choice to regenerate those who "respond" to the message in faith. It is God's sovereign and gracious choice to pardon those who come to Him in faith as apposed to working to earn His favor. Faith is NOT a meritorious work. God is not obligated to forgive our sins when we admit we are sinners. He is gracious to forgive by His choice. It is no secret who God desires to save as Calvinists would lead us to believe. It is those who trust in His chosen SON.

John G. Paton was a missionary who evangelised a violent island where everyone, both men and woman, wear little to no clothing. In his book, The Story of John G. Paton or Thirty Years Among South Sea Cannibals, John G. Paton records this incident about a native man and woman who became Christians and then wanted to marry but feared they would be killed because there were a few men who wanted to marry the woman.
In a few seconds, Yakin entered and if Nelwang’s bearing and appearance were rather inconsistent with the feeling of worship (he was wearing a shirt, kilt and tommahawk, John G. Paton felt it inappropriate to wear an emblem of violence to church)- and what on earth was I to do when the figure and costume of Yakin began to reveal itself marching in?
The first visible difference betwixt a Heathen and a Christian is that the Christian wears some clothing, the Heathen wears none. Yakin had determined to show the extent of her Christianity by the amount of clothing she could carry upon her person. Being a Chief’s widow before she became Nelwang’s bride, she had some idea of state occasions and appeared dressed in every article of European apparel, mostly portions of male attire, that she could beg or borrow from about the premises!
Her bridal gown was a man’s drab-coloured great-coat, put on above her native grass skirts and sweeping down to her heels, buttoned tight. Over this she had hung on a vest and above that, again, most amazing of all, she had superinduced a pair of men's trousers, planting the body of them on her neck and shoulders and leaving her head and face looking out from between the legs - a leg from either side streaming over her bosom, arid, dangling down absurdly in front! Fastened to the one shoulder also there was a red shirt and to the other a striped shirt waving about her like wings as she sailed along. Around her head, a red shirt had been twisted like a turban, and her notions of art demanded that a sleeve thereof should have a loft over each of her ears! She seemed to be a moving monster-loaded with a mass of rags.
The day was excessively hot, and the perspiration poured over her face in streams. She, too, sat as near to me as she could get on the woman’s side of the church. Nelwang looked at me and then at her smiling quietly, as if to say, “You never saw in all your white world, a bride so grandly dressed!”
I little thought what I was bringing on myself when I urged them to come to church. The sight of that poor creature sweltering before me constrained me for once to make the service very short - perhaps the shortest I ever conducted in all my life! The day ended in peace. The two souls were extremely happy, and I praised God that what might have been a scene of bloodshed had closed thus, even though it were in a kind of wild grotesquerie!

@@iacoponefurio1915 - You’re right, I should at least think about it and formulate some cohesive opinion….so here is my stab at it:
Rom 8:29 - For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
1 Pet 1:2 - Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father.
The nature of God’s election of man is a hotly debated topic in Christendom. The fact of election itself is not in question, scripture clearly teaches that the promises of God are reserved for his elect. The debate is centered around the nature of that election.
Some teach that election, as far as man is concerned, is purely arbitrary. Whether or not you have the privilege of being redeemed is, at least as far as you yourself are concerned, essentially “the luck of the draw”. In this view, God either created you for redemption or destruction and there is nothing you can, nor ever could do, nor could have ever done to change the outcome. In this view, it is also held that we cannot know anything about the nature of God’s choosing, it is locked within his hidden counsel.
Yet, scripture actually does give us an indication of the nature of that choice. Election and predestination are based on foreknowledge. Rom 8:29 - whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate”. 1 Pet 1:2 - Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father. So, the debate is not really with the nature of election, according to scripture, we know what God’s election is based on, its based on foreknowledge. So the debate really comes down to the nature of God’s foreknowledge. What is God’s foreknowledge based on?
Some teach that foreknowledge is predetermination, meaning God predetermined ahead of time whom he would choose, and that we can never know anything about the nature of that determination. They will vehemently insist, however, that it has nothing to do with anything God would “foresee” about the person themselves and what their faith response to the Gospel would be. Yet, the definition of the word “foreknow” is exactly that: to know beforehand, that is, foresee.
The argument made against election being based on something God would “foresee” about how a person would respond to Christ's atonement is that then salvation would be based on mans works rather than God's gift obtained through faith. Salvation is always based on faith, no man can ever “work” his way to salvation. Only when a person responds in faith to the Gospel can he be saved, so that’s the qualifier. The fact that God “foresees” that ahead of time does not change the nature of salvation, it is still based on faith apart from works. Scripture teaches that Jesus knew from the beginning of time who would believe and who wouldn’t.
John 6:64 - But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.
Some may then argue “well then you are saying that man plays a part in his salvation” and to that I would answer “Yes, he does”. Scripture does not teach, anywhere, that man plays no part in salvation, it simply teaches that a mans “works” play no part, however their faith does. Salvation is freely given, but it is obtained as a result of faith, our faith. God makes the way of faith possible, but then requires each person to exercise that faith. Once a person, of their own volition and from the heart, put their faith and trust in Christ, they are saved. That’s our part in the equation. Here it is clearly stated in Romans:
Rom 10:10-13 - For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, WHOSOEVER believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto ALL that call upon him. For WHOSOEVER shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
The universal availability of salvation could not be more clearly stated than in that particular passage. In Acts 17:30 - And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth ALL men EVERYWHERE to repent.
In 2 Pet 3:9 it states: The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that ANY should perish, but that ALL should come to repentance.
These passages mean exactly what they say, and remain consistent with the love and mercy of God freely available to all. When a person repents and turns to the Lord, they become the elect, known by God from the foundation of the world. The Apostle Peter confirms this by exhorting believers to “make their election and calling sure”. How is it possible to “make our election sure” if we have no part in the process? The fact is we do have a part, our part is to exercise our faith and put our trust in him for salvation.
2 Pet 1:10 - Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall.
Peter also exhorts, and warns us that once we come to salvation, to “give diligence” to our calling in order to prevent a falling away. If a person later turns from their faith and ceases to follow the Lord, they forfeit their status as the elect and are rejected....known by God from the foundation of the world.
John 15:6 - If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Rom 11:20-22 - Be not highminded, but fear: For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
If it was possible for Israel to be cut off, so it is possible for any Christian who does not maintain their faith and trust in the Lord, to the end.
The Apostle Paul recognized this possible end, even for himself and as a warning to us. In 1 Cor 9:27 he states: But I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified (cast away, rejected, reprobate).
Now, for the $64K question, what about Jacob and Esau? What about Rom 9:11 - For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth.
I think this is speaking of specific, limited instances in history of God overruling the will of a person so he can bring about his greater purpose in the plan redemption i.e. Jacob and Esau, Pharoah, and the partial hardening of Israel for a time until the fullness of the Gentiles came in (Rom 11:25). He is certainly free to do this with his creation as He pleases and we should not question him in it, but it is NOT an indicator of how he deals with mankind in general.
It’s important to note that the bulk of Romans 8 through 11 are describing the “larger view” plan of redemption from Israel to the Gentiles. God knew Israel would largely reject him and go their own way. It was not his will or desire that they would rebel in the wilderness and reject his ways, he just knew they would. Therefore he formed a new covenant, based on better promises, and made it freely available to all, without any distinction. But even with this, God also knows ahead of time that most of stubborn mankind will reject this glorious new covenant and go their own way. Again it’s not Gods will or desire that they do, he just knows they will as it states in 2 Pet 3:9 - not willing that any should perish, but that ALL should come to repentance. He also knows a remnant out of mankind will respond to this glorious new covenant, turn to him in faith, become his followers and remain faithful to the end. These are to be his sons and daughters, these are the people of God, the elect, the children of the promise…..known by God from the foundation of the world, NOT predetermined, but pre-known. The “plan” of salvation was predetermined, not the availability. Salvation is freely available to ALL without any partiality or distinction as confirmed by the verses stated earlier.
Now, one might be tempted to ask, “well then why did God go through with it all? Why not just create the elect only and forgo bringing to birth those who he knew would ultimately reject him?”. Why put up with “vessels of wrath, fitted for destruction” as it states in Rom 9:22? The answer comes in the next verse: Rom 9:23 - That he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory. Not predetermined, but pre-known. Those who he foreknew would, by faith and patience, remain steadfast to the end and inherit the promises. The whole of creation is moving towards the grand event of the revealing of the children of God, freed from corruption by Gods grace combined with their faith, proven and refined through the trial.
Rom 8;19-22 - For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

John 3:16-21 King James Version (KJV)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH ( IS GOD'S CHOSEN ELECT) in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him MIGHT BE SAVED.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is CONDEMNED ALREADY, (BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD 🌎) BECAUSE HE HATH NOT BELIEVED IN THE NAME OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD.
    Eph. 1:4-5 & 2 Pet. 2:9-10
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, AND MEN LOVED DARKNESS RATHER THAN LIGHT, BECAUSE THEIR DEEDS WERE EVIL.
20 FOR EVERY ONE THAT DOETH EVIL HATETH THE LIGHT, NEITHER COMETH TO THE LIGHT, lest his deeds should be REPROVED OR EXPOSED.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
So now if we were all born with sin and it takes the Holiness of God to break the bondage of sin how did Darkness decide to allow God into their life? How could mankind who was in bondage of sin break themselves free to ask God into their heart When God Says in his word that he chose his own before the foundation of the world in the Book of Life were sealed and close. Then he said let there be light.

Have you ever read the preceding verses? Jesus is answering Nicodemus in John 3:16. The original Koine Greek as well as context suggests the "world" refers to all categories of people in the world rather than all individuals in the world. If the latter was true, then God would be failing. With all respect, that would be heresy.

Born with sin does NOT equate to being completely darkened and without the possibility of good. Only twice in scripture does it say 'humanity is completely evil' and both those times Jesus sends his wrath, so stop making up this FALSE idea that being human means you're 100% evil and not capable of good. It means we have a penchant towards sin, our fleshly bodies enjoy it. Everyone has a brain and can think for themselves, if they want to. Which is why The BIble says "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Meaning if you haven't heard it.... YOU DO NOT HAVE FAITH. So I guess you're not predestined. you have to hear it first... before you can CHOOSE to believe it. Take note how many calvanists cite scripture from before Jesus' death to "prove" their beliefs... except the new testament starts when Jesus dies, so you're quoting OT still, which means the law is still in-play, which means you're wrong.
      Ephesians 1:13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise
Pre-destination doesnt magically 'force you to hear anything, can't make you trust someone, it doesn't force you to believe anything. You have to consciously choose to do each of these things. Why didn't God "predestine" Adam to salvation? So you're arguing God WANTS all this chaos, evil, he wanted satan to fall, and uncountable humans to suffer forever... right? That's what calvanists are preaching lol .... get used to the idea of hell.

The Calvinistic system in my opinion portrays God as puffing Himself up and desiring to magnify His own glory at the expense of the majority of His creation predestined and decreed to damnation before the beginning of time. I will trust in the God clearly reaveled in the scriptures and not one who has "secret" wills that perhaps may not desire for my redemption.

I used to be a calvinist but I found much like Mormonism there is a lot of contradictions in calvinism- here is one problem God predesinationally elects- well by biblical definition then calvinism is Universalism and contradicts the fact people make choices: Let me explain : 1 Timothy 2:4 and 1 Peter 3:9 it is Gods will that none should perish but all should come ( almagamated)- to the knowledge of the truth of repentance- so the first problem we have is " it is Gods will that none should" there is predestinational election for all. Now then we have to look at Hebrews 2:9- he tasted death for all men. Also we then have 1 John 2:1-4 that he died not only for our sins but for the sins of the whole world. and John 3:16 which we all know. so the first problem is calvinism then conflicts with itself in that only some are elected but if you believe in predesinational election then you are really a univseralist. in other words John is saying the same thing he attacks Billy Graham and Joel olsteen and the catholic for- universalism.
the next problem is one verse that our savior himself said in Matthew 25:41- depart from me into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels- wait for the devil and his angels- so therefore God never intended man to go to hell but man made that choice . How do we know this Ezekiel 3 and James 1:13-16. Now James 1:13-16 presents another problem God cannot and will not make us sin in fact we can see from 1 Cor 10:13 we see that God is faithful to make a way of escape. But here James says God cannot sin nor tempeteth he any man with sin. So then what does that mean? man makes the choice to sin. If God predestiantes people to reject the gospel and they go to hell then the Lord makes them sin which then Calvin calls God a liar.
Next problem is the fact that the Bible says in various places that God is not a respecter of Persons (2nd Samuel 14:14, snd Chron 19:7, Acts 10:34, Gal 2:6, Eph 6:9, col 3:25, 1 Peter 1:17, James 2:1). so then that also comes to the fact wait what in the world God is not a respeter of persons so then that means no predestiantional election.
Now he talks about the Spirit but Jesus said whosoever shall come unto me I shall in no wise cast out ( John 6:37). Paul told us whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved ( Romans 10:13) by the way in those verses he says that if thou shall believe in thy heart and confess him with thy mouth thou shalt be saved. Remember also according to John 16:5-15 the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin righteousness and judgement and back to John 3:16 he forgets to address 17-21 that whosoever believes is not condemned but whosoever believes not is already condemned why Because man loves his own sin and does not want his sins exposed - again J mac fails to mention the text in context and this actually shows that freewill does exist. and it is a choice from the heart.
and the favorite calvinist passage Romans 8:28-30 and before the word predsetination comes another word- foreknew so we then have another problem. but then we also must take into account Isaiah 55:6-7 seek me while I may be found Let the wicked forsake his ways. We have Matthew 7:7-8 ask and it shall be given seek and ye shall find knock and it shall be opened for whosoever asketh recieveth whosoever knocketh it shall be opened and whosoever they that seek shall find and hebrews 11:6 for without faith it is impossible to please God for anyone who comes to him must beleive that he is and he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him ( Hebrews 11:6). and even Revelation 3:20 behold i stand at the door and knock if any man open i will come in.
Now regeneration does not save us but it comes after salvaion (2nd Cor 5:14-21 Romans 6:1-10).
so Calvinism like arminianism causes some bibical problems but also with in its own complications and No John nd Timothy says it is Gods will that none should persish not God shall grant them. It says it is Gods will nice attempt by the ESV to attack this and support calvinism.
Finally lets think of this Eph 2:8-9 grace is always God towards man and faith is always man towards God so calvin is a cultist and JOhn and Steve and the former RC and Washer are teaching a cultic false doctrine and it talks more about regeneraation than salvation which was calvins thing because he believed in baptismal regenerational salvation

Bill Grumling , one question I would like to ask you based on your argument that people make choices. If this is true, then why God made only one mediator between God and man thats Christ Jesus, why not make many savior?
Lets go back to the first century where the gospel first started in israel, during that time there are people like the mayans, the aborigins, the red indians, the chinese and so on who never heard and they died without hearing it. They should have also given a savior if it is by choice.

I understand why this is such a divisive topic. However, after listening to R.C. Sproul and John MacArthur, I am convinced that they are correct about predestination. That being said, I think there is a perhaps another way to think about it. At least this is how I have been thinking about it recently (inspired by quantum theory of all things). God in his infinite wisdom and knowledge created the universe, from its beginning to end, in an instant. He is outside of time looking down on all of creation, not just the present. More importantly, when he created the universe, he had his choice of an infinite number of possible outcomes. This is similar to the many-worlds theory of quantum physics, except that God chose which of the many possible worlds to be the "real" one. This must be true, because the alternative is that He created the universe without knowing what would happen, which is not consistent with His omniscience or omnipotence. For example, it seems to me that when He created the universe, he could have created one where I was never born, or where I never heard the Gospel, etc... However, that is not the world He chose. He chose this one, which means he effectively predestined all events, including who would hear and respond to the Gospel. That does not mean that we lack free will - quite the opposite. Instead, I think He created a universe with individuals having free will knowing what their choices would be. Also, this is not merely "foreknowledge" since He could have chosen to create a different universe. I realize that this approach does not fully address the Calvanist view of total depravity and our need for regeneration to respond to the Gospel, so it is likely incomplete. Curious if anyone has a similar or different perspective.

This is known as Molinism. This makes God entirely reactionary, rather than in actual control. If God is not in control, then He is not worthy of His title.

@@douglasmcnay644 What was written isn't molinism...He is talking about foreknowledge before the actual creation, then creating a reality in which each of the Predestined are the only ones whom respond to the call.

Somehow God’s predestination and our free will work together. (We are not at liberty to choose between the two like the Calvinist and Arminians do.). They are both wrong. This is exactly what scripture says taken as a whole and not pick apart. We will not understand it fully until we enter eternity. Our duty is not to understand everything but to obey everything our Lord says.

Brother Brian, you are wise to look to quantum physics for a parallel. The paradoxes and dualities that undergird the universe, those which quantum physics have demonstrated to exist (even if they can't be yet explained) do offer us some insight. After all Paul's appeal to human culpability in Romans 1 is essentially the universe:
"For what can be seen of God is plain, for God has made it plain. For since the creation of the world, God's qualities, his power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood by his workmanship..." (v. 19)
One of the most surprising truths of quantum physics is this idea:
Nothing can be determined to have a clear identity UNTIL it is observed by a sentient observer. In fact, the identity exists ONLY as probability (generally a 50/50) up to that point. This is the Uncertainty Principle (I believe) and it has numerous amazing applications in the physical word, particularly (but not only) with the wave-particle duality of light.
Of course, it's not directly applicable to theology. But combining what science tells us about the nature of time (space-time actually), that it is RELATIVE to the observer's position, and the nature of particles and therefore ALL matter, we have our minds sufficiently blown. This should give the determinist and the fantasist pause.
I encourage you to follow this thread. You show the kind of thinking which will be useful down the road to articulating the paradox of Free Will:
      1. God is omniscient and knows all sins that will ever be committed beforehand
      2. God holds sinners responsible for their sins

The problem with that is that when the Bible talks about predestination it refers to the future of believers, not to the future of unbelievers to conversion like Calvinism and Arminianism teach
