They asked David if he got talking points and all Jack had to offer were talking points he knew absolutely nothing about.
I don’t get how David sounds so convinced by his own arguments when he’s so clearly out of depth on topics he knows so little about
Crazy how I see a lot of "independent thinkers" & "hear both sides, bro" people really tune this one out. This episode is falling on deaf ears for those who refuse to leave their echo chamber
To say nothing of his message and content, Pakman is so smug and pretentious (he didnt used to be this bad) so i can see why people shut down when he talks especially in opposition to their existing views.
@@funstuff192 But you dont even see people really denying his points, you just see "this is a dumb lefty" without addressing any points whatsoever - relying solely on ad hominem attacks

I think Jack is falling for a lot of online narratives vs facts. If you learn everything from pundits and social media, you’re going to be lead astray. You must go out and experience things, talk to people who are actually connected to these issues. Many people online rarely leave their zip code and are speculating about everything based on what they WANT to be true.
Yep. He's an idiot
The way the frame questions just screams, I don't really know what I'm talking about, but I heard about it from somewhere and that somewhere seems to be right leaning sources.
@@Sck519agreed, I’ve always thought that too
@@Sck519Which is alright, for the purposes of an interview like this. Any good commentator should be able to provide an easy rebuttal and explain the proper situation, which I feel like David did. And Jack isn't deep enough in to dig his heels in on those talking points, so it doesn't really derail the conversion.
@@Sck519 This. The vast majority of questions were straight from Fox News talking points, where if you take 30sec to look into it, it's easily debunked. These poor kids need to get out of their bubble. They're too young to be falling into that Boomer mentality.
48:18 David is so good at breaking Strawmen. "Give me an example" and Jack just freezes in place. No you weren't "forced" to read, more than I was "forced" to read To Kill a Mockingbird. Even Graham throws him a bone, trying to give him a way out by pointing out that if the teacher was so inflexible then writing some pandering slop would've been the easiest A+ ever.
Exactly
His example was not being forced to read the book, it was his expectation that he had to analyze it a certain way. That expectation theoretically could have been real or imagined, but in today's climate, if a teacher operates in a political domain and doesn't go out of their way to make students feel like they can express diverse opinions, it is definitely because they're trying to pressure you. It's not even plausibly deniable.
In college I took a class on socialism and the professor was very accommodating and clear about his welcoming opposing opinions. But I also took a politics 101 class where no such care was taken, and it eventually became brutally clear that the professor wanted us to only express leftwing opinions. He told us our job analyzing the writings of Edmund Burke, for example, was explicitly to figure out how to refute his philosophy.
In the socialism class, I was able to write a 31 page report on the genuine socialist influences behind Nazism, as opposed to other fascisms, and got an A+. From a recognized historian on socialism. Now that's intellectual freedom, and that's how college should be.
People's grade should not be determined by if they agree with the professor politically or not. I think that's the point that Jack was trying to make. Would you agree with the point that he was trying to make.
@@tradfluteman typically, even if you write something the professor disagrees with, as long as you backed up your position well, they'll give you a good grade. we hear horror stories but i think most professors remove their bias when grading.

When I was in college, the only time I had professors outside of PoliSci try to push their politics in class was from conservative professors denigrating Obama. Dissenting in opinion with teachers and professors is something I've done my whole life; often arguing positions I didn't sincerely hold to induce a more interesting conversation. I don't believe conservatives are generally afraid to share their true beliefs in educational environments. Perhaps it happens more often in less credible (more idealogical) higher educational institutions.
I do sometimes hold my tongue in certain situations, but that's not because I fear for terribly negative responses, but because I don't see any value in the effort, especially if I'm just tired and the situation doesn't really call for it; it doesn't really matter for the discussion.
If I'm making small-talk to a stranger on the train during the pandemic who complains about feeling pressured to take a vaccine he doesn't believe in, I'm not going to die on that hill. This also holds for crazy progressive ideas I hear on campuses. I just don't think any of them will come to anything, and if they ever do, I will be the first in line to argue against them; as it stands, however, the "ROI" of making to contention is too low.

49:09 This is a great catch by David. Don't let people frame discussions in a disingenuous and intellectually dishonest way. Call out these low effort attempts early and often.
I would not call the framing of that question disingenuous at all. For example…
If an employer requests an employee to send out an email by the end of the day, and if they don’t, they will be fired…
Is that forcing the employee to do it? They could just say no and get fired… Or is that simply a requirement of the job?
I think 2 things can be true at the same time.
Also - I agree… always call out intellectually dishonest points. However that was not intellectually dishonest, the difference of using the term forced vs mandatory had nothing to do with the point I was making.
@@TheIcedCoffeeHour two things can be true at the same time yes, but it’s about “framing” and adding personal connotations to facts right? People who think homelessness can be solved with money have never truly helped or interacted with a street person.
I live in NY and deal with homeless people significantly more than most people. I promise you, housing and rehabilitation is at the very least a first step into lowering homelessness, to suggest otherwise is just ignoring countries all around the world.
What did they loose first? hope for a better tomorrow or their marbles. If a person never falls as far as we let people fall now maybe we wouldn't have so many lost people.
With all due respect, poverty and destitute conditions definitely lead to a deterioration of mental & emotional conditions. I understand where youre coming from but from my experience in social work I believe this is a misguided take.
We didn't always put kids in school, now we do and almost everyone is literate. Did we 'solve' illiteracy? No, but saying literacy can't be solved with schooling is so pedantic you wouldn't possibly be able to mean it in good faith.
You implement broad solutions for the broad problems and as you whittle away the easy stuff you reassess what's left and formulate new policies to attack what remains. Not every homeless person has genetic schizophrenia, some just need a steady prescription of meds, a shower, a job interview and some new acquaintances, all of which are easier to acquire when you're not completely broke.

Dang some bias really came out strong here. "Why are blue states failing" is a joke of a question lol
How is it a joke of a question? Are blue states like California not failing?
Considering over like two thirds of the country agrees with the premise, as does you know the actual data, really doesn't seem like that insane of a question. May need to check your own biases lol. You can't blame crappy net migration numbers on a party that haw almost zero control in these various declining states.

Like so many conspiracy theories, the "Biden was drugged up!" idea has too much of a plot hole to make sense: If they could just give him a drug to hide cognitive decline, there's no reason that they wouldn't just give it to him every time he's doing public speaking to avoid the whole narrative of cognitive decline all together in the first place.
Its an obvious conclusion that they hyped Biden up and got adrenaline going through his system but unlikely it was through the use of drugs. Meaning it was not his normal state
these people live in a media bubble that every day suggest biden is a vegetable. of course, they would think he must be on drugs or something. can't be that we misjudged him.
This episode seems oddly paced. Jack seems to lean right, which is perfectly fine, it's just interesting to see how he pushes on leftist guest vs. folks that lean the other way.
This was a great episode!!!!
He’s correct about those red states being subsidized by blue states. California is a world economy and one of the largest in the world.
You are forgetting that those red states were blue when the subsidies were created and that California was red when the business environment was created to make silicone Valley a tech and financial hub.
I also notice that when organizations make these lists they don't exclude government worker income or the federal money required for a military base or federal forest.
California is like $60 billion in debt. 😂
@@mikeymike2843 yes, and? They could still buy and sell most red states several times over.
@@mikeymike2843Debt of $60 billion with a GDP of $3.4 Trillion. Context is everything. They fluctuate between having a debt and having a surplus. They had a 97 billion surplus.
The real trip is when you look at the last 5-6 presidents and how they came into office vs how they left. Clinton came in with a deficit left with a surplus, Bush came in on a surplus left on a deficit, Obama came in on a huge deficit left with a deficit cut into less than 1/2 even after the financial crisis, Trump came in on a deficit and left after increasing the deficit by more than any president in history by a huge margin, Biden came in on that largest deficit in history and he’s now cut it in half and looks like it will drop again.

Balancing the budget should not be that difficult. Historically we've been able to capture, at most, ~17-20% of gdp without negative effect on economic growth. Next years budget can't exceed 18% of this year's gdp. Force Congress to operate without a massive deficit.
Popular in theory. Arguably very unpopular in practice.
Wasn’t Clinton the last time budget was balance with no republican votes. He handed Bush jr a surplus economy and bush jr gave tax cuts to rich and tanked the economy recession then Obama gave trump a good economy and trump gave tax cuts to the rich and gave us a recession. Hmm now that I think about vote Republican president we get recessions vote democratic president we get good economy
Very difficult when the largest employer in the USA is the federal government.
What are you cutting? And you have to cut deeper because there are feedback loops with government spending.
raising taxes or cutting spending are the only ways. and the biggest part of the discretionary pie is the military, ironically the only thing that garners significant bipartisan support for maintaining or increasing its current budget
I feel like a lot of times conservatives aren’t silenced in academia, they’re just so scared they never try to dissent. The vast majority of professors can disagree with the premise but still grade the thinking behind. Of course there are outliers that get more coverage but that doesn’t represent reality
I got an associates degree from a community College and it was fabulous. I went to state college for two semesters. I was taking sociology classes. I was absolutely told that I could not have a differnt opinion. That I was to listen and understand.
The first time I tried to speak up was when we were discussing our Indigenous population. Many in the class were discussing them as if they were extinct. My professor clearly only knew what she had read in a book. I grew up in a State with a large native population. Large portions of my state are Reservations. Long story short. I made a comment about how harsh they have it and how our Native population need so much help and deserve so much more. I was basically told that I'm to emotional and ignorant to the suffering of the black people bc i live in a mostly "white" state. She said that to me in front of the whole class. I wish i could have gotten my bachelors at the community college, I learned so much more than at the state school.
If you are scared to dissent you are being silenced :)
the reality is conservatism doesn't stand up under scrutiny. it has a terrible historic track record. and often conservatives are raised to be so within a conservative community. they aren't used to that level of push back until they enter college and then they realize they get their dumbfuck ideology pushed in because they no longer live in a conservative safe space.
There is some "picking on the conservative" that can happen. Because there are so few conservatives at that age, the professor will constantly push for the conservative student to talk in every class discussion. I can see why you would just keep it to yourself to stop from having to have 20+ to 1 debates every class.
Thanks so much for having Pakman on. I want to evaluate what he has to say, but his daily content is short form hyperbolic crap that just tows party lines and gives super ‘safe’ content that the American Democrat party wants to hear
It's actually not hard. Many countries have adapted these policies.
We need to pay attention and adapt accordingly.
You mean like Venezuela or Cuba? Ya that worked well. I know you don't mean Finland. Tell me you're smart enough not to compare a country with 370 million people to a country with 5 million people. We have a massive underclass to support here thanks to poor border control, and the inner cities of liberal run cities that have buried a generation or two of people with no chance. You're comparing apples to oranges. The free market is the answer, not more government control. What we have in our country is the furthest thing from a free market; our government has been completely corrupted by the biggest corporations. More freedom is the answer, not more government.

That is a terrible take. Sure, I could probably find a PhD that claims the earth is flat that doesn't make the shape of the earth an opinion. You cannot throw your hands up in the air and just go I guess we'll never know. Assuming you do not have the relevant background to look at the primary source material about a given subject and you have to rely on experts, try to at least look for some consensus among experts for that proposition and be willing to change your mind when new evidence comes to light. If it is an area, we collectively know little about then withhold opinion on it depending on the circumstances.

1:13:30 then the next question is what is the level of pesticides used on GMO crops vs non-GMO crops and why would they even bother developing crops that are more tolerant of pesticides if they didn’t plan on using pesticides?
Obviously there is nothing wrong inherently with GMO crops. We’ve been doing that for hundreds of years. Nobody who is serious about the topic actually thinks the danger comes from the crops themselves. How do we know this? Just look at the super expensive fruit in Japan. Those are all technically “GMO”, but nobody complains about the dangers of those fruits. GMO itself isn’t inherently bad. What’s done with it could be, as with most things humans do.
I agree GMOs are fine, but I disagree that people don't feel a danger in GMOs themselves. It's a very well known marketing to tactic to write things such as "all natural ingredients, No GMOs" in the same breath. Just through sheer repetition people have a natural negative idea of them. But I also think you've identified a clear case of people not really having a well founded view on a thing, e.g. they easily dismiss that view when they see really cool looking Japanese fruit. Alsoo, from a visual perspective seeing a juicy fruit in person is very different, to drinking a popper in which you don't see the ingredients. Essentially, it's easier to play off people's fears the less certain they are, and especially so when you highlight those fears and implant them in people like with most groceries. So, my point is seeing someone have a really cool looking fruit also plays on other factors than just the gmo bad thing. But yeah, I'm very pro GMOs, they've kept costs of food down a tonne, dramatically increased the efficiency of agriculture in general and are almost always beneficial. As useless background, I briefly worked for my state govenments agriculture department and looked at optimising crop layouts given you \have pedigree info on crops.
Should we defund roads and highways because some people drive bigger vehicles, studded tires, etc. or some people just drive more, and that's not fair to everyone? Sometimes these "differences in belief about human nature" Jack keeps alluding to are really irrelevant to the baseline of utilities and infrastructure (telecommunications, police/fire/paramedic services, military, and so on even down to GPS) that we've collectively agreed upon. The framing of those looking to consider additions to this universal baseline as being based in some sort of naïve belief in a practical goodness in everyone is really, whether intentional or not, a pretty ideologically poisoned thing.
Would taxing unrealized gains also mean getting refund for unrealized losses? I just don't get how it can practicality be applied.
Think of it as you're taxed on the wealth, not on an unrealized gain.
@@Hallahanify I think the two are different: Wealth tax vs tax on unrealized capital gains. I was talking about the latter.
