    In this video, we test various AR-15 magazines for function in order to find the top contenders for an upcoming magazine torture test. The magazines tested include many new production mags as well as some that are more obscure or simply older patterns. All of these magazines are available on the market in some form or another, and common street prices are provided in the video.
    The test firearm is a custom AR Pistol chambered in 5.56X45mm, featuring the Dolos Removable Barrel System available from Copper Custom Armament:

    Oh, the irony of the people in the comments blaming the weapon for the reliability of the magazines. I'd rather have Magpul or Troy magazines that will work flawlessly in ANY rifle than a magazines that only work in an off-the-shelf rifle.
    Isn't the whole point of a test like this to show how the magazines work under BAD conditions? Not in some brand new, $2000 Colt off the shelf?

      InfiniteGrim Not to mention that he completely threw away BOTH of the "CAA" mags because ONE failed to feed, the other worked flawlessly. Plus he fucking threw half the mags to the side, and praised the other half based on compatibility. He constantly slams on the gun when he doesn't need: to pulling the bolt back as hard as he can which is unnecessary, as well as slamming on the bolt release.

    Something to consider for your next test: when inserting the mag- tap it the same # of times, do not hit foreward assist (sometimes you did and sometimes you did not), try to fire the same "sequence" with each mag...for example: 10 slow shots then empty the mag (or whatever sequence you choose). Being consistent across mags would be more "scientific" Overall a worthwhile video.

      Is it worse than other aluminium hand guards? Honestly, I am not a big fan of any aluminium free floated forends on a carbine. It doesn't help accuracy enough to be an issue in a carbine & they all seem to get hot pretty fast. I do like the idea of the quick detach though. I am waiting to see how they work after a while. I will deal with the heat if they get glowing reviews. If not, I will just keep my plastic hand guards on my carbine. My free floated full length rifles don't get shot fast enough for heat to become an issue.

    • @TheBrackishCoast
      @TheBrackishCoast 10 років тому

      Its more the gas system than the hand guard. It's shorter, so it's hotter than a longer system would be and it has a booster to increase the gas pressure attached to the muzzle. Then you're covering barrel, the gas tube, gas block and the chamber area with a single hand, with no room for ventilation. It's the nature of the beast. A VFG is the only good way to get around it and you can't legally install one on a "pistol". With a longer system you will typically just be gripping a area over the barrel and (a cooler) gas tube that has been well ventilated. Big difference in heat soaking after running several mags.

    For the finale test I would like to see it done using a standard rifle. By that I mean something that is used by the vast majority of shooters. A pistol is fine it looks cool but to have a fair and reasonably balanced view, I think all the mags should be tested through a standard rifle. It's what most shooter will own.

      @Iraqveteran8888  10 років тому +39

      We are going to use several rifles for the final test. Bear in mind that this is only one run with one rifle, so it can't be a definitive answer. However, if a magazine is made to run in an AR platform, it should work in any AR. All these people saying "well you didn't use an actual M4" confuse me, because an AR is just adult Legos. Not all guns are exactly the same either, so they might run just fine in a standard ar, might not even fit properly in a proprietary lower. I have a mag tactical lower on one of my ar15s and it is no where near mil-spec anything. I'm sure you will get some good info from the testing, but you shouldn't be calling any of them junk just cause they didn't run in your non standard ar perfectly, especially since the caa window mag ran just fine.

Loading 30 rounds with closed bolt (some people say you can only load 28 with closed bolt but I think that only applies to GI mags). Drop mag on hard ground after shooting and reuse. Roll over with a truck (empty or full or both) , and reuse. Shoot a round through the actual shell of the magazine and try to use.

      John Johnson from where I live, you can find TAPCO mags in most of the stores for a cheap price ($10~$12).
      I bought 1 TAPCO mag for my AK 47 and 1 for AR 15.
      BOTH of the mags have the issues:
      1/ it is hard to load, can't be gentle with it. 'Cause of that, it will either damage the rifle or the mags.
      2/ it always fail to feed the second round to the chamber.
      I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy the TAPCO mags. Yes, it's cheap, but you will put your life in risk when bad situations happen.
      Just spend couple more buck and you can have a nice PMAG magazine and it will never fail you.

    Very surprised the Lancer’s took a dump. From my experience, the Lancer L5 AWM’s are THE BEST mags I’ve ever used/ran in 5.56 NATO/.223 Wylde chambering’s followed by Okay Surefeed’s & PMags.
    1) Lancer L5-AWM’s
    2) Okay Surefeed’s (the C-Products Duramag’s are great too)
    3) PMags (Gen 2 & 3 have ran equally well)
    Everyone’s experiences will surely be different depending on many factors. But those are the 3 brands of mags I trust most if my life was on the line. Also interesting that the military just “officially adopted the P-Mag” to replace/phase out the aluminum USGI’s. There’s lots of interesting info on the topic out there (the torture testing, the pre-requirements, the finalists, etc). Bottom line is I love IV8888’s torture test & meltdown vids. Eric & Chad have a significantly higher firearm IQ to most other testers which is why I always value these vids 👊🏼🗽🫡🇺🇸⚔️ - Pete

      Any spring, and I do mean ANY SPRING will get slightly weaker over time, if left in a compressed state. Common sense, y'all. I think they are built to still be strong enough for function, anticipating future wear. If they start giving you problems, replace them. No big deal. I leave some of my gun mags loaded, and some not. It's according to how stiff the spring is. My PT 111 G2 has very strong mag springs. I leave them loaded. My TCP .380 has weak springs. I don't leave them loaded, unless I'm carrying it. Just use your own judgement. Nobody 100% knows the answer to this question...

    Long time viewer, first time commenter here:
    I think you're going to have a lot 3rd variable options using used magazines as I'm guessing these are from personal stock. One could stake defense in a mag based on the age and health of a spring, or housing causing issues that a NIB mag would not share. In the torture test, I think it would be most equal to use NIB mags and the same factory ammo (lot too if able) for the most reliable results.

    I've never had a Lancer AWM fail me. Never. I've also never seen that many failures in a row, even with some of the poor quality mags which were tested. It should be considered that the actual firearm could be contributing to the issues. I suggest using a factory built 16" AR in a second round of testing.

    My favorite mags are Pmag Gen 3 and Lancer AWM. I’m slowly building up these two for my AR’s. The other one I highly recommend are UTG mags. For less than $10, these are super reliable and rugged, may not be as rugged as Pmags or Lancers but rugged enough that you can use them outdoors, drop them and kick them no problem. Highly recommended if you wanna save your Pmags or Lancers.

    I think magazine springs are not talked about enough regarding mag function in any platform. There’s a ton of Pew related snake oil out there, but spring tech is extremely critical IMO. Things like flat wire and braided wire springs being infinitely superior to round wire… Chrome Silicon springs lasting 10-30x longer than music wire… and of course proper tensile strength for its job. I’d highly implore everyone to go and watch David Tubbs’ (Tubbs Springs) video on AR buffer and AR magazine springs as well as Bill Geissele’s vid on his Super 42 braided wire buffer springs. Can’t forget to mention Bill Wilson either. My point is springs can make or break the way a magazine, recoil spring, and buffer spring function. A spring isn’t “just a spring” any longer. I exclusively use flat or braided wire springs made of chrome silicon springs or 17-7ph heat treated stainless steel for all my pistol recoil springs & rifle buffer springs. If I have issues with a magazine that I know should be working, I’ll upgrade the springs to Tubbs, Sprinco, ISMI, or Wilson Combat and that will usually fix the issues. Highly recommend the vids above ☝🏼 if you’re a nerd like me 👍🏼🤓

I have only EVER been able to get a full 60 rounds without issues out of it ONCE, and that was after using Remington DryLube on the internals. After that, it went back to being terrible. Also, if you ever get a chance to see a Surefire in person, have the person who owns it take it apart to show you the internals. It's ridiculous how many things can go wrong inside that mag.

    The dolos is not a good platform for testing anything. The spec for an AR barrel is 35-80ft/lbs of torque on the nut. This rig just loosely holds the barrel in a lock. I bet it can account for most of these failures. I fail to believe that Sig mags outright failed to feed. Get a normal AR and then do some tests.

    • @tommyguns14able
      @tommyguns14able 10 років тому +4

    • @skylarscaling
      @skylarscaling 10 років тому +9

      So if the Dolos caused the problems, why did the Magpul and Troy mags work flawlessly? I'd rather have a magazine that works in ANY gun than a magazine that only works in off the rack guns.

    • @skylarscaling
      @skylarscaling 10 років тому +2

      mpk1414 You're missing the point of how magazines work. The bolt carrier pushes a round out of the magazine into the chamber. A failure to feed is either caused by the magazine (nosedive) or the rifle (feedramp) TYPICALLY. The rounds in question were not hitting the feedramp, they were nosediving in the magazine. That means poor magazine geometry, NOT a problem with the rifle.

    • @murmaider2
      @murmaider2 10 років тому +3

      skylarscaling
      you fail to mention that the barrel has guides for the nose of the bullet. The barrel/receiver alignment is crucial in proper feeding. If you notice he keeps having to tighten the rig, its possible that in between mags it worked itself slightly loose and you had bad feeding for whatever mag happened to be used at that time. Sig makes spectacular mags and I never seen them outright fail to feed. This gimmicky AR is not a good testing platform.

    This test REALLY needs to be done on SR25/AR10/LR308 mags as the popularity of that platform has grown massively over the last few years to the point where I'd bet there are almost as many AR10/LR308's out there as there are AK's.

    The first CAA magazine worked flawlessly, and he even commented about picking some of them up, then at the end he completely disregarded it from any further testing because the 2nd mag had issues. The same was true for the Lancer mags, the first one worked fine, but because the second one which was a different model had issues, he discarded the first one as well. Also he said he wasn't going to use a GI mag in the next torture video, but he ended up including one anyway. Also I think to eliminate the firearm from being a negative factor against the mags, it would have been better to use a standard AR, not a home rolled gun.

      I've never had to clean my mags for any of my AR's. Are all AR's equal...NO. However, a well made AR is just as good as an AK. Hence comes down to personal preference. I shot one of my BCM AR's about 1600 rounds with no failures. I then decided to clean it. Would it have fail at some juncture...of course. Anything mechanical is going to fail. As long as an AR is lubricated it work dirty. And you don't have to take the gun a part to lub the BCG up. And with Nickel Boron BCG's you can go much longer with little lubrication initially used. The above mentioned BCM AR was running with a Nickel Boron coated BCM bolt carrier group.

    I havn't had reliability issue on the CAA mags but I agree loading them is way too irritating. When putting the in the round, the one under it tends to creep forward and catches the top of the lip and prevents you from putting the next round in until you slide it back to the back. So you basically have to have it where it is tilted slightly back while loading.

    An idea for your channel: Many are curious about the ideal barrel length to yield maximum muzzle velocity for the .22 Long Rifle caliber. You might start out with a 24" barrel, testing several different loads, then shortening the barrel in 1/2" increments and re-crowning. Continue this sequence down to 16" legal length. Then compare results to arrive at the "ideal barrel length" that yields the highest average muzzle velocity. If anyone on the web is capable of this experiment, it's clearly you guys!
