My parents didn't allow me to do anything accept learn or read (only books), I was raised in one of those perfectionist households when they beat you if you read a comic book. So now being almost 30 yo, I'm starting playing Magic The Gathering and hopefully trying LARP and RPG soon. I feel so uncomfortable and old entering to the environment consisting of mostly younger people and kids, but hey, I've heard there's never to late to learn :) Cheers to all late-bloomers ;)

Every year I wear my big stompy boots to m'era luna, and end up getting overheated. This year I'd decided I wasn't hoing to make that mistake again, and wore my pikes instead. The mud came up over my boottops and one of the soles started peeling off. They're done for.

My nephews played Magic; The Gathering (MTG) when it first came out and I thought it looked so interesting, having played D&D in my younger days. But I never learned until this past January. So now, at age 54, every Friday night I am off to the gaming store, husband in tow (he reads in the corner on the sofa), and I love it! I play a G/B delirium for Standard, Meren and now a new pumped up Feline Ferocity deck for EDH (Commander) and have been in a few sealed events too. MTG is actually quite complex now, and expensive if you want a competitive deck, even if you play casual. I love watching the tournaments on Twitch. I am lucky that we have several gaming stores nearby and living an hour away from Salem, no worries about anyone freaking out about demons and monsters. lol Just the normal, everyday stuff around here! Definitely keep us informed as to how it goes for you! Try to get into Commander and buy a pre-con deck. A bunch of new ones just came out. Wizards, Dragons, Cats, Vampires. And next weekend (September 23rd) is the new release of Ixalan, which is dinos, vampires, merfolks and pirates. Yay! :)

This is such a great story! Thanks for sharing. I never played Pokemon but I did play Yu-Gi-Oh. I was the only girl in elementary school who played and none of the boys would play with me, so my brother learned just to play for my sake. Supportive siblings are the best. When I was a teenager I got into Magic the Gathering and I'm still in love with the game. The Magic community is really cool and I hope you have as many positive exsperiences with the game as I have. Magic prerelease events are really fun and I've made a lot of friends that way. I even named my service dog Elspeth after my favorite character from the Magic the Gathering story.

I used to play Magic with my older brother quite a bit when I was a kid. Never heard it being associated with devil worship, especially from my parents. They probably thought that anything that kept us from arguing and gave them several moments of peace and quiet was always a good thing. Now Dungeons and Dragons on the other hand... I still can't convince my mom that it's not some satanic ritual and that if I play it I won't magically become this psychotic murderer.

I remember being obsessed with the original Pokemon series. I watched every episode of the first season. While I grew up in New York and the demon devil worshipping suspicion didn't really exist there. My mother would never buy me Pokemon cards, because it was "too violent." I always wanted to play it with my mother's nail lady's son because he had tons of them, and I asked to play with his cards but he always said I needed my own. It broke my heart so much as a kid. I stole a deck of Pokemon cards from Toys R Us. Being raised in a traditional manner my mother made me go inside the store, return them, and admit I stole them to the store. It embarrassed me so badly I never stole again. I used to sleep with tons of Pikachu stuffed animals, and watch The Pokemon Movie every week, but my mother would hate it and comment, because she didn't like the Pokemon battling each other.

This was such a fun story! I'm not even into trading card game, but I found this really enjoyable. I tried playing Magic once when I was in middle school with this guy friend of mine who kinda had the superiority complex (I kinda looked up to him as the cool older kid even though he was only a couple months older than me) and I just did not enjoy it. I was so confused and he didn't really take the time to explain it to me. So when a bunch of my friends got into it in high school I was like "nope, no thank you." I never remember there being any "satanic" stigma against them, but then again I grew up in the northeast and didn't even hear about it until the mid-2000s so it might have been both a time and location thing. I also had another guy friend who was kinda into Pokemon in the 90s, but the only thing I ever really related to was Pikachu, mainly cause she (he?) was so cute and not because of the whole storyline and card game behind it. I remember I had this Pikachu keychain around 2004/2005 that annoyed the crap out of my teachers because ever time you squeezed it would go "Peak-ah-chu" or "Peakachu!"

Greatest story ever!!! I remember people calling the magic game evil. People would say that it would make kids do bad things. Lol. Silly. I remember playing Pokemon and i did have cards but not enough to really play well. My parents wouldn't let me go play in "things like that" i think i was more of they just didn't understand what it was. I would play with kids on my block and they would tell me about the tournaments and show me what the badges where. Anyway. Great story. Much love from Texas

I always preferred MTG because it is considerably more complex. There are so many spells and enchantments, and they are so much more a part of the game's stategy than the buffs/items in Pokemon are. Nice trip down memory lane.

Ahhhh M:tG, my terrible vice. I've been collecting and playing it since '99, and now at 28 I've a "small" mountain of cards and binder, I still get excited come every new block release and buy an entire box of booster packs. I'm sure you'll enjoy playing it once you get a chance to, it's much more involved and complex than Pokémon so it can be a little daunting but rewarding.

When I was 8 in 1999 growing up in OKC back then I didn't understand why my friends parents wouldn't let them watch the Pokemon cartoon with me or collect the cards, then the kids told me because it's 'magic' and 'satanic'. Same goes for watching Buffy the vampire slayer which was my favorite non-cartoon TV show back then. I didn't realize my parents were younger than my friends parents so maybe that's what made them more accepting to horror movies like Stephen King and accepting of anime because not much was known about it back then (pre-internet) other than Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z & Pokemon.

I never played many games of the sort. Besides the fact they were hard to get in a super rural area (Also the whole "its the devils game" thing around here), I think most of them either got them from the trips up to walmart or stole them, Anyways, I used to watch the guys played Yugioh and Pokemon, mostly because I used to hang with them at the park. I think at one point they mixed the two card games for giggles.
I also knew guys that played Magic the gathering, which was cool. But at the time I was obsessed with neopets in . I actually still have some of those Neopets cards I got as a gift. I think the guy had to travel out like an hour to the mall to get them, but I actually was badly making my own as well in the mean time.
But thats my weird ramble. stories are awesome! I'm so down with these casual stories. :D

I don't remember anything that involved other kids like those games did though (even POGS were after my time). Jeez, now I feel even older, because 1- I was too old for pokemon and stuff, and 2- I can't even remember what I did when I was 7 besides like, climbing trees or playing in the creek. holy crap.

I also was born in 1990 in Greece. My parents had the same opinion about you gi oh cards and the lord of the rings films as yours... They thought they were satanic! Now that I think about it, it's funny... But back then I thought that by liking them I was against the law or something and I used to hide these things from my parents... They even thought that gothic music is satanic! I guess some parents don't really know about these things and they just want to kind of protect their children... But if you talk to them and explain its actually ok and their opinions might change in the long run as yours and my parents now are ok with us being who we are!

I disagree with you Allison about the thought process. There are still religious legalists and extremists who do believe the board and card games are satanic. Even we are going to the year of 2018, it is still be a thing. I watched the Pokémon anime when I was a kid, I did not own any of the cards because I grew up in a Christian home, and I haven't heard of the badges or the tournaments in the stores.
