    Hi Megan. Hope you are well. The judge in this was played by the late Patrick Troughton, who was the second DOCTOR WHO, from 1966-1969.

      @@MeganRuth One of Patrick's later roles was as the magician Cole Hawlings in the BBC adaptation of John Masefield's Christmas tale, The Box Of Delights. One of his last roles was as an odd job man in the very first episode of the detective series Inspector Morse, starring John Thaw, called The Dead Of Jericho. One of the UK's most prolific television character actors, he could turn up in all sorts of series, from adventure series in the 60s, magicians, a priest in the film The Omen. Quilp in The Old Curiosity Shop. An Aztec priest in the children's series The Feathered Serpent and comedy sketches like this one and as a comic villain in The Goodies with Tim Brooke-Taylor, Bill Oddie and Graeme Garden.

    The shows they were based on were, What's my Line or 20 Questions (similar format), Mastermind, Call my Bluff, Blankety Blank, Give us a Clue, It's a Knockout (game show), The Price is Right and The Good Old Days (Victorian music hall show).

    For the record a British judge never uses a gavel in court (unless he’s talking part in an auction at the same time).

    Hello again Megan. If I''m not mistaken this script has Ronnie Barker (aka Gerald Wiley) written all over it. He kept his writing credits under pseudonymous wraps for a number of years. What a polyglot of talent he was. Keep 'em coming babe,

      That's so interesting! I didn't know he wrote under a pseudonym. Will do! 😊

    In case anyone doesn't realise, this is all based on various UK TV game shows of the time. I haven't seen this sketch before though I'm 71 and have always lived in Central Scotland.
    Haven't watched this channel before but I recommend you watch MAD TV, The Drunk President 😂🤣🤣

    Its funny how Ronnie Barker sentences himself to prison in Porridge.. That is his voice as the judge in the opening credits..

      @@MeganRuthironically we meet the judge in question later on in the show, a justice Rawley.

    I'm guilty of lying to the jury they believed that I was a happy innocent man but instead I was a guilty grumpy old fool

    Is this the game show from which Michael Palin's "Blackmail" and eventually, "The Running Man" evolved?

    While keen-eyed Dr Who fans over-focus on the presence of an ex-Time Lord presiding as judge, the mastery of wordplay and observation takes centre-stage here; as it always did and we kind of took it for granted. Between Corbett (whose timing should be used in computing) and Barker (whose delivery made him the most in-demand comic actor in the country - even for parts that would later be taken, rather brilliantly, by other big domestic stars), it all seemed effortless. But that's the real trick to it.

    • @MeganRuth
      @MeganRuth  4 місяці тому

      Yes it did absolutely seem effortless! They were definitely comedic geniuses.
