I remember this battle, I was just a lad, this was probably my first rpg like this in my life. I couldn't afford the whole game, so I would just re rent it every weekend from blockbuster with my allowance. I was so invested at this point. Was so ready for vengeance. The minute that magic barrier was down I was sure we were going to mop the floor with him. Was surprised at the fight he put up. I remember the feeling of joy and relief, with a tinge of sadness after the victory. Thank you for posting this. Brings back memories. Funny, at the time I would have never imagined myself a grown man so many years later, with kids of my own, married to someone named Alys (Alice).
I remember this fight with the theme and how it ended. It was my first time playing an RPG where I felt defeated from beginning to end. The worst part was losing the character I thought was the protagonist. Alys. 😭
This was the first big battle in my whole life as a kid. An unconquerable foe. An almost impossible task. Many losses. I went away for the morning, got a sheet of paper and started planning. I wrote down spell combinations, heal cycles, and made myself some sandwiches and a hot chocolate, and committed to spending the afternoon trying to beat this unbeatable monster. Nothing can describe the feeling when the screen started to turn white.... and I'd finally won This music plays loud in my head to this day, and reminds me to never quit, never back down, push on and fight
Replaying this game for like the 30th time on IOS. The soundtrack is perfect still. This game had amazing music. The major boss theme was so fucking sick.
Probably one of the most underrated boss fights of the RPG genre. It's a tough boss fight, but the sheer emotion of (*SPOILERS*)- coming back to fight Zio was incredible. The OST is the cherry on top.

@@michaelleon8289 I remember back in the day of renting RPGs from the video store, and every weekend getting home hoping that your save file was still there.

If you use the wand again dark force's head glows green. It has no impact on the battle. I just used to think you had to do it again to neutralize the black wave too.
Yeah, it would have been nice to have gotten some back story. Unfortunately, he was basically just another Lashiec; a powerful wizard corrupted by Dark Force and used by him as an agent of chaos and death. Rather than Zio, nowadays I take more notice of the image of Dark Force he conjures. back then, I remember all my friends mistaking his exposed gums as a big red nose. Thinking back on it, it was kind of funny, but also kind of irked me. It's not a nose, dang it.
According to an interview with Yoshida Tohru, there was a planned backstory for Zio, his whole deal is that he lost to Rune as being a successor to Lutz legacy and dropped out of Esper training as a result. It was just cut due to time constraints. However you can tell by looking at his move set that he was from the Esper Mansion as only those who underwent that training can use moves like Hewn.

Nobody said that the OST in this battle is incredible, it gives you goosebumps
For how much I see people complain about how the Genesis sounds, its synthesizer could create some excellent musical masterpieces when utilized well.
The whole OST of the game was amazing!!
I never hated someone so much.

Phantasy Star 2 has better one.

Absolutely. Rage. Hatred. Sorrow. Justice. This fight has it all.

Great fight. Felt super angry at Zio for killing Alys. Such a satisfying battle.

I wander. If Zio was in DnD 3.5. Wich charakter class was he? Clerik+BlackGuard?
Oh Zio, Holy One!
*falls on the floor in 16bit convulsions*
*has a seizure*
Gamertag since gamertags were available.
Brings back memories!! I just sold this game recently. :(
U sold it
This guy looks cool, and then you kill him halfway through the game and there's no backstory to be seen. Kinda disappointing.

It's been awhile but why are you so weak here? I thought there was one of those medic panels right before this fight.
Don't rightfully know. Most of the recordings on my channel are first time playthroughs that I record first, edit later.
