    Finishing. Points. At. The. Net. I love this match, watching Venus come to the net so often. It's the one thing that's missing from today's game... Many of the women are lost at the net. It's why Ash Barty is having success, because she's not afraid to come forward and finish at the net.

    It's funny how these days Serena is all everyone talks about. Back in the day, its was the sisters. They both were on par and dominated. I really wish Venus didn't get sick, it stole away so much from her. She was/is/and always will be a great champion.

      Venus is/was an extraordinarily thoughtful and kind person. She was capable of playing really well against Serena. She stepped aside to give Serena the glory. Serena would talk about how Venus would beat her alot in practice. People should study how Venus played against everyone else and how she played against Serena.
      Take a good look at the athleticism Venus had. She's the best athlete to ever play women's tennis.

      @@gregoryphillips3969Do you mean to imply she deliberately lost against Serena?
      You cannot be serious.

    • @gregoryphillips3969
      @gregoryphillips3969 10 місяців тому

      @@fundhund62 There's more to certain things than meets the eye. People can think what they want. Serena constantly lost to Venus in practice. They both talked about this. Venus would often speak about how bad Serena wanted to win. From the standpoint of athleticism there's never been anyone like Venus Williams in women's tennis before or since.
      There were situations where they played in certain matches where Venus would play incredible throughout a tournament and then differently against Serena. There's was talk at the time about how Venus played against Serena in certain matches. All things being equal just to the naked EDUCATED tennis eye one could say the Venus was the best athlete but Serena was the mentally tougher player. Venus didn't serve and volley enough. Even Richard Williams once said that if Venus ever served and volleyed like she was capable of you could shut down the game it would be hers. She would have been unbeatable.
      None of this matters now. They both had great careers. Venus and Serena will be giving hall of fame speeches soon.

    Historically players always played to Graf's backhand to prevent her booming forehand from dominating. The Williams sisters just didn't give a shit and played to either side. They not only absorbed the power but returned it . I don't think Graf was used to this strategy. Her slice backhand was also surprisingly ineffective against Venus here.

    • @MrJupiterjazz
      @MrJupiterjazz 7 років тому +35

      The sisters didn't care because they know they could hit harder and move better than Graf. I guess the pace of play wasn't as fast back then, because the Graf forehand isn't that big of a shot. Especially when she needs a lot of space and production to hit a winner off of it.

      Illya Kuryakin what the FUCK are you talking about? I literally just said Steffi was my favorite player. I watched all her matches when i was a kid you spoiled sack of meat. She was an amazing player, but she was not at all a ‘good sport’ until later in her career and talked about her opponents with brutal honesty, often says they had ‘no weapons’ to hurt her. If Serena talked that way, she’d be pillaged. Serena has had terrible behavior on multiple occasions before, but she’s also had very different bias against her than Graf.
      I don’t need to be lectured about tennis from the likes of you, who clearly is revising history.

    • @JamesFrew1
      @JamesFrew1 4 роки тому +1

      iam rips ok, no. In no century is Monica the goat. Seles never got the chance to show how’d she’d develop. Graf led Seles 6-4 before monica’s stabbing. In their slam finals, Seles beat Graf twice, Graf won once. Of the years where Monica was at her peak, Seles led Graf 4-3. Monica in no way completely dominated Graf, though she obviously had the edge in slam finals. There’s no way to tell how long she could have sustained that.
      What we lost was a potential Federer-Rafa like rivalry. The press was so shocked that Graf finally lost, they portrayed Seles as overly dominant. She may have gone on to be, but we’ll never know.

    Always great to see comments about 'athleticism' in the women's game over 22 years ago, but from 2007 onwards, the real lack in the women's game, was an absence, at the top of the women's game, of any kind of 'CONSISTENT', challenge in the Grand Slam tournaments, which allowed sometimes retired, overweight and undeserving players to return and win titles, that would never happen on the men's Tour.

      Steffi was part of the generation where a handshake was just a handshake. These days, it's all about putting on a big and fake show. I remember at the 1989 Australian Open, Graf defeated Sukova and their handshake was quick and abrupt looking. But they were seen laughing and chatting together during the trophy presentation. When Graf defeated Sabatini at the 1988 U.S Open, 1988 Olympics, 1989 U.S Open, 1990 Zurich, and 1990 Worcester, Sabatini gave quick handshakes while barely looking at Graf. At the 1995 Birmingham event, Zina Garrison defeated longtime friend Lori McNeil and their handshake was just that, nothing more nothing less. And there were no smiles, hugs, or kisses. That's because the handshake was just a procedure at that time. The emphasis on putting on a show during the handshake is IMO really superficial. A lot of people also criticized Serena for her handshakes when she was younger whenever she lost. But I honestly never saw what the big deal was. But I guess she had to learn how to play the 'game' though when it comes to putting on appearances.

No teenager has won a grand slam since the williams showed up. It shows you how mature the game has now grown from the weak slow era.

    Boy Oh Boy, I used to love the way Venus used to play. Attacking the net, moving so swiftly around the court & just taking it to Steffi Graf. Venus' only problem was her 2nd serve, at times her tentative forehand & her lack of experience. Cause Venus' match vs Steffi at the 1999 Wimbledon quarterfinals was her match to win. Venus had over 20 Break points & she only converted 3 or 4. That was her lack of experience at winning the big matches & Steffi had alot of experience. These crazy Steffi Graf fans really believe Graf could have taken the Williams Sisters & Steffi would have won a few matches like she did but Steffi wasn't used to the pace, power & quickness of both Venus & Serena. Steffi definitely made the right decision to retire when she did.

I remember once, Serena took it out on an old line umpire threatening to kill her, she was losing the game and then because of that she just retired in anger and wrath refusing to play the few points left to lose. That was only one epysode. I never saw Steffi arguing much with an upire in times where the absence of Hawk eye made it more likely, needless to say she never insulted any umpire or quitted a match just because of losing it like Serena did.

Serena threatened to shove a ball down a line judges throat because she felt the line judge was wrongly calling her on several foot faults. Due to this outburst (which was rightly called for abuse) and a call on racket abuse after losing the first set she was penalised a point. This ended the match because it was match point for Kim on Serena's serve. Serena never quit this match. If you can refer to a time when Serena quit a match because of a squabble with a line judge or umpire I would love to see it because I don't believe it exists.

      Graf was part of the generation where a handshake was just a handshake. It's not like today where it's all about putting on a big and fake show. I remember Graf and Sukova were friends back in the 1980s. When they played each other in the final of the 1989 Australian Open, their handshake was quick and abrupt with the two players barely looking at each other. But they were seen laughing and chatting with each other during the trophy presentation. At the 1995 Birmingham event, longtime friends Zina Garrison and Lori McNeil played each other. After the match, their handshake was just that with no smiles, hugs, and kisses. It was just a quick handshake, nothing more nothing less. The emphasis on the handshake these days is IMO very superficial.

She slayed the main 90s ladies and Steffi's top competition like 9-1 against Seles, 7-3 ASV etc lol and obviously a tight h2h to Steffi 2-3 herself ( one of those losses were when she was 14-15 yrs old, still it was a competitive match) I wish she had come and peaked in the early 90s coz the field overall was perfect to dominate and I'm sure she and Steffi would've had a tight rivalry.

      Nonsense.
      Even a peak 2000-03 Venus lost (among others) 36 46 to Coetzer, 16 26 to Dokic, 1-6 1-6 to Hingis, twice to Maggie Maleeva, 1-6 4-6 to young Henin, 4-6 4-6 to Schett (FO 01!), twice to Shaughnessy, to old Seles, chubby Testud, to Zvonareva.
      Even an old, over-the-hill Steffi would have handled Venus.

    haha most of henin fans here forgot that henin starts to dominate tennis when williams sisters retired from tennis in 2003 just after wimbledon and before US OPEN because of their half sister's death ! that's why henin start to win gran slam tournament !
    i remember this sad matter like it was yesterday !
    that sad event just relieved henin of williams sisters !!! before this , henin was as overhelmed as their other oponents !!!
    only an extra sportive incident and not a regular defeat of williams sisters , allowed henin to dominate his sport but not totally! she never won wimbledon !

    Since Graf's retirement the pool of talent in the tennis world has been very shallow, which gave rise to the Williams sisters. I will say Venus has far superior net skills than Serena. Serena based her career on hitting the ball so hard nobody could catch it. I personally hate what tennis has devolved into, modern players lack basic tennis skills

      @Big Time I thought Steffi was way past her best in this match. But that is neither here nor there because Venus was still figuring out her game. When it comes to Graf and Williams, their best years never coincided IMO. I thought Graf's best years were 1988 to 1989 and 1995 to 1996. I thought Venus' best tennis came at around mid-2000 to about 2002 (she played some especially breathtaking tennis during the summer of 2001).
      Watching Venus during her prime years in the early 2000s makes me sad because she was never really able to replicate it because of her health issues.
