4 Styles of Boxing Guards
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 чер 2024
- One of the first lessons you will learn in boxing is "keep your hands up!" But there are different styles of guards, which are dependent upon your body type and strategy for the fight. That being said, don't limit yourself to just these 4 -- instead, use this video as a way to get creative and find your OWN style. In today's video, we will cover:
1. The Philly Shell Guard
2. The Peek-a-Boo Guard
3. "Mexican Style"
4. The "Drunken Boxer"

Can you break down Charlie Zelenoff’s signature timeout technique?
GreatDragonGaming yes please Shane I gots to know
It's all about the set up. You've gotta make sure before the first punch is thrown, everyone involved knows it's 'light sparring' then just fucking unload on the guy.
ZHEHAHAHAHAAAA
You are not ready for such a godly technique.
Only the goat Charlie is worthy enough to know that technique
Philly stance kinda resembles a knight covering behind a shield and attacking with a sword.
Great metaphor.
Dudensky i see it now that you’ve said that
Dudensky exactly brotha
Well gotdamn...
@James Blackwood You can only end him rightly with the pommel.
"Drunken Boxer" stance,is exhibited every Saturday night at clubs around the world!
😅😂🤣
No, that's "knocked out guy" stance.
Facts lol
🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
Miguel Cotto is an example of a Modernized Peek-a-boo and Mexican style guard.. his old school mix with new school tactics Are just beautiful to watch.
But get destroyed by Pacquiao
Clintlloyd Ligutan so? He gave it a go didn’t he?
what do you expect my fellow toxic peenois. Acting like pacman is the best fighter lol
@@clintlloydligutan2163 I'm pretty sure about 95% of Pacquiaos opponents get destroyed anyway so...
hajime no ippo
Can you make 4 styles of kickboxing guard ?
YES KICKBOXING GUARD PLEASE SHANE
OMG YES DUDE
Yes please
NO MAUI THAI
Yes that would be awesome
The best example of The Drunken Guard is Emanuel Augustus
Emanuel "robbed more times than anthony joshua fought" Augustus
But don't let that distract you from the fact that Fury was robbed
Nate diaz
His nicknane was the drunken master so...
Or Tyson fury
Anderson Silva
1.Philly Shell
2. Peekaboo stance
3. Cross Guard
4. Long and High
That's what I know.
3rd one is definitely not the cross guard, the cross guard is looks more similar to the philly shell
I forget the name of the boxer, but he had a weird stance. He had a decent career and he laid right fore arm on his left forearm and pointed his left elbow out.
Almost like he was going to plow through your guard/offense with his elbow.
He had success because it was such a rare stance but it made his jab awkward and his right hand less powerful.
@@MrSirFluffy sounds almost like Archie moore
@@MrSirFluffy ua-cam.com/video/sRPjJEuOOC0/v-deo.html
What I like about Shane's videos is that he gets straight to the point ... no corny intro, no unfunny comedic remarks and laughter in between, no annoying commercial. Just no-nonsense .... imagine if he had ALL of those things included, which is the case with some UA-camrs, then there's now way that I would watch all his videos.
I'm too old for fighting, but I love these videos. I always come away with a deeper understanding of techniques which let's me appreciate matches more. Good stuff.
You’re never too old
Never too old 🙏🏻
People told George Foreman he was too old and he came back swingin’
Never too old
I never recommend a beginner use that hands low style. Until you got a lot of rounds of sparring under your belt, maybe a few amateur matches, keep that guard high and tight
Yes coach!
Definitely
Haha I watched some RJJ before sparring one day and got fucked up because of it😅 I got some clean slips though
Chris Towers 3:13 he says this in the video
4 styles of Muay Thai guard
Osiel Maldonado Good Shout
ORIGINALINDIVIDUAL thanks
Osiel Maldonado congrats he made a video in it
funkaholic M thanks man
Osiel Maldonado u suck
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. Thanks guys so much for completing the moves during explanation! Coach PJs head for example goes back after the punch for Coach Shane even though the blow is not in real time speed. It demonstrates the effectiveness of a punch thrown and also what happens on the defensive end should an opponent drop his/her guard and leaves him/herself open. This is a channel worth watching and I do these drills. Lots of fun
Hey coach can you make a video discussing that "Mexican style" guard? I really want to try it.
TiltedTrash I use it it works well against taller opponents
@@Max-gc2yz exactly. I am a smaller fighter myself and have tried this style but I would appreciate it if someone were to explain it thoroughly so I may master it.
@@arcanewrath Well its either my sparring mates are trash or it does work for smaller fighters lol cus its always worked for me.
Raphael not true buddy
@@Max-gc2yz what's the stances real name I'm trying to look it up ?
Always with the good stuff my man! Big up!😎
You forgot cross arm guard, made famous by the Legendary Archie Moore. How you missed that one
Cerrome Afrocanus and Frazier
Big George
Shavers
James Toney
Ken norton
I found this extremely informative and helpful. Good video.
What about the Arturo Gattti guard where you block with your face? Take 1 to give 1
Druth nah gatti took 5 to give 1 still one of if not the most exiting fighter in boxing
RIP Aturo
He actually was a solid technnician. The problem is that his heart used to mess up his focus and willingness to box.
Fullshark 09 yea if you watch his 2nd fight against Tracy Patterson or his 2nd against Micky Ward or the one against Jesse James Leija you’ll see that he def had some solid boxing skills
RIP
As a boxer I really appreciate the boxing videos as I can always see my improvements after practicing
I was waiting for this video thank you ❤❤
PJs never ending hand movements will be the death of me .... 😂😂
I'm glad someone else said it lol. He's smart and I like him but his constant gestures and movements bug me
SUM MO' COMMENT ACTION I mean they are fine , but he always does the same 1 ,2 combo and funny gestures 😂
@@self-madejacobo8281 what bugs me is everytime Shane finishes a thought he nods or winks or grins. Like he's trying too hard to look interested lol.
SUM MO' COMMENT ACTION thank god some one else thinks the same as me. His movement is the cringiest thing on the internet
Yo thanks Coach Pj and Shane! Love the channel
These videos are great, I'm learning a lot! Mad love from Brazil! 🇧🇷
I love this type of videos
Thanks for the knowledge keep running!
Thank you Shane and Coach PJ
I feel more confident now thanks you guys
Thanks again coach Fazen!

🙏👊
I wanna see these 2 guys go at it all the way.
In two words? WELL DONE.
"Keep em coming"
Hell yea mentioned my favorite fighter JMM. He was so technically gifted thanks to also nacho
As a 🇵🇭 Filipino I like JMM yeah his defense so unbreakable
Great vid Shane , I’m bout to practice all 4 !!
I never knew the "Mexican style" was a thing. I trained in Doryoku Karate when I was a kid, and then went on to box recently, I mixed the two stances together which feels natural to me and I ended up doing that exact stance.
Thx! Really needed it.
First: very good video.
Second: I'm a box enthusiast and I really like your videos. I think it would be amazing if you guys made a video with further explanation of these defenses, their advantages, disadvantages and application in a sparring session. Just to see the different styles in action
So much beauty when Coach pj hits him in play
Ippo made the peek a boo stance popular. How not gonna talk about Ippo
Lol
What is an ipoo?
Lord Lobov It’s an anime about boxing
Hajame jono ippo😂🥊😍
Lord Lobov Well Ippo is the main character
My preferred guard style: Modified Philly with low/extended lead hand. I use it to to keep something in someone's face at all times, easy guard testing, fast up jabs, and good energy conservation. Only down side is the lack of defense, but if you've got good head movement, it works. At least for me that is :P
Man you guys are so likeable and obviously knowledgeable too, respect and thanks for the info :)
Very good!
I appreciate your stuff..
Emanuel Agustus used both Philly Shell and the Drunken Style technique
Edit: Watch his highlights
Love these vids bro thanks! Mua Thai would be great sometime 👍
Hey, Shane! Any chance we’ll see a raw version of your spar with Kevin Ross? :)
Peekaboo is also my favorite, I love this stance
Awesome video shane!!!
Awesome breakdown
Ur newest sub love from scotland mate ❤❤👏👏
Great video for fight tips
Great video! Thanks for the tips! Loma is beautiful to watch! :)
I used to do a modified “drunken boxer” stance because I could use the excuse that I knew how to defend even tho I didn’t and was just lazy with my hands xD
Philly shell also gives you a deadly lead backhand slap
stockton 100
works for me
Another great vid
I’m officially a subscriber
bro i was looking at this video getting into boxing and i didnt even realise i naturally use the 3rd one, i thought it was silly that i did it but now i realize its an actual style. thanks
Coach PJ doing his best Jabrills impression at the beginning.
All these are beautiful 🔥
Amazing tips.
great video guys,
Coach Shane,
Realise this is an older post, and a good one at that. Do you have a video that talks about what boxing techniques can and cannot effectively be brought to Muay Thai, K1, and MMA?
thanks dude. keep it up
Awesome Video 👏
Tnk u brother for give me awesome technic. .. Gaurd style is also develop now when I see this video amazing. .im just now beginner
Can you do a video on things from kickboxing, boxing and must Thai that don’t work or not work as effectively in a street fight or MMA
Did PJ ever fight pro Shane?
Hey. Great video !
Could you perhaps cover the topic of this Mexican guard?
love this
Thank you helped out alot
the phillys shell reminded of this on boxer how was in my gym he was amazing it was impressive how much he tryied
Good stuff im learning
Freaking outstanding tutorials
The Mexican style stance is also great to set up up body punches and come up whit upper cuts watch juan Manuel Marquez highlights you can get kind of an idea it’s awesome all stances are great tho it just depends whitch one you adjust to ! 🥊🥊🥊🥊
Valentin Corea do u know any videos that teaches this
@@opungsopung4920 for sure brotha go on UA-cam and put Romanza gym the they will be throwing mitts and showing you the Mexican style techniques
Awesome video for it's short length. I didn't realize I was doing Philly as my natural preference. Mexican Style might as well be called Bruce Lee style because JKD uses a similar idea to it, except lead hand is your dominant hand.
I love Mike's peek a boo style
yay early and just in my study break :D
I wasnt aware that i was using all these until i watched this :D
The philly shell is very hard to use if you’re shorter than your opponent. You will most likely get tagged with the right bc the shoulder roll is probably the hardest to master
Great video
Hey Shane, what do you think of using the shoulder roll and cross armed guard in MMA? Do you think it will be effective?
Have you guys ever seen coach PJ stand still? Lol
Love ya PJ
After he almost got touched @ the 2:02 mark he didn't know what to do with his hands 😂👏🏾👏🏾
Can you make one for mma...
Suraj Shaw he talked about stances and they include guards. go check out the older video and enjoy the dreads.
@@evancarr Okay...
Suraj Shaw do you train mma?
@Lando _ No because MMA gyms are rare in India. Highly discouraged upon society them dumbasses. You're lucky if you find a boxing gym. It's mostly Karate and Taekwondo McDojos
@@anadisharma7355 Mumbai?
peek a boo is my favorite and the guard that i use
thanks you!
This is lit🔥 I’m new to boxing and I find my self resulting to the drinking style when I get tired I’m sparing or I believe I out match my opponent but I didn’t know what is was called but I guess I use the “Mexican style the most”
Number 3 is just having an active guard (control you opponent with feints and lead hand control). You should have an active in stance number 1 and 4
Great vid
I like to keep my right elbow up guarding the face. One dude rocked himself swinging wild on me like that.
nice vid.. ty
I love the peekaboo style
what a fast foot work the tall guy have amazing !
2:35 Usyk also uses this, good for holding the opponent at the distance
3:50 Tyson Fury best example
Hey Shane! been following your videos for a long time. Have you thought about tackling Muay Thai styles and muay femur? I feel like people have a wrong idea that muay thai is all about marching forward and plodding on a light lead leg and exchanging blows till they fall. Would bbe esp. relevant with mma guys like Adesanya and Darren till showing that more varied style and blend of MT (even Masvidal blending the boxing and Muay thai)
Would love a video too about blending Muay Thai with some Boxing and more complex footwork and some of the kicks from full contact kickboxing/Karate/TKD.
Cheers from portugal!
The only thing u guys left off about the philly shell or grand rapids roll is.... Your right hand has to cover two spots (orthodox). The right side of the face but it also has to go to the front of the face/chin to party and block jabs and potentially other shots (With an open palm facing the opponant). If u leave your right hand on the right side of the face u will eventually get caught by easily blocked punches. That's all great video 🔥🔥🔥
Can you do a video about pulling and countering?
Mexican style and philly shell is 🔥🔥🔥
I am very interested in the Mexican style. Who would you recommend I should study? Is their any instructional clips out there you would recommend? Thank you for your help.
please make a video about how to beat philly shell fighters
can you do one for kickboxing/MT?
I swear Hajime No Ippo gets me wanting to box
The reason why I joined boxing, and I'm loving it. Learning the basics and the trail and errors it's cool 🦋
The philly stance looks the simplest... but in reality requires the most skill and ability
When are more gloves coming out?!??
Some training to increase the speed of the hit?
