Sony Videocassette System (Rare early VCR promo film from the 1970s)

- Here is a classic demonstration video for this early VTR machine, from Sony's U-Matic era. Conceived around the same time as AVCO's Cartrivision system, Sony's first commercially available videocassette player provided for those with a certain fortune a chance to record anything, anytime in a method that was much more convienent compared to the 1/2" reel to reel machines that dominated the home video market in its early years. Due to its enormous cost (when released, it cost about the same as a small car), it was mostly reserved to commercial use, a trend that continued with the release of the Betamax in 1975.
This shows that there was at least some hope of making U-matic into a domestic system at the start. In the end, it became used in industrial, ENG and occasional broadcast applications. Note that this was not a Sony-only product. JVC (and maybe others?) also make U-matic equipment. The format was still being used into the early 2000s. I've even seen adverts recorded on U-matic with web addresses included.
It even has stereo sound? Now that's advanced... Stereo TV broadcasts wouldn't become commonplace until the late 1980s...
I'm surprised it took about 30 years for stereo to develop from their namesake music players to TV. I'd think sometime during the '70s, around or shortly after the time it became common on radios it would have taken off. But I guess the equipment made it cost prohibitive for awhile. Many early VCRs also didn't have stereo, not becoming common until around 1985 or so.
I remember stations would do FM stereo simulcasting so you could get stereo sound on TV. In 1985 I remember a local TV station interrupted their programming one evening to inform you they were turning on their new MTS stereo system at that moment.
WOW! I'm sold. Where can I purchase these... "video cassettes" ???
Ebay, flea markets, auctions of old broadcast equipment etc...🤣
This was in the bad old days when technology in my country, Australia, took longer to become available. It wasn't until 1980 that VCRs were sold in Australia and it wasn't until 1989 when my parents first bought one.
Yep I can relate
I'm hearing you Jimmy, I bought a Sanyo Betacord VTC9300 from a pawnbroker in 1985 at the age of 15 for $30. It wasn't until 1987 my father seeing what his son had acquired finally bought a JVC VHS all be it begrudgingly having fought against the Japanese in WW2.
Not a word from the presenter mentioning the U-matic system!
Excellent Excellent collection, We always love SONY products,as early of 90s my dream to Buy SONY TV,VCR AND MUSIC PLAYER ❤❤❤❤.
Dear Pannoni 8, I am making a music video for my retro band, is there a way you can give me permission to use some of the footages? I plan on giving full credit where it’s due. Please contact me asap. Thank you.
U-Matic in my age of Video never household can afford! only Video2000, VHS or less Beta was in the Austrian, Graz market at this mid 80s. A Videorecorder cost 2moths income and near nobody have one. Till the price is falling down to a monthly earning then the people buy it. Or in the Video-Shop they rent the Player to there Videocassettes. Most of them was Funai VHS Player.
What's the video recording system William Shatner's character has in the Columbo episode Fade into Murder? It was filmed in 1976.
I don´t get the idea of this film. Just showing a lot of different clips. Nothing about the technical and practical aspect.
wow.its like watching the future in the present which is now the past but still present....eeeeeeeeeeeh maybe.
Well this is creepy at 4am
*U don't know nothing about U-matic*
I have the original copy but for the Asian market language is in English also approx 10 mins. The intro is the same but main content is different.
2 Audio Channels, STEREO!?
I was around then....but this is still absolutely trippy!
What has this lightly dressed girl to do with it?
I have sony betamax sl T7 ME . Tanx . Frome iran ❤
I have worked a lot with the U-matic system in the 80s and 90s. Both with portable recording and with editing (with much more modern machines than in this video!)
Very advanced effects from the 70s in the beginning!
This is a old VHS to see the Old First VCR System for Broadcast: U-Matic with Stereo. Later it was Betamax with the exact Band Transport (in U)....
What format was this? Its certainly not Betamax, the cassette is too big for Beta.
I just did some checking and it looks like it's a U Matic system.
I remember sitting in front of the tv watching our favorite movies on the vcr during my childhood. And the big wooden zenith tv.
What year is the promotional film exactly?
The tape/video didn't have an exact date, but I'd say around 1974 or so since this appears to be pre-Betamax.
@@pannoni8449 Yes, it is before Betamax, in fact it could be between 1971 and 1974, but I'm not sure, that's why I want to know the exact date of the video, thanks
@@rodrigocortesn8794 I would say it's from 1971 or early 72' as the VCR being showed off is a Sony VO-1600 from 1971
@@Dedicatedtolivinginthepast Actually the VCR shown is a Sony VP-1000 from 1971.
@@joesam7744 Thanks for the correction! A few of those early Sony U-Matic VCRs look quite similar
Please like on this video. Awesome

That's a big VCR
You oughta see one in person “big” doesn’t describe it! It makes the early VHS machines look compact
It’s not a videocassette recorder (VCR). The units shown only play. They don’t record.

Fantastyczna reklama, super że nie zaginęła! ❤️👍🙂
😲 a jeśli by ktoś jakimś cudem przywiózł z zachodu ten sprzęt to byłby na celowniku służb specjalnych i prawdopodobnie zostałby mu skonfiskowany!
Dlatego dziś po latach sam mam w kolekcji kilka Sony Betamax, kilkanaście VHS, do tego wiele kamer na różny system kaset video 🙂
Pozdrawiam Serdecznie wszystkich miłośników starego video 💪👍
The time of 90s was so precious ❤❤❤
curious as to who the guy in the video is
