- Mining partners Pete and Sam had such a bad season last year, that Sam, the younger of the pair, is considering whether or not to continue. However, when he discovers a $50K opal worth more than he's made in his whole mining career, he finds a renewed enthusiasm for opal hunting.

The title basically says “this miner didn’t make $50k his whole career”
he mentions he had 3 tough years, so does not sound all that profitable xD
maybe they are not " rubbing it" properly. A trip to the red light district might help
@@felicianoabe that made no sense mate
I mean in 3 years he'll hardly make more at Burger King
@@theharbingerofconflation I mean that is setting the bar pretty low, but it’s also a far less risky, less intense, less dangerous job and perhaps one that could see him become a regional manager at some point. Fundamentally the job here over time doesn’t give any pay increase whatsoever, unless you just get super lucky.
Ultimately he doesn’t necessarily need to work at Burger King he could do any of million other jobs some of them probably would pay better.

Out west in the US, there are mines visitors can enter for a fee and spend a day mining for gems, gold, ores, etc. I think you have an assigned area to work in and apparently people sometimes find something pretty valuable. You can sell it to the land owner or keep it. At least that's how the one I saw was. It's a fun day with friends or family I would think.
