Boy, you hit the nail on the head about purchasing and just not using it. I'm into mix media, and sometimes I get carried away purchasing. Thank you. And lovely mermaid. .
Excellent advice to let something sit and look at it later with fresh eyes. I was struggling through one of your older tutorials (the baby fox) and instead of bulldozing onward, I waited until the next day and was able to rescue it. (I like to draw my own from the reference photo and keep you in the background "talking" me through the process). You are one of my favorite artists that I follow because you are so encouraging.
Inktober is about challenging oneself. There aren't any set "rules." He created the challenge in the first place so that artists could challenge themselves to draw every single day. Even the prompt list is just a guideline and an option. If you want to sketch with a pencil first you can. If you want to use coloured inks you can. If you only want to use black inks you can. If you want to do three different drawings for one prompt guess what, you can. You don't need anyone's "permission" to do something with your own individual challenge. The idea is to continue to practice and improve. I love this mermaid. She turned out lovely. x
Thank you for sharing and being honest about the struggles with your art, i always am in awe of others talent and wonder if they ever have things that they want to get better at, and its refreshing to hear you talk about the area's that you want to improve on. I thoroughly enjoyed this and all your videos. Thank you :)
The mermaid is BEAUTIFUL! Love the water, so realistic and fun! On a side note, I have never had a problem with the signo white gel pen, I love them. Used to use others and always had issues! Love this Inktober, hopefully there will be a inkovember!? TFS
Awesome mermaid Lindsay ! I've also been participating in inktober and I'm finding it to be a lot of fun and a good way to improve my drawing skills. I'll look forward to your next sketch tomorrow. 💞💫
I am loving your inktober work. I got myself some India Ink and brush today because I wanted to explore liquid ink instead of just liner pens. I am going to be using it a lot this month.
Love your inktober videos... Inspires me to also work with less imperfection because it can be sooo beautiful. Love your artwork. Greetings from germany
I’m recently new to your work, and I’d like to tell you that you’re a very pleasant woman to watch and listen to !!! Thank you for sharing , Suz Brighton
I loved this video! I do have to say, as someone who mostly draws without reference photos, that using them isn’t really a crutch, more like a useful tool! Though I know you didn’t mean it in a negative way. :)
RE: Signo gel pens. A lot of people use them too soon - if using over acrylic paints or inks, you have to wait 48h for the paint to fully cure (not just dry, cure) or it will ruin the pen and make it appear to not really work properly. Same over dye or inks that are waterbased - 24h otherwise they will bleed into the white and make it look awful. The main single reason people think their white gel pen is bad though is usually using over acrylic inks or paints too soon. Licking your finger and rubbing the ball can sometimes rescue it but not always.
I don't own any acrylic paints or inks, as I was a stamper until I got the watercolor bug. I only used distress inks and other dye ink stamping pads and still my pens would work 1 or 2 times and then quit working. I stored them horizontally, but the only thing I could think of that could be the issue is that I didn't constantly use them. It might be 2 months after my 2nd use before I used it again. I suspect that is the issue for me. Any thoughts?
Robin Cooper Distress Ink never dries properly and any moisture will lift it up - and it lifts into the nib of your pen, which should not in itself cause huge issues but it will discolour your white ink. It should not block the pen but other dye inks may do..
Robin Cooper Not using them for 2 months does tend to kill them. Did you try rubbing them on a wet fingertip (spit seems to work best!) for a few bins to reawaken them at all? As Mrs W said in the video, long gaps ain’t good for them.
Robin Cooper PS: it just came to me that someone told me years ago to draw on the sole of a (rubber sole) shoe if they stop working and it gets the flow back again. I’ve now stopped using white gel pens as I discovered the Dylusions white acrylic paint pen - works over everything and not a ball-point so v v hard to block - lasts ages too: amzn.to/2xUUKo1 - I got mine when they first came out 18 months ago and use it v often - still going strong!
No, I did not use a wet fingertip. I'd only heard a warm fingertip. I'll have to give the "spit wash" a try. I did hear Lindsay say " use them or loose them." That's the first time I'd ever heard that. Thank you for your tips Spin Doctor.
You have amazing confidence in all your projects. It's really just sheer fun to watch, and with your narrative - always a treat! Thank you! :)
I really love mermaids and I absolutely love how this drawing/coloring page turned out! TFS!
What a joy to see you doing your magic starting with a blank piece of water color paper.
Beautiful colours Lindsay. Loving this series.

That’s beautiful. I too had to have a tiny bit of help today so I did a selfie of me screwing my eyes up and holding my nose, such fun and it worked 💜
My kind of ink picture of art! 😍
GORGEOUS. I loved watching this process video. I'm in love with watercolors but I suck at them still haha

Love your mermaids. I sent you an email with a mermaid booklet that you might enjoy for future art
It looks like your mermaid is a girl getting swallowed by an eel fish thing. Turn it sideways :) very apropos for Halloween.
