  • OK, maybe I'm a bit TOO excited about this monopod, but after using a TON of them, this is my all-time favorite monopod, battle-tested at NAB.. It ticks all the boxes: ✅ Build quality ✅ Options ✅ Stable ✅ Design ✅ Good company. Apologies for the few glitches in the video - the Tech gods are playing with me this week. :) bit.ly/SubscribeToBasicFilmmaker
    #basicfilmmaker #monopod #iFootage
    This is NOT just another monopod!
    I met up with iFootage at the 2019 #NABShow, and Ian was kind enough to lend me one of their iFootage A180 Cobra II monopods - the aluminum version (they have both a carbon and aluminum version).
    My initial thoughts were, "OK, another fancy monopod. I'll check it out and return it when I'm done." I couldn't have been more wrong about this.
    It's not only a show stopper, literally 20 people stopped me to ask what I had at NAB, but is the best and most functional monopod I have ever used, and the price point is incredible.
    EVERYTHING on this unit screams high-quality and precision engineering, and you can tell these guys really thought everything through, from the o-rings on the slides, the smooth machined aluminum, the stainless springs and screws, the molded all around rubber footings, hard stops on the legs, patented quick release plate, the ability to make this a mini tripod in seconds, a 71 reach, and the list goes on and on.
    I HIGHLY recommend this if you're looking for an excellent monopod for your videos.

    *Yep! You can tell when I'm really excited about something, and this iFootage monopod is THE ONE for me. Apologies for the few glitches in the video - I think I made the Tech Gods mad. 😎 How's your monopod rate compared to this one? Any cool ways you use yours that are unique? Let me know in the comments! And, THANK YOU for subscribing to the channel and for your continued support!*

      I was going to comment on the audio glitches. I think we are all used to seeing clumsy jump-cuts on youtube, but the audio pops just need to be cross-faded out. Love the enthusiasm, lol!

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  5 років тому +3

      True that Daniel! I was going to either re-shoot or smooth out all the glitches, re-render and upload, but I ran out of time and I thought, what the hell. I ain't perfect, and people should see that. But yes, a crossfade would have been appropriate. The problem was the card was glitching, and hard cutting out the video and audio at the same time. I am doing a short video on how this happened, and how to avoid it. Thanks!!

    I agree completely! I keep the base in my bag at all times! Versatile enough for pretty much any situation where you need to get close to the ground. I work at a wedding hall on weekends and I see the monopod in use all the time. Best part is that it takes up no more space than my 100-400 lens!

      It's a great monopod, but if it's one or the other, get a tripod. No monopod is going to replace a tripod fully, unless you just need something light and travel-friendly with a small footprint.

    I have owned the carbon version since it was introduced! It is fantastic but I actually see in your model that they have made a small unadvertised improvement to it to address the only problem I have with it. They have put a small knurled edge to the red quick release locking rings. Mine is all smooth so having very dry hands I sometimes find it difficult to get a good grip on them as my hands slide off. A work around is to use wide rubber bands so no big deal! I also own their Mini jib, S1 slider plus their other Cobra strike monopod, all of which are of the highest quality. I have definitely become a fan boy! 😃🙏🏾

    Fantastic review! You got me sold on this. But(!!!) size does matter and I find it difficult to figure out what's the minimum height is of this thing if you detach e-ve-ry-thing! It says around 70,5 cm - but is that with the foot and the top and bottom screw thingy? Would love to have this in a hand luggage and that 55 cm of height (and a bit more if you place it right :)). Sure I could go for a smaller model, but that would kind of ruin the idea. So my question is: What's the absolute minimum height if you detach as much as possible?

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  5 років тому +1

      Arca Swiss plates are the bomb. I've had the Manfrotto ones for quite a while. This thing holds a LOT of weight, and I think any smaller fluid head would work. Not that it couldn't handle a larger one, but that would defeat the purpose of have a small travel unit. Do you know if the Arca and Manfrotto plates are compatible?

    • @scottlamp3097
      @scottlamp3097 5 років тому +1

      @@BasicFilmmaker I believe the Manfrotto plates are wider. I have a couple tripods that I have attached Arca Swiss clamps to Manfrotto plates so all my stuff is standard. It's not pretty, but it works.
      The fluid head, ball mount feet combo can get you some great movements. I have a at least one fluid head that has 3/8 thread on the bottom instead of the big ball mount. • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  4 роки тому +1

      It’s pretty easy...just pull down on the red part, and lift up on the center thing. I don’t think it involves physical strength. They machine these to very close tolerances, and yours may be very tight at first. With the mono pod only, practice pulling down on the slide, and removing the top a number of times, possibly twisting it a bit, and it should loosen it up after a bit. Well, 71" is 5.91666666667 feet tall, call it 6 feet. I'll measure this later with a tape and include those dim's in the description, as many would like to know full height with minipod attached, without, and compressed length with minipod and without for determining if this would fit in their carry on luggage.

    Hey so random update, after 60 days of waiting on B&H I cancelled my order, i was very excited about getting one so i ordered from a canadaian company. after waiting another 30 days or so the item was lost, but i ended up contacting the post to get it, and found a badly damaged box. I had to come back and watch this video to make sure i wasnt crazy, but pulling back on both of the red quick release spots did absolutely nothing. I cant get this thing to seperate no matter how hard i try. Am i doing something wrong? its most likely going in the mail , but i need this for an event in 5 days, so if there is some advice so i can benefit from this, im all ears. Cheers

      What the hell? Contact iFootage like right now and see if they can help you. Weird occurrences you are having.

    I use a monopod frequently. But, I have a compact fluid head. It's a great combo.

      Absolutely. I am looking forward to see what iFootage recommends for a fluid head on this. I have the older 701HV from Manfrotto, and they stopped making it, which is too bad, as it's awesome.

      @@BasicFilmmaker I make all the camera attachments Manfrotto, but other mounts to sliders, jib, etc Arca-Swiss. Wish Manfrotto was Arca compatible. All those proprietary fluid head mounts should be Arca. I have a Velbon that I shaved the top off and mounted an arca base. If you can"t slide and balance your camera they're worthless IMO.

      Agreed. I've been considering moving to all Arca plates, but they aren't compatible with my Manfrottos, of which I have a ton of. Wonder if it's so close a tiny bit of customization would fit?

      @@BasicFilmmaker Two issues 1) width 2) safety catch. The catch is the problem. I have two Manfrotto 502 heads; hate that kludge ratchet lock system.

      Yep. Order some test Arca plates yesterday. I love the bigger base on the manfrotto, but HATE having to slide them out. A recent cam purchase and the battery door is mounted on the bottom, which means I need to slide the cam out on the manfrotto to change the battery. Arrrgh! Yep, Arca vs manfrotto QR plates video coming soon. :)
