    • @dnahubs
      @dnahubs 5 років тому +62

I don't think that's entirely true. I *think* that she probably wants to have options. She's happy and comfortable in her boyish style, but there must be days when she'd like to look and feel more feminine. After all, looking at her hobbies and skills, outside of her looks she's actually quite lady like.
I don't think it's a big deal to accept advice or help in styling. After all if she really doesn't like it, she can just change back after she leaves. But if she does then she's probably happy to know that there actually are more feminine styles that are suitable for her. And that she doesn't need to pile on makeup to look more womanly.
I really liked the way she was styled because it wasn't overly girly or anything. It was still in keeping with her comfort zone just a little upgraded is all.

Exactly. It's not a problem that people see each other as man or woman. That's just a biological fact of nature. She dressed like a guy so it can't bother her that much. This world today is so selfish thinking that *everyone* has to be accepting of every single decision an individual makes. It doesn't work that way. It's just a sign of how absolutely narcissistic people have become.

However, those norms changed slowly, but it started due to "one person" because no one is that unique that others don't share a similar problem. This woman isn't the only woman in Korea like this. Setiously. I saw a documentary about a condition similar to this, where a woman who had been already gone through puberty and was considered pretty by society's standards (she even worked as a model) started growing again. Her appearance totally changed, and she was often mistaken as a man. It took doctors years to eventually realize she had a giant tumor on her pituitary gland, which had been causing her hormones to go crazy. Honestly it makes me sad that they did not discuss this more, because people should already not judge others, but they especially should not judge someone for dealing with medical problems. I imagine that it was a hard surgery this woman had to go through in order to fix her problem, since the pituitary gland is in or near the brain (I haven't taken anatomy, so Idk where exactly). I have to respect her for being able to ignore strangers' opinions in a society that is very critical of each other's looks.

Her looks have nothing to do with you. Some people with conditions that make their face appear different also get a lot of comments on it and then suddenly when those judgy people know it’s caused by a condition they’re all sorry but even if they don’t have a condition that makes them look different, what difference does it make? I really do hope that she, herself actually enjoys the new style given to her. I admire that she wants to "change" for her children, I just hope that she's not sacrificing too much of her own style and identity just for them. Personally, I'm often suspected to be a lesbian because of my manly style and personality. I try not to think much of what others people think, and I really hate wearing makeup and skirts, or clothes that shows too much skin, etc. and I hate it when others force me to :( ...My boyfriend (and ex) liked me despite my tomboyish nature but I hate it when they try to make me act and dress more feminine and always saying "I know you're beautiful, I just want to make you more beautiful." :( *sigh~ I know that it's supposed to be a compliment but I part of me feels sad, thinking that I'm not fully accepted as my true self :c

lmfao just from watching all these variety show clips, you quickly realize how "image" is so incredibly important to koreans. korea is also a very judgemental society. like if you wanna be "perfect" you're gonna be self-concious of like EVERYTHING. like that's why when idols get into dating scandals, it often reflects badly. because they go from the "ideal romantic partner" to "yikes taken". it's quite toxic. that's why their sasaeng fans are so much more problematic than other countries imo.

@@pandaonsteroids5154 perceptions of the norm of what masculinity or femininity looks like is depending on what people have been conditioned as the norm / baseline. In South korea, the standard woman looks a lot more feminine (in the traditional sense of looking very soft features, shapely, skirts, dresses, makeup, long hair etc) than how this woman looks like. In my country, it's not so extreme. I could easily tell she's a woman that simply does not look super feminine, but still a recognisably woman (i wouldn't think she's a man - there are a lot of aspects to her that are still v uniquely womanly...like her voice, the look in her eyes, her aura, and her facial features are still softer than a man's). But i wasn't surprised that many thought she was a man in South Korea, just because they don't see too many women that look like her.

Watching this show gives me so much physical stress because the people on it experience such real societal issues and the hosts largely just make fun of them and its getting really stressful and feels very much like a show trying to tell people to just 'be normal' or 'do what society wants' rather than be accepted for who they are. For a show called hello counselor the hosts sure don't know any basics on how to make a person feel cared about or understood and the whole show just feels like a testament to how dismissive and judgemental kr society really is. I shouldn't have to feel like I want to throw up from the prredjudice on what's supposed to be regular daytime TV there's something so wrong about this

Well, that's Korea. Everyone tries hard to blend in and not bother their relatives with their differences. Also, this show is for entertainment, it may look "educational" sometimes but it's really not. This show is not supposed to make the audience/viewers feel uncomfortable or guilty. It's supposed to make them laugh and entertain them. It's not a serious show, otherwise it wouldn't be that popular. The goal is not change society but to give a quick (easy) solution to the person who has a concern, a solution that makes everyone confortable, which is why they never advised someone to step out of a relationship or see a therapist.

They encouraged the mother to stop caring about what others say so she can be strong for her little girl making her grow up with a non judgements family even if she can’t protect her from the outside
They weren’t rude or trying to normalize anyone at all, they were actually really respectful! See? They may seem like that but they aren’t. This is just adressing the problem. But I totally agree in this episode they didn’t do much to help the woman at all

You can't really get mad at that because you didn't make the show and have no control over what happens. Also, people send in their concerns knowing the nature of the show. If they wanted something more serious, they should go to counseling. This show also puts the guests out there. Like the woman who wears a Hijab or the girl with one blue eye. Then, others can notice them. It's all in the name of entertainment and business.

I think I might be in the minority with my comment but here goes:
I thought she was transgender when she first took off the mask. Square jaw and wide nose are common male features and I can completely understand why people, at first glance, would see in a masculine light. After getting used to her for 30 minutes, I was able to see the more feminine features and get used to her as "woman". As was evident by the attention she gets, no one is saying she's ugly she just has traditionally masculine features, and so, she is regarded as masculine by the snap judgments the human brain makes. Her concern is not an easily solvable one - they cannot fix society though they try very very hard by calling out Koreans on being loud and making hurtful comments and judging so harshly. HOWEVER, they can do their best to help the person with the concern and if that includes a makeover they will do it. They didn't throw her in a long wig and pink dress. They tried to work with her own unique style and look and comfort level so she can show off her natural femininity and she looked good. I think she can take the tips that style provides and incorporate it into her own everyday look.

    • @12345jli

I completely agree re: the makeover being good. Everyone is saying that "why didn't the show focus on Korean society needing to change??" -- I agree that they could have focused on it a bit more, but her concern has two aspects: one is the societal issue that even gives rise to these types of inconveniences and perceptions in the first place-- and the second is more short term and immediate: the fact that her daughter feels ashamed, the fact that she gets weird looks everywhere she goes. It's such a long term thing to change people's perspectives-- even if Hello Counselor did focus more on the fact that Korean society is very unforgiving regarding genders and appearances... would that help her? Maybe in years and years to come, gradually, but sometimes, people also need help getting by day to day. And sometimes, compromising isn't too bad of an idea if you want that quick fix to help. c:
And you know what, when people see a more masculine face like that whose face and style is a mix between conventional gender standards, like her fashion at the end, that also might help change perceptions. Get people more used to faces like hers. In the end-- the choice is up to her. The show is giving a slight platform for her concern to get into the public sphere and spark discussion, and they're also giving her a tool and an idea in case she wants something more immediate.

@Neha Dongol ok but if she walked in to the female restroom, I would scream too. It's not that I'm trying to judge her for how she lives her life or her looks but it's that I'm a girl seeing a guy walk into a very vulnerable place for females! As long as she is part of this society, she has to accept that she will keep getting reactions like that. No one is forcing her to change but she can't force everyone to bend to what is comfortable to her either.

What I notice, when people come to this show with the concerns like this (having feminine voice, masculine personality or different physical appearance) the show's cast impose them to fall into the fixed frames of the homogeneous society.
Dear Korean People! Please travel; meet people who have different hair, skin, language, culture, looks, voice or whatever the heck you are not used to. You gotta be open to the differences.
It's highly essential to be open to others, accepting them as they're, because they have equal rights to be happy.

    • @GermAntibody
      @GermAntibody 5 років тому +18

The advice is what they want. It's not about accepting things they could change. They come here WANTING to make changes. Everyone was kind to her, but she clearly is attempting to find a way to look more feminine, so it's judging of HER that you're doing, not korean society. Don't judge her for coming here wanting to figure out a way to become more feminine. Just support her decisions. They're saying the hard things she came here to hear, but they're still being super kind to her while doing it and showing they like her for who she is. Koreans want to be the best they can be so they take criticism better than most people do, especially when they want to be the way the advice will help them be. Being unique is great if it's what you want, but the more unique you are the farther you fall out of the center of society. Don't judge someone for wanting to be closer to center again, even if it's not what you would do.

I don’t think this a matter of being accepted as she is but realizing that it’s okay to embrace your femininity, to wear skirts, and be a girly girl. I think it’s innate in most girls.
Although I have nothing against girls who like to look manly, it is inevitable that people will get confused, whether you like it or not. But at the end of the day, that shouldn’t matter right? Idk. It’s something to think about

It sucks that society can't just accept her as she is without causing a fuss, but that's the reality of the situation. Society, especially in Korea, puts a huge emphasis on looks. Hyperpituitarism can cause traditionally manly features, and is probably also the reason why she is so tall. It's not her fault, but you can't go around explaining to every person you meet that you're a female. I think it is a concern if it's affecting her daughters to the point they're embarrassed to be seen with her. That is damaging to your family structure.

When comforting others you shouldnt focus on yourself but just listen to them. They are comparing their situations which are far from hers. Its not the way to comfort someone. This show sometimes is irritating. They contradict what they say and think that showing pity or saying words is enough. You can see that the woman and the husband are trying to say something more and looks so uncomfortable by their jokes but they let them, they are now used by it which is sad because they shouldnt suffer something like that and get used to it. Even Mina feels uncomfortable.

Her family are so sweet! That makeover is EVERYTHING! She looks so bright and cheerful like that even the way she walked was different. She should try to keep the same style it really suits her! It wasn't much but it made such a big difference! Her family saying it's awkward because they have never seen her like this but she looked amazing

honestly the mom could wear prettier makeup and more stylish clothing but she's old fashioned. girls who are taller have to style themselves a certain way. this is not just her problem all tall girls have this issue and have to find ways to look more feminine. but her kids can't even pay one single compliment without giving backhanded compliments like "even if you're not pretty." looks aren't everything. if i went through 18 months of labor just to stretch out my vagina to have those two as my kids i would be furious

I was very upset by her daughters’ reactions to the mini makeover. I thought she looked very nice. They styled her in a way that I saw as both masculine and feminine. If her goal was look more feminine for events that involved her daughters and husband’s friends, I think the style they gave her is a comfortable middle ground. For everyone saying she is fine with herself and they didn’t listen to her, I think they did because she said she wants to be more feminine for certain occasions and they gave her that option. On a regular basis, she can just do what she wants with her appearance.

Can't agree more. The stereotypical standard of beauty is way too narrow in so many communities. It is true that it's human nature to judge and to ostracize people who are different from the majority, still, wouldn't diversity be beautiful as well. Also, people keep saying that pink is the color for girls whereas blue is for boys. But that is just the strategy companies used to market their way out. Always stay doubtful and critical about what others tell you. And who can predict the trend and beauty standard 300 years from now? Be open.

Oh my, her kids are so rude and disrespectful, I honestly can't understand people who are ashamed of their parents, they are great as they are, you are the ones who should accept them as they are in this life yet you dare be this uneducated, even if your classmates are wrong, you should correct them and say that your mother is the best as she is and as she wanna be, just let her do what she wants, its so frustrating to see things like this ugh, I'm so mad.
It is really reminding me of my sister who's ashamed of our mother, I truly can't understand this behavior, I am so proud of my family like I am the happiest when they are with me, I'm like "my mom and dad are the best, I love them so much!"
And I never cared about what others might think about me or anyone else, I am who I am I accept myself and I don't need your opinion to do so, just love yourself man.

Agree! They should have protected her. I was slightly hoping this show could make them realizes their mistake and apologize her for hurting her feelings too. She even mentioned that the poem was funny yet sad. I'm depressed as I see the mother's reaction. But in the end, the mother managed to gain confidence. Her transformation at the end suits with her tho. Most people sees her as outgoing person and have leadership personality and that style screams it well. Let's love our mom's who loves us unconditionally. We should do the same thing to our moms.

I understand where the daughters are coming from in the terms on being embarrassed but, I don't like how they keep on telling her to dress and such. Like my mom has short hair and I've only seen her wear a skirt maybe 2 or 3 times in my life but, I've never pressured her to dress up more or have longer hair. The only time and my sister have said anything about her hair being longer is that she looks pretty with long hair too. I just don't understand how they could be hurting their mom's feelings and not understand that?

I like this episode for coming up with such a superb solution!!! It's actually problematic for her to feel sorry towards her family for looking "un-feminine" although everyone in the family is so harmonious. I'm also sure her daughters only want to prevent classmates from making fun of their mother... They do love their mother a lot, which is obvious to the mother as well. This is a great episode with no harsh feelings. It is only the society that requires a wake-up call.
