Do I need a really expensive Ball head to create very smooth video shots with the monopod? I want the ability to move around the monopod in any direction and the camera stay level, but I need the ball head to have nice heavy and smooth friction, like something close to a regular fluid head feel. Is that possible? Thank you!
Thanks for these! I think it's awesome you actually take the time to read/respond/make video responses to comments. Many (most?) UA-camrs don't, it seems.

Excellent video, Kevin! I'm thinking of a monopod for hiking and Landscape photography, and am considering either this IFOOTAGE Cobra 2 C180-II (with a Leofoto VH-105 tilting head)....OR, a Sirui P-324S, but have heard of the following alleged issues. Any thoughts on these alleged “issues" or which monopod is more robust? "The Cobra 2 has a "plastic" ball joint at the base, and the 1/4 3/8 threads don't completely retract for mounting". "The Sirui's ball joint at the base gets dirt/grit easily, making cleaning necessary more often." Thank you, sir, and based on your review, I'm leaning (pardon the pun) towards this IFOOTAGE Cobra 2 C180. !
Hey Steve! All I can talk to is the monopod I have. As far as the threads not retracting, I haven’t found that problem at all on any of the iFootage products I have with this feature on their monopod, tripod, or SeaStars quick release plates. The ball joint at the bottom plastic? I don’t get that. Maybe it is but doesn’t seem like it. Regardless, I’ve had no problem with the ball joint at the bottom of this monopod and after 2 years it still works as advertised. Dirt and grit have not been a problem so far. Although I don’t get out shooting much, and rarely shoot in dusty dirty environments so hard for me to comment on that aspect. You’re doing the right thing though, checking out all the specs and reviews before making your buying decision. There’s no way any one person can tell you the exact thing you need as everyone is different and uses their gear in different shooting positions. 👍
The one thing missing on here is a safety wrist strap. I have the SIRUI P-204SR which has one. This way when you are moving the pole around and lose your grip you won’t drop your camera thanks to using the wrist strap. It has saved my camera a few times.
I really like your simple and concise explanations. Your use of terms are clear enough for a beginner or advanced person to understand. Ignore the fussy comments and stay as great as you already are! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Darrin. I usually take it that the person doesn't understand my style, who this channel is for, or is just exerting their own self-importance. I don't take offense, actually, I find it humourous. :)

Simply said....thank you for the time and energy you put into making quality videos...and I like the folksy non technical stuff you throw in from time to time...who doesn't know what a "thingy" is? That was a rhetorical question.
I have concerns about the system used for the monopod and base QR - how resistant is it to dirt(will any debris jam it); is there any play in it, or any way to remove play once it develops; how hard is it to release accidentally?
Easy to release, no play, dirt...well, no idea, shouldn't be a problem, depends how much dirt you're talking about. if it's that much dirt, id be worried more about the camera.
Loved the fact that I could record live concerts over audience heads.Very small footprint, even with the feet extended. I also attach a Zoom H1n to a Canon T7i for a second audio feed. Excellent! Bought the monopod right after I saw your video.
Nice video. I’m shopping for a monopod and the algorithm figured I needed to see this. Was correct. I can’t seem to see reviews on the C120, and stores in Toronto don’t have these in stock, not open anyway at the moment. Did you ever handle one?
I did the same as you mentioned about 5 years ago I adapted my 3 different type quick release systems to the Arca Swiss. Absolutely the best quick release system ever.
Thanks for the heads up about this monopod. Will the pod support the weight of a 3 pound camera with the monopod fully extended or extended to at least 5 feet ? Will it be steady with no hands , enough to shoot video ? If it do, I will have to get 1.
Got the Carbon 71 inch from Amazon today. I put my Canon C100, lens & a cheap Magnus head on it, on my kitchen tile floor, extended the monopod to the full 71 inches. It swayed a little bit for a few seconds, then stayed still to my eyes. I'm guessing it'll be fine recording video with no hands. but will just have to guard it from bozos bumping into it. Thanks again. I can sell my other monopods. :)
For sure. It's definitely NOT a replacement for a tripod, nor is it supposed to be that, and fully extended, it will sway with gear on it and has to settle down. I "think" I've determined most of the sway os coming from the soft rubber feet, so I'm going to attach some slide on "somethings" and see. Frankly, mounting 5 or more pounds of weight on anything 6 foot tall, unless it's a single straight 6 foot bar with 4 welded feet, is going to do that IMHO.
For the whole of his life, my Dad used to talk about a ‘wadgamacallit’. Then my Mum used to be looking for it. I never found it and wouldn’t have known if I did. People are funny and verge on slightly scary sometimes, Kevin. I once did a video on a mic. I showed it on camera, on stand, on selfie stick boom, up my shirt, down the drain, in the bathroom and the first comment I got was, ‘can it be mounted on camera’. Makes you wonder, do people do it on purpose or is it just ‘contact calls’? The monopod looks brilliant, even if I can’t stuff it in my Christmas stocking or blow it over with a hurricane. Actually, I love how substantial it is and just how quick it is to set up. I got the wife to agree to buy me one if I cleaned her car, but then she saw its price and she’s after a contract!
I liked your 1st video, and ordered mine immediately! I’m is superb! Love it! I would like to see them put out an arca-swiss top Plate as an option. This would be the most convenient for my camera L-plates
I understand that, but I like that it doesn't have the plate. I can mount the Arca, Manfrotto, or whatever to it, as in options. The QR plate they provide is not, to my knowledge, made specifically as a QR plate, since you wouldn't have that same option on other pieces of gear - its main use is to quickly remove the top and whatever rig you have setup, and move it to the hi-hat.
I had my hands on one for only a few minutes so couldn’t say. I would imagine it has the same quality as all ifootage items. I recall I wanted hard stop latches as opposed to a sliding mechanism, but that’s just me.
I love how you respond to the internet warriors. Well done! Subscribed. Thanks for the review on this "thingy" -- It's in my shopping cart because of your review.
You would have to use a good video head on the monopod, otherwise, you would do it by hand, which is possible, and what I did in this video. A really good video head for this monopod is this one: amzn.to/37pCnJ2
I would also like them to make a handle similar, but with better design than the handle that comes with the MagMod Box pro kit. MagMod dropped the ball with their handle design. The handle connects directly to the magRing that can hold two rectangular speed lites as delivered in the pro kit. However, I bought the kit and ordered the optional Profoto MagSpeedring. But profoto dropped the ball. The included and very desirable handle has no way to connect to the Profoto MagSpeedring. Magmod could/should have included an adapter that would attach the Profoto B10, or any other Profoto mono light, and like Maghandle could attach to any lightstand.
A handle on the monopod? I don't get the use of this. When you mount a video head (and should) you get handles and all that, unless I misunderstand your comment, entirely possible since I haven't reached max saturation of coffee yet. :)
Gene Waddle Curtis Potter True that. I mean, it's pennies (?) but it sure helps support all the crap I buy for this channel! Minus the free review stuff, I recently calculate I'm in for around 20Gs so far. Yikes! But it's OK, I love it!
It the thumb screw. Pretty easy to return to vertical. With a fluid on top, they usually include a level, or you use the thirds on your camera, same as a tripod. Hope that answers your question.
Basic Filmmaker cool that's what I was thinking, was curious if there was a quick way to return to optimal stability, tho it looks pretty darn staple from the vid anyway (and I guess you wouldn't want any bump of your filming and moving the pod). Cheers
I don't know of a quick way to return to exact 90 degrees exactly, without a level. You can buy very cheap and simple little stcik-on levels if you really need that. amzn.to/2Y4mLoR
I’ve been told by another person that bought one, that the carbon fiber is just as sturdy, but haven’t had my hands on it. If that’s true, i workday have gone with the carbon version.
No blue. One commenter (although rude as hell) has a good point about not showing its stability at full hight in the wind. The answer is yes. High wind? Well, even your tripod will wobble around in the high wind, so not suggested.
So I bought a hi-hat and received a pair of pedal-operated cymbals for my drum kit. But where to shove my imaginary camera ? These goombahs are the people we serve... Why bother? Well, I love the applesauce and money they so generously gave me for having a ball. And now I don't have to use correct nomenclature for my thingies - ever since I lost my Grip, Runner and Best Boy. BTW the T-shirt is brilliant, but I am getting fed up with having to keep explaining what its legend means :-) How fitting!
Gee and here I thought a "high hat" was a small set of opposed cymbals sitting on a pole actuated by a foot pedal: used by drummers! Silly me I guess ... ;0)
Don’t know as haven’t had it in the snow. It does have an area to grab, and I would think for cold conditions, the carbon fiber version would be better suited.
There must something wrong with me because I understand your terminology. Since when did we start commenting on precise measurements and choice of descriptive terms ?
Ah! Well, when we decided that we need someone to poke at, so we can do so behind the veil or our UA-cam accounts. Ha! I don't mind, these people keep me entertained. :)

You didn’t show the bottom feet of the “little thingy” what they are made of, the grip strength of the feet, how many psi it takes to tip it over. Come on man ! lol :)
You must have missed that this is part 2, the mention of the previous video that I am referring to in the video, and the links I refer to. The original video is here ua-cam.com/video/ADnlNSjXaLg/v-deo.html where I include shots.

You're a cool little thingy! Joking aside, I've always thought that insider language was so pretentious. I mean, do you really need to call a clothespin a C-47?
Yep. On a set I get it - everyone needs to know the lingo or chaos ensues. And the be fair, I should be introducing these terms to people so they know what is being talked about. See? I can be humble. OK. I'm done. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker It's a good point about introducing people to the lingo. I co-taught an audio recording course when I used to teach and my counterpart explain input gain stages and used a different word every time he explained the trim/input/gain/level pot. Here: www.amazon.com/Quick-Release-IFOOTAGE-Camera-Monopod/dp/B07F65B4TX/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=ifootage+quick+release+plate&qid=1578146666&sprefix=ifootage+qui&sr=8-2
One additional question - does the "hi hat" have some form of center locking mechanism to easily/quickly return to a straight vertical setup?
Can the Komodo K7 Fluid Head fit on the iFootage Cobra 2?
The monopod has both a 1/4 and 3/8 mounting, so any fluid head should fit.
You are too funny! Thanks for the extra review. You probably need to cut back on your coffee.
Cut back on coffee....NEVER!!! 😁
That's just what my wife always tells me when I'm hyper. But I'm with you.@@BasicFilmmaker
Wait...you think I'm HYPER? WHAT!!!!?? I AM NOT HYPER!!!!!!!!! 😂 OK, I'm cutting down on the Joe. :)
Can you fix Zhiyun Crane 2 Gimbal on it?
There’s no reason you couldn’t attach anything to the top of the monopod. Think stick with a 1/4 3/8 screw on top and feet.
when I think of a hi-hat, I think of drummers...lol
Me too!
What do think of carbon fiber vs aluminum?
I’ve been told by another person that bought one, that the carbon fiber is just as sturdy, but haven’t had my hands on it. If that’s true, i workday have gone with the carbon version.
Basic Filmmaker thank you
👍
I can't think of another question you could possibly answer. You covered it all. Every conceivable possibility was addressed.
Can you get it in blue?
David - always making me LOL! :)
Gee and here I thought a "high hat" was a small set of opposed cymbals sitting on a pole actuated by a foot pedal: used by drummers! Silly me I guess ... ;0)
LOL! Funny...I have a set of drums. :)
2:03, yeah, it's a short thingamajig you can camera or something on...
😂😂😂
Is it cold to hold in snowy conditions?
Don’t know as haven’t had it in the snow. It does have an area to grab, and I would think for cold conditions, the carbon fiber version would be better suited.
@@BasicFilmmaker is it hot to hold in hot conditions? or warm in warm conditions? and finally does it get wet in wet conditions?
It's cold in hot conditions, hot in cold conditions, dry in wet conditions, and wet in dry conditions. Amazing engineering. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 breathe😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
LMAO. Best use of smilies and text EVER. :)
Yeah but is it sturdy fully extended? You didn’t fully extend it! Lol
Did too!!!!! Wait, didn’t I??? 🧐
Thank god you assured me that mine is longer... now I can go to bed dreaming of little thingies... puhh...
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lol! I feel your pain! It must be frustrating having to have your videos include loads of disclaimers and explanations catering for people with poor common sense. 😂🤣🙏🏾
It happens. And don't tell any of these people, but I always LMAO when I see those pokey irate comments. Shhhh....it's a secret...it they knew that, they'd stop doing it. :)
Basic Filmmaker 😂😂😂
👍
They kind of knocked off mogopod with the new monopod
You mean Mogopod knocked off iFootage? Yeah, happens al the time. Someone invests all the money into the R&D and development, then someone else comes along and makes a similar knock-off unit.
@@BasicFilmmaker I owned a Mogo pod 2 ears before ifootage came out with their cobra strike 2
Too funny!
if you search and google hi-hat, you're gonna get a list of foot pedal operated cymbals for drummers...
Which is AWESOME! (also plays drums). :)
Rock on! Love the review-can’t wait to get thus thing.
Doesn't fully replace a tripod, but it sure is handy to not ALWAYS having to use the tripod. Let me know how it goes.
Brother I liked the first review better when you were talking my language 😜
👍
You didn’t show the bottom feet of the “little thingy” what they are made of, the grip strength of the feet, how many psi it takes to tip it over. Come on man ! lol :)
I’m such a loser. LOL!! That being said, I bet you would have. 🧐
Basic Filmmaker : LOL
😀
Great video. But, no sample footage??/ WHY???? WHY??? Epic fail
You must have missed that this is part 2, the mention of the previous video that I am referring to in the video, and the links I refer to. The original video is here ua-cam.com/video/ADnlNSjXaLg/v-deo.html where I include shots.
He has footage in part one - epic fail!
😂😂😂
Don’t entertain the self appointed “filmmakers”. Most know words but don’t have any valid experience themselves. Oh and the first item isn’t technically a “high hat”.
True that Johnny. And OH NO - please don't fire up the hi-hat discussion again please! LOL! :)
Hi hat... little thingy...
Who cares?!
I call it a mini stand!
Question: Is that made of carbon fiber?
There are two versions, carbon fiber and aluminum as well as different lengths.
@@BasicFilmmaker Dang... quick draw on that answer!
Compliments to you though despite of the negative critics... 😊
Yeah, I don't mind. They're fun to play with. :)
For that scenario, it's essential.
I appreciate what I learn here, regardless.
Thanks Conrad. Always gracious you are.
hahaha
:)
You are charming even when clearly annoyed.
penguinYT1 LOL! That is the nicest comment I've received about my demeanor this year. ❤
😂
👍
I didn't want to watch the video. What color is it and will it clash with my shoes? 😜
It automatically senses your shoe color and changes accordingly. Like a chameleon. 👍
@@BasicFilmmaker Thank you. I was worried.
Finally, someone who knows how to ask an intelligent question.
Gene Waddle Doesn't make coffee though. Hmmmm....definitely a con. :)
👍 😀
Hahaha, I like americans, they sometimes get confused so easy. Need two videos for simple stats and facts. But cool, that YOU want to make things clear, so you can move on.
I have another five follow-on videos planned for this. (Joke). Thanks!
