Microwave Corn on the Cob - No Shucking & Silk-Free!

- Have you heard that you can microwave corn on the cob? Did you know that by cooking corn on the cob in the microwave you can make it PERFECT... EVERY time? No shucking & no silk mess. Whether you live in an RV (like us) or a house, the microwave corn on the cob trick rocks!
One of the best parts about microwaving corn on the cob is that you leave the corn right in the husk... there's no need to shuck it. You only need to trim the end off if the ears are too big to fit inside your microwave. Each ear takes four minutes on high power, so we set our microwave to 12 minutes for 3 ears (Pro Tip... when you put more food in a microwave, it has to run for longer to cook it all). When your ears of corn are done cooking they'll be steaming hot, so be sure to use oven mitts to avoid getting burned.
With a sharp knife, cut off the large end of each ear. Even though you'll lose a row or two of corn kernels, you want to cut above the point where the stalk connects to the cob. Then grab the husk at the small end and squeeze the ear of corn out the other side... like you're squeezing a tube of toothpaste to get out the last bit.
Microwaving corn on the cob works like a charm and will leave your ears perfectly cooked and virtually silk-free every time!
The piano music is my own performance of Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag from 1899.

1:43 minutes, fantastic. Informative and no "artistic" bullshit
Just got rid of my fifty year habit. You have literally changed my life with the information and demonstration all in a simply humble way. No pot, no wasted water, no drying rack, and no heat and steam in the kitchen. God bless.
DUDE! You d’man! OK I had some doubts, but gave it a try and WOW this is the best technique ever! I just ate some of the best tasting corn I’ve had in a long time. Two ears ready in 8 minutes and tender with no silks. Nothing but praise for you. No more shucking, pulling silks, boiling/steaming corn for me! Be sure to wear sturdy gloves, this stuff is HOT!
This morning on New York City's Z100 morning show (and syndicated on about 70 other radio stations in major markets around the USA), Elvis Duran talked at great length about how he was going to "change your life" by sharing a video he'd seen on UA-cam. That's right.... it was THIS VIDEO... OUR video... about microwaving corn on the cob!! Thanks Elvis!!
BTW.... it's an amazingly small world... we're originally from the New York City area, and we heard about this when a friend e-mailed us all excited this morning after seeing the video Elvis talked about, and then realizing it was OUR VIDEO!! :-D
Yes yes, Elvis is how I got here! brilliant way to cook corn, can't wait to try it!
Worked to perfection. This is the only way to cook corn on the cob... Thanks
Another great tip ... Thanks
Saw this somewhere before, nice for the validation video. *****Note: My brother-in-law used a Corelle plate for nuking their microwave popcorn, one day he nuked some popcorn and as he took out the plate it just shattered into lots of tiny pieces. Make sure your plates are microwave safe. :*)
hi there,
if my microwave is 700 watt,so how many minutes do I have to use?tq..
Worked great! 3 minutes for each ear of corn was sufficient for me.
WOW I cant believe it! I was like, no way this is gonna work for me, lol. I just now put 4 ears in the nuker, 1500 watt as well, for 16 minutes, cut off the end just like you did, squeezed out just like that, no problem, no corn hair and perfectly done. That is amazing! Thank you!
Corn hair 😂😍 that’s adorable
Thanks for getting right to it! Geez some people have 10 minute videos on a few minute task!!! 🤯
This is the BEST THING since sliced bread !!! Thank you so much. We'll be enjoying a LOT more corn on the cob now that we don't have to do that tedious job of removing the silks. Shucking was never the prob, it was the silks.
Too bad the corn can be pre-buttered.
"So this is it, huh folks?"
- George Carlin
And you can use that sliced bread to easily butter your corn. Spread a healthy layer of butter on your bread, then place your corn on it and roll away. Buttered corn AND buttered bread. Win/win!🤘👍
Genius technique! Worked like a charm and no corn silk. This is a keeper, thanks!
Tried it today and it works! LOVE corn on the cob but HATED trying to shuck and de-silk (is that a word? anyway...) it...and people who shuck their corn AT the supermarket, well if I hate doing it at home, I sure as heck wasn't going to do it there!. This is perfect, thank you! Now I have time for other things!
Lynn Thomas, I didn't know people were shuking corn at the grocery stores??🤔
Some grocery stores charge by the pound, instead of by the ear or dozen. Some customers believe not only the husks and silk, but also the widest attached stalk “ends” add up to more money they have to spend. (Take it from a daughter-in-law of an elderly miser who has plenty $$ to spend)
I L♥️VE this video!
Been doing this for a number of years now, and it works great.
Thank you for this video ! I made this last night and my husband was trying to figure out how I cooked the 🌽. It came out Perfect ! Not dripping with water as with boiling. And the shucking was amazing ! No strings left what so ever ! How ever I cooked 2 ears of corn for 10 minutes instead of 3 ears for 12 minutes.
Perfect
I found this years ago. I had friends over and they could not understand what I was doing. They were amazed how good it was
Huh
I've been nuking corn for years . . . and then picking off silk til it's damned near cold. This is going to be put to use tonite! Thanks!
I tried this and it really works !
What a great tip!!!! I am no gem in the kitchen and It worked perfect!! No hair perfectly cooked. Thank you!!
I've been doing this for years. I live alone and only fix one ear at a time. 5 minutes, cut off the big end, and squeeze the ear out. works just like he says.
Ours is 1,500 watts, but I think the corn could stand to be a cooked a little less than when we run it for four full minutes. I'd suggest trying an ear somewhere between 4 and 5 minutes and see what you think. You can always adjust the next time as you get used to your particular oven. My guess is that you'll find the sweet spot (sorry for the pun lol) somewhere in that range.
You are correct. It's not a lineal calculation. If one cob takes 4 minutes, 3 cobs don't require 12 minutes. Depending on the wattage if your microwave oven, you’ll eventually figure it out. I’ve been cooking this way for years, but I do soak then in fresh water first, to make steam inside the husk.
All I can say is, "Thank You!" :-) Worked like a charm! My ears husks were a little dry from sitting in the frig fro a couple of days. So I placed a Pyrex dish with a about a half cup of water with them in the microwave... followed your instructions and they came out perfect! ..and NO MORE shucking. YAY! :-)
Thanks for this. I remembered you could do this and had done it many years ago but not recently so I was looking for a video to remind me of the technique and the time. This was perfect without having to watch a 30 minute video telling the entire history of corn. Sometimes those videos are very educational but that wasn't what I was looking for tonight. The only thing I will add is that I recently found out that the silk is actually highly nutritious and it's recommended to find a way to integrate it into your dishes so I'm going to try doing that and not spit out the silk if I get any in my mouth. Or throw it away while I'm shucking it.
You cook the worms too.
@@ayungclas 😂Good to know!😂
If you're looking for extra-nutrition from corn silk of all things, you must be living in a starvation area.
@@deanronson6331 I look for maximum nutrition in all things. It's amazing how many things we Americans throw away that have nutritional value while we drink soda pop and eat highly refined foods with barely any nutrition left in them. Every so often I will Google something out of curiosity like I did the corn silk and find out how healthy it is for our bodies. You can add avocado seeds to a smoothie if you have a high power blender. The peels of most foods are highly nutritious. The seeds of many foods are high in antioxidants etc. Many edible items are excellent for lowering blood pressure, building immunity, and overall health. Why throw away something that can benefit your body? It isn't about starvation it's about health. I'd rather eat healthy foods than pay for doctor's appointments and chemical medicines with side effects.

Yes great! I also recommend soaking if they are not super fresh. I never did the "squeeze" technique until I saw this video. Many thanks!!
I just got a wonderful gift box today of some fresh vegetables and fruits. 3 ears of corn were among these. The shucks look a little dry tonight, but thanks to what you suggested I'm going to try this! I can't wait to eat this fresh ear of corn tonight and another tomorrow and another day after tomorrow 😋. Ohhhhh.....I haven't had fresh corn in such a long time. Thank you.
Enjoy!
I don't know if you're still alive, but this worked so well!!😂😂 . My microwave is small, not an oven, so I warmed them for 15 minutes just to make sure are and omg!! They slid right out, and I smothered them with butter and seasoning 😂😂I ate 3 but wanted 12😂😂😂
Someone told me about this in 1980. I don’t cut it, just peel it. Also I run cold water over it before I microwave it. Keeps it moist. Best corn ever
thank for the tip
I’ve wrapped mine in a wet paper towel prior to nuke
I tried this and it worked awesome! So, I tried it again just to make sure it wasn't a fluke, lol. It still worked awesome! Then I showed the family and friends how to do it.
Awesome! We're having corn on the cob tonight ourselves! :)
Best corn cooking technique around!!
This is a great way of fixing it. We learned about this method about a year ago & have been fixing it that way since. I put paper towels under them though for less mess in the microwave.
As soon as I saw your video, immediately I put some corn in micro. My Jove I actually succeeded. Thank You! Had never heard of this technique.
Wow, I love you! The trouble I had removing all those hairy bits. Now when summer comes and we can gather them Grandma will have super cobs ! Many thanks! 👏
Sorry we didn't get this up sooner! lol But at least you'll have it for next year. We have this incredibly delicious variety up here in BC called "Triple Sweet Jubilee." Almost tastes like it was dipped in sugar. Of course that's what we used in the video. ;-)
I made corn a million of times but removing silk is the most tedious jobs. I tried other microwave options that are similar but they where never fully clear! Glad I watched ur video ima try this next! Last time I was told to cut both ends before microwave and nothing happened and one time I was told to cut the small end and push from thick end smh. I will try your way!
Wow ... Just followed these easy steps and my cobs of corn were cooked to perfection .... no more boiling corn for me
Microwaves vary in wattage. I can see how you might easily over cook your corn using this method. 12 mins seems like a long time to cook ANYTHING in the microwave. Will have to give this a shot. Nice tip!
That's a great point. It may take some trial and error to find the best time for your oven. Ours is a 1,500-watt model, and 4 minutes per ear seems to work great. Others also might like to vary the time if they like their corn more or less well done. Thanks!
It worked!!! Not one silk remained. I used 3 minutes.
I took three corns and I soaked them in water for about 10 minutes then I put them in two plastic bags (maybe because I thought one was going to tear), and I folded them over Loosely and I set the microwave for 90 seconds, then I flip them over set it for another 90 seconds , flip them over again, set it another 90 seconds, then I flipped them one last time, and set it for 90 seconds , total 6 minutes. The bag was inflated from all the steam and I started to smell them around the third time , so I knew they were done , so I took them out , for about 5 minutes, to rest and then I opened them up and I ate them, they were delicious, also I bought this garlic parmesan and basil seasoned butter from Walmart it was delicious.
You just taught this Iowa girl a new trick! Way to go! Corn's in the microwave right now.
I love the cut the end of and squeeze. I cook mine slightly different. I wrap a damp paper towel around mine and microwave for 2 minutes. My microwave may be stronger than the rv one.
I came looking for a corn hack & this looks awesome! I’ll be trying it tonight for our Sunday roast dinner. Thanks so much!! 🤗😎
Why would anyone thumbs down on this? Looks like a great idea. Can't wait to try it!
Because they don't like corn on the cob lol.
I do it all the time; it's the greatest way! Except that the corn is HOT just out of the microwave, so hold the end with a potholder or a wad of paper towels.
@@inkmage4084 😁 I never thought of it that way. Or perhaps they just hate microwaves?
@@kikib48grid lol probably- either way they are lame lame lame
Just did this! My kids said its the best corn they have ever had.
Great video. Short and to the point. Not to mention helpful. As a college student this is heaven for me.. Thank you very much c:
This is a great way to cook and have silk free corn, I just found this and will always use it.
Serotonin boost. Thanks for an amazing short but yet informative video. That RV looks badass too.
SHUCKS..... IT IS AMAIZING.... I love puns... even CORNY...
I have been doing this for a few decades now... it's good to know others enjoy it too...
my aunt told me about this a month ago. best corn on the cob ever. couldnt believe no silk on corn. it only take 4 min per cob.
I love corn in the cob, thanks for showing microwave cooking.
I cook mine the same way except I place the corn husks in a plastic bag and tuck the opening under the husks. It helps to steam the corn to perfection!!
The way i do it is pull back the husk and silk in 3 parts. braid the husks and you had the full cob with a handle to hold onto
I have a 1200 watt oven, and I cook the ears for 2 minutes per ear. Your mileage may vary. I cut the ends off before I put them in the microwave.
The way I like to do mine is place 2 shucked ears on about 3 full size sheets of paper towel and roll them up tightly then run just a little water on the paper towel where the ears are, then lightly squeeze the water from the paper towel to where they are lightly wet and put them in the micro-wave on high for about 3.5 minutes. When done just cut off the corn and put in a bowel with butter, salt, and pepper as needed.
Thanks! Worked perfectly! Love how you kept it short and straight to the point!
your basically cooking in the leaves, very good for flavor and keeps in moisture.
Oh man brotha! U just saved my arse my family is going away tomorrow morning so I was to cook dinner while they pack. No biggie I made sausage jambalaya n roasting ears. However I forgot to start the corn earlier, so I needed a short cut. Thank you!!
Since u are looking at this in real time I wanna let u know that corn turned out great. Thank u again
That’s awesome, Scott! Thanks for letting us know. Great to hear!
I reheat mine in the mircowave if I make them I put them in bags and then snack on them later cause I usually buy a dozen at a time....my kids liked them that way too...corn and potatoes
WOW!!!!! awesome trick. I hate the silk hair. It grosses me out lol Oooh now I can make lots of corn this way lol
Oh, no three 0:18 years ago. I just learned this. Works great. Thanks😊
I have two ears of corn here.
Now I know exactly how to deal with them! (Thanks!)
With the addition of too much butter, and nearly too much salt, they should be just delightful!
They should go very well with my "Steak House Seasoned" hamburger!
Add some well made Sweet Iced Tea, and you've got dietary bliss!
What a great idea. I've got a lot of corn in the freezer from my garden. Gonna try it. Thanks.
i have done this before and this trick works great it really does work
Quicker than shucking and boiling. Also tastes crispier and more flavorful. I pop mine into the microwave for 4 minutes each.
Cook for only 3 minutes if you plan on freezing them for later use. I froze 2 ears yesterday, cook at 4 minutes and the other cooked at 3 minutes. The one I cook that four minutes and thawed out later in the microwave was mushy slightly whereas the one I only cook at 3 minutes and thought out later in the microwave was still crunchy regardless!
Thanks for the tip... might need to start stocking our freezer up with corn for the winter! 😉
@@RVgeeks I sure hope you can find it for cheaper than .50 per ear. I live in a very small town and there's only one supermarket. If I drive to the Walmart 23 miles away, it's .40 per ear. Oh how times have changed! I used to be able to get it for .10 per ear LOL. I'll try again to grow it myself next spring. Didn't have much luck this year
Easiest way to do it! I’ve been doing this for years!
That looks awesome! I'm going to do that right now. Thanks for the tutorial!
Best way to cook corn. fantastic
Thank you RVgeeks; answered my question about this. First video I tried and I do not need another. Happy trails!
I seen this technique a long time ago and have been using it for quite a long time. It works great. A little salt, garlic powder and some fresh parmesan cheese will finish it off nicely.
Can't wait for fresh corn this summer!
This is crazy. Gonna start cooking COTC this way for my impatient bbq guests
Nothing new, been doing this for years. Very good
This is the way to do corn. I use a plain old oven if not on the grill. It works well in the microwave too. I’ve been using this method for over 30 years. It retains nutrients. Shucking, cleaning, cutting, boiling is such a hassle with loss of nutrients. The stuff from the grocery store seems to have no flavor. The Farmer’s market is the way to with most veggies.
This was surprisingly good!! Thanks for the tip 🌽
I have to try this! Looks perfect.
I just made mine without having this idea i was so hungry I put 2 for 10 minuets it test so gooood than I mixed it in my salad
I have done this many times and I don't like the smell, What causes that smell ? I do believe it is the best way though.
this has changed my life
girlygamer 101 Hopefully for the better! :)
Awesome. Radioactive corn. No mess. Just radioactive corn. Yum.
You can't use this technique, Craig, since I assume you don't own a microwave. ;-)
Oh! Man, well this time I was Cooking Corn on the cob, The Hard way. Geeeesh !
Tried it, loved it! Thanks for posting.
PS: loved the corn-scavation (excavation of corn). Try it raw, really sweet
The king of nuking corn on UA-cam. Thank you for the explanation!
Always cook corn in microwave comes out great but I remove most of husk leave a couple of layers of husk
This works like a miracle. Did it tonight.
where to cut? just when the end of the corn is not curving. this allows the right size opening for the corn to be gently squeezed through and put!.
No Shucking!
Awesome tip!
One thing I would add to this is to use a cutting board so that you don’t damage your countertops.
I've done it many times but forgot so I thought I'd do a search... I don't remember cooking it that long though, if anyone has a problem.
That system really works thank you.
Get ALL of the corn by cutting as shown in the video (about 2-3 rows above the end of the cob) except only cut deep enough to get through the shuck. This gives you a "handle" on the large end of the cob. Pull the shuck/silks off then take a knife and cut the remaining shuck off, cutting all the way through the end of the cob.
RVgeeks -- I was aware of this technique -- you guys do great videos . --- Jim
Thanks Jim! This one was out of our usual subject matter, but it was done on board an RV!
I do this all the time. It’s not new to me.
You should ask my old pal Albert Patterson. He’s the one who told me how to do it lol
We do this ALL THE TIME and it is a great way to make corn. My wife however doesn't like me cutting the end off because she wants to eat that last row...lol Did you know that you can also cook artichoke in the microwave?! The time for one med/large artichoke is 7 minutes 10 minutes for two. What you do is rinse it off like normal, I cut the very top off of the artichoke. I add a slice of butter on top and then wrap the artichoke in wet paper towels, place in a microwave safe bowl, and then cover that bowl with saran wrap to seal the top. You can enjoy artichoke in 10 minutes rather than 45 minutes on the stove. You may have to add 30 seconds is you have really large artichokes. I will not go back to cooking them on the stove! Try it and see how you like it!
This worked fantastically!!
thanks i just started living in a camper and i love it.
That’s great, Mary! So glad to hear you’re enjoying it!!
The timing math sounds right but I'm sure eight minutes should be enough.
They are cooking in a RV, and their microwave may be a lower powered one. For an 1100 watt microwave, I to believe that eight minutes would be enough.
I only do 5 minutes 😂
3.5 minutes for 2 large ears works for me. A little longer if you are not in a rush is good.
On the upside, it's just coming into summer in Australia, and we love corn on the cob as well. :-) I'll be trying this out as soon as the new season corn hits the shops.
Will do it this way from now on. Thanks
All right, it's show time. I've got my corn and I'm trying this.
We are doing this for our Memorial Day picnic this afternoon. I watched a lot of videos on this topic and most of them do not give a time that works. I'm going to try the 4 minutes per ear you suggested. We like to eat it with just butter and freshly squeezed lime juice. Thanks RVgeeks.
WiddoMouse Never heard of using lime juice, but that sounds really interesting. Have to give that a try. :) Enjoy you picnic! Hope the 4 minutes cooks it the way you like it. Works for us.
Good day, RV Geeks.
This is a great idea that I'm anxious to try. What is the wattage on your microwave so I can make time adjustments on my 900 watter? Thanks!
I think I will continue to shuck my corn and just microwave one ear for myself for a couple of minutes. What if there is a worm inside as can happen with corn from the field! When I do a lot, I just bring to a boil and boil only five min.
There isn't much to say about this video that hasn't already been said, but there is clearly 'silk' still on the cob. although I've been working with food for many years and the only sure way I've come across to completely remove the silk and keep the cob intact involves a lot of time and a good pair of tweezers.
The corn comes out with less silk than any other way we've tried. Sometimes there are a few strands left, but they come off easily. No tweezers needed!
Wow! 😮
