I still play standard rumbles with 8 people. We love it.

I've played standard like 20 years ago. A few weeks ago I've picked up playing MTG again. I've built a new standard deck (red burn deck with a bit of artifacts) and enjoyed right away. Now my GF an I've tried Commander for like two or three runs, but we did not like it that much. It's okay, but the focus on your commander as an "identity" to your deck and the slow speed in de game annoying. In out region the players only play conmander, so we will also stick a bit with that, but in general I prefer classic MGT formats.

The only thing killing magic is hasbro's business practices.

I was actually introduced to magic via commander. I had no idea what was happening in the games. I gave up on trying. My plan was to net-deck a few instant win combos and just ignore the rest of the table. It was hard because all the actual good cards were super expensive. One day I played arena and I realized that I understood the game state. Turns out seeing the same cards multiple times helps you learn what it does. Seems silly but that was huge for my enjoyment of the game. I have 0 desire to ever play commander again after seeing what a 60 card game was like and only do it socially.
It shocks people, but what really won me over to 60 card formats was deck variety. Its not that you see more of the same cards in 60 card than commander, but every commander deck felt like it did the same thing. Every commander deck I've ever seen win a game was a ramp-combo deck. Seeing aggro, tempo, control and midrange all as options was crazy too me.
I think its a mistake to think of commander as just another magic format. Commander is just a different game that uses the same cards, in the same way that rummy and poker use the same cards. If commander fails, commander players are more likely to come up with another commander-like format than they are to play a 60 card game.
I made a cube actually two. Unfortunately I cannot really convince anyone to play it since its not a cube for commander. So I've basically just become an arena player since I have trouble justifying $500 for a non-proxy deck for events.

Imagine not wanting to go to a tournament and competing. Commander is honestly not fun for me.

I know an even cheaper format....
      PACK WAR!!!
basically 1 pack + 5 of each basic land.

What I absolutely hate about commander is it's high randomness, which to me makes it feel much more of a game of luck and P2W, enticing people to spend stupid ammounts on their decks. Sure it's fun once in a while, but being by far the most popular format and killing the other ones really makes me hate it. The 60 cards format feels much more like a game of skill rather than luck.

Because 60 card formats can’t be pay to win and it certainly doesn’t encourage people to go get an additional 3 complies of that $50 card to add to their deck. I’ve spend less money on my 4 commander decks than my buddy spent on half of his standard deck so please don’t act like the price is a commander specific problem. It can apply to pretty much each format except pauper.

I got into magic playing kitchen table magic then commander right after that. The powercreep is real and very apparent so I only have few good decks while the rest are casual jank that don't care about the power creep. As much as I love commander I have hard time getting into other formats eventhough I more than likely have the cards to play them if I want to except for legacy and vintage obviously. When it gets to the point that I genuinely quit playing magic, I don't know what I would do. I play it for commander specifically and the fun experiences I have playing with 3 or more players.
Unlike many players I still play kitchen table magic sometimes and it reminds me of the basic aspects of 60 card formats so I wouldn't be lost playing them. Getting extra copies of expensive staples will suck but that will be the only thing I will hate about not playing commander. You need 3 or more actually copies of good cards like sheodred and the fetch and shocklands etc.

1v1 60 is Fundamentally Magic - anything else is a derivative or variant.

Some may agree or may not agree. But i used to only play standard. I started to play brawl on arena and its soo much more enjoyable for a couple reasons. Namely the biggest reason for me. Arenas shuffler is broken, i got tired of drawing multiple copies of the same card, repeatedly. This doesn't really happen in real life. The other reason, brawl has more diverse options to play as far as card pool and players to play against.
    my 2 cents

Playing standard is so f-ing expensive with the speed new sets are coming out!

I've found that people who are strictly commander and are stuck in the singleton format is introducing them to pauper. Especially if you all just spend 3 hours digging through bulk commons building a pauper deck together. Yoy end up spending about 15 to 20 bucks as long as you don't go play against the high powered pauper tournaments. That's how I got my group into 60 card formats!

I played 60 card formats for 20+ years. I don't plan on touching them again. Not shelling out 1.5-2k for a deck in modern and certainly not going back to the clusterfuck of standard. Hasbro doesn't give a damn about the game; just the product.

... i cant stand commander... im sorry... Standard is the best platform and easiest to meet someone random at a card store or a park and sit down and play with.

I don't care how fun you think standard is. Recommending people invest in that money sinkhole is really foul homie. You could play Modern or Pioneer for around the same amount of money.

    • @geeknseek
      @geeknseek  5 місяців тому

Obviously it varies, but the average standard deck is 1/4 the cost of a modern deck. Pioneer might be closer

This is depressing, I got into magic like a year ago just playing arena. Then I finally got the urge to get cards, I bought hella boxes and accessories to build my deck, and yet I can’t play with it. Majority of my LGS’s only play commander, but my deck is for standard/modern. I might just give up on magic since this game caters to a format I’d rather not play at all. I genuinely do not like commander

The option to play digitally exists, but I hope more opportunities can arise for you to easily play other formats in paper. Commander isn't for everyone and Wizards should be capitalizing on the diversity of other formats. Best wishes

Update! I completely quit playing magic the gathering and jumped into playing Flesh and Blood. Honestly I am enjoying flesh and blood soooooo much more than I was magic and I don’t think I’ll ever comeback to playing MTG again. Wizards have completely destroyed the 60 card formats in favor of commander, the collabs in secret lair suck, and overall this game has changed with no signs in the near future of changing things within it to make it better.
I can play flesh and blood more at my LGS’s and they have Talishar for digital play AND ITS COMPLETELY FREE!
