Growing up on Oahu, this place was one of our regular stops for saimin and BBQ sticks throughout my younger years. They used to be open until 2am so it also was a favorite late night stop after a night of being out on the town with my buddies. I now live on the Big Island and often will go to Palace Saimin when the craving hits. My son and I were in Honolulu earlier this year and were hanging so we figured it was a saimin night. It was either The Saimin House (across the street from Palace) or Palace. Since Saimin House was closed, Palace was the winner. We both had the X-large saimin and a total of 15 BBQ sticks…so filling and ono! You should also try The Saimin House across the street from Palace. They used to be located almost next to Tamashiro Market in the 60s/70s…another great place to enjoy great noodles, dashi and BBQ sticks plus they also have macaroni salad to go with the saimin. Kalihi used to have many great, cheap places to enjoy home style foods. Now, the old mom and pop places are slowly disappearing since the children prefer not to take over the business despite the business being the reason they were able to attend college and earn degrees for higher paying jobs. These businesses are slowly becoming a memory of the past.
I love when Camille does videos with you! She seems like such a fun friend everything did look delicious and I also try to go to family places.... Now I want a lemon cupcake 🤭
Been eating there since I was a kid! My favorite saimin. It’s nostalgic and it actually brings back many memories eating there w my mom and brother and since my mom didn’t drive. We would walk back home. I never had trouble sleeping.
I was raised in Kalihi and Kalihi has the best saimin and okazu-ya spots on the island. Back in the 70’s and 80’s, Kalihi was a much different neighborhood but I miss the good ‘ole days of Kalihi ❤ #goGovs 🤙🏼
Haven't been here in years, grew up near by. Saimin w/ BBQ stick was the go-to. Probably the last place that had the old, old soda machines where you open the glass door, grab the glass soda bottle by the neck, and pull out the bottle... fun times.
I went to Farrington High School just a minute away. I used to go there with my friends to eat. Memories....since then I've lived all over the U.S. in California mainly. But when I back home, I go to eat at some of my favorite places I used to eat and hangout as a kid. Sadly, some of those places are no longer there.
I was in Oahu in May and I wish I had seen this video. My buddy and I were looking for a good saimin noodle place. I guess I need to plan another trip. Actually, I want to move to Oahu in two to three years. I'll subscribe to your channel to learn more about the in/out of moving to Oahu. Mahalo!
Your video popped up on my feed. Great and casual food review so you earned my sub. Haven’t been to Palace Saimin for years, now I will need to make it there soon. You also should check out Helena Hawaiian food. It’s the best Hawaiian food on the island. Also Ethel’s for a local Japanese hole in the wall.
Hello! Thanks for the subscribe! Loved Helenas when I went there! I've heard good things about Ethel's, but have yet to go. I want to do a video highlighting Hawaiian food soon. My friend wants to do a video of the Waiahole Poi Factory. We'll see!
@@JoannaHopeLai can’t wait to see your vlog on Ethel’s Grill. Their tataki sashimi is so heavenly yummy. I think the restaurant is not open yet but only take out. Best to call first.
Helena's is Da Bes! our favorite spot for Hawaiian food! You should also check out Broke Da Mouth (Filipino Hawaiian Fusion) and Sushi Bay, both are in Kapolei. :)
I'm always there when I'm running around Town! The Broth or Dashi is still the same never ever change! Still the Bestest Hole in the Wall in Kalihi Town! Was raise up from Small Kid Time! Thanks to Mama San that her Daughter Susan took over! And it it reasonable Price for Your $! Onolicious that nobody can top this Place! Much Mahalos Susan! Palace Saimin is #1 in My Book Yesa!!!

just subscribed after watching a lot of your food/cooking content .. didn't realize you are a ex-SV person ... I am too, but I put in around 30 years before I hung up my PM/Engineer/Babysitter Job at the age of 57 .. (I too was on Shoreline Ave in Mtn View). hope to read more your stuff (cooking , work experiences, etc .. ) BTW ... luv your Momma Lai ..
Maybe coz was raised in/around Oahu NS, much rather prefer Shige's Saimin over Palace. Also, checkout Shiro's Saimin Haven/Waimalu SC, across of Best Buy. Recommend Do Don Pa
Thanks for sharing, but I rather not bother or take out only at this restaurant. it's too much work. I appreciate my local restaurant here in San Diego ca.😂🙃👍
Going up in Hawaii you come home from school back in the day you grab a bowl of siamin and watch checkers and pogo.
💛💛💛
Next time you're in Wahiawa, try Shiges Saimin. Theirs is good too.

Hi Craig. Thanks for sharing these memories. I enjoy going to mom & pop places. They work so hard, and it's good to support a family. 👍

Her friends vibe is cool.
I first went to Palace Saimin with relatives back in 1965 when I was 7, it is like i remember that occasion almost vividly !

Ah, old soda machines! I wonder if there's any places with those left. Would be fun to go to...
I would love to see more videos of locals' favorite places and entrepreneurs. Thank you!
Stay tuned for more 🤓

Love your videos! You guys should try Lam’s Kitchen in Chinatown. Some of the best noodles that I’ve ever had. So silky and delicious!
Hi Carmen! I ate at Lam’s today! Gotta love their beef noodle soup! 👍🏽
Crazy that Palace Saimin is still around. Haven’t had a Saimin in 5 years or so.
"They didn't hold back on the carcinogens" 🤣🤣🤣 I love a crispy BBQ stick.
Right! And I do prefer my toast almost burnt, too! 😂
Haven’t been to Palace Saimin for sooo long. Must go back.
👍
This is awesome! Keep up the great work!
Thank you, Ari! I appreciate your encouragement.
Shoutout to Kalihi! Going to try this spot

Merry Christmas to you ❤
Merry Christmas, Loretta!
Haha glad to see you checked the place out!
Thanks again for the rec, Josh!
I grew up eating Sekiya’s saimin and barbecue stick. It’s close to Kaimuki. Try going there to eat Saimin!
Bay Area represent :)
Kauai - Chickens everywhere
Bay Area! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
That's old school saimin. You gotta dip the wonton in the mustard. I miss that place.
👍
Awesome video, Joanna!
Thank you, Vicky! Hope you're doing well. 💛

You got this nice hawaiian tan compared to Camille. You definitely got that hawaiian glow now.
Thanks. I tan very easily
Would Mama Lai like it?
Need to chill out and not be so hyper. Your video is great besides that.
You’re kidding when you said you didn’t know what hot mustard was right? Come on girl! You’re Chinese.
Aiyah
When Japan invaded Hawaii this was their go to restaurant
What?! Palace Saimin didn’t exist in 1941.
hahaha!
I find it hard to believe that you are a content marketer?
