    Sarah, if I had registered for a class anywhere to learn this, I'm sure I would've paid a pretty penny. And I wouldn't be able to see it over and over. I so appreciate you and what you and Jonathan produce together. It's just first class.

      Thank you so much Kay for this. This one was a mammoth task to both film for me and edit for Jonathan (he will say he got the worst deal!) so it's nice to know it's truly appreciated. I'm gonig to do the birds as well but I need to work my way up to that one!! xXx

    Sarah, I have considered found silk stitch too difficult to consider using. I did try it once, but the result convinced me not to try it again. Your presentation is so good it, though, has helped me to possibly reconsider!

    Probably the most concise video I've seen for thread painting I've ever seen. Just getting back into embroidery after being an avid cross stitcher for 35 odd years. Last time I did an embroidery piece was in 1980...when I was 10.

    Thank you for this detailed tutorial; your explanations and Jonathan's careful camera work made it very clear as to how to create the desired result. I like that you relied upon your senses in deciding to eliminate a color while working rather than trying to force another color into the design simply because it was in your original plan. I guess this is where building confidence and learning to trust our instincts comes to the fore. Thanks for demonstrating that!

    Thank you so much Sarah. I'm working on the Royal School of Needlework Silk Shading course at the moment. Watching your video has provided me with more useful information and demonstrations which I can now transfer to the RSN design. You've answered questions I had about how to change the angle of the stitches and how to incorporate new colours into sections. I bought your RSN Silk Shading book recently and will keep it by my side as I work through my course.

    Very useful. I've been watching Chinese and Vietnamese embroiderers on You Tube and, while I can sort of see what they're doing, your explanation makes the whole business a good deal easier to understand. And, by the way, flat silk thread, while more challenging than stranded cotton, is a walk in the park compared to viscose. Thanks again for all your help. Oh, and could you please have a go at fish? I could fancy making a version of those gorgeous carp and water lily embroideries that you can see in Chinese restaurants. No pressure.

    I have absolutely adored the split stitch for years! I like it much better than the back stitch, in fact, I usually do a split stitch in place of a back stitch when I can. However, I do the split stitch a bit backwards I think.🤔 I have just found that it is easier for me to go down into the former stitch instead of trying to come up thru it. (Im glad you mentioned it too). I appreciate you doing shading again. Ive found it frustrating in the past. I think I gave myself just too many shades for my projects so Im very glad you spoke about that a bit. Very helpful indeed👍! In fact, the only time Ive done shade stitching only on some individual birds! I thought to myself how pretty it wld be if I tried doing the individual shading inside each bird to give the feathered look in the end. I must admit that it was the first time I ever tried doing the shading & filling in the subject completely with threading. It was extremely difficult bcs I had no idea what I was doing. However, it turned out beautifully! I thank God for that grace of His blessing me to finish it! Truly, bcs it was a gift for a friend whose daughter had passed away & had the tiniest lil shaded bird to the side of a well phrased scripture. Was indeed thanking God that it was over as well. I desired to do more silk shading,(mine were not silk threads either). Anyway, I wanted to do more but more shading of different birds on a quilt seemed far too difficult. I simply put the entire quilt & my numerous birds away for the time being. At least until I learned more about it or desired to pick it up again. Hopefully yr video here & others will cause me to pick it up again. Thank you for the inspiration! 😊

    Tapestry rug hooking has a system of sorting colors for shading which is simple & can be preplanned. We give the shades of a color a numerical value. Say lightest 1.. darkest working to the darkest if 5 values darkest would be 5. Then it is easy to do a sketch where the values will go, and the direction worked. We do tend to outline for background contrast when needed.

    Thank you very much Sarah, that was absolutely brilliant!, and I'm still quite startled at how your five steps completely manages to demystify whatever it is you're trying to stitch, as I was watching I suddenly felt that sense of 'I don't know what I'm doing' starting to evaporate, and as ever you gave me the confidence to feel I could now tackle a basic design by myself. And being someone that usually always fumbles at my edges, well no more, I can't believe I actually now know what to do with them - and really looking forward to seeing the birds you were doing too! Thank you for all the hard work you put into that, truly a masterclass with the master!

    I love this. Question when coming up through a row of stitches do you come up between the stitches or split the stitch? I have been practicing for a while and have found this very helpful. Also when doing flowers do you do a split stitch all the way around each petal?

    • @SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
      @SarahHomfrayEmbroidery  8 місяців тому +1

      I try and split the stitch although I noticed in some cases on this I haven't quite done that. It's hard to see when you are fliming it, the overhead camera is in the way!
