This is amazing. This really captured what a title meant to this city. Scotty has worked so hard to make great players out of so many players before Mac that just didn't make it. GC with Scotty have been ahead of the curve for basketball in this region for such a long time and going up north to play those schools and beat them is just something teams around here and GC could never do. To break through after this season with everything from losing to powerhouse North Meck to start off the Arbys Classic to the upset loss against Graham has been special but the way they did it has been legendary. Coming back to avenge the loss against Graham and beat Lee in the finals after they knocked GC out last season. Mac breaking all the records and riding off into the sunset. Everyone in the GC basketball community earned it. This piece captures the struggle that program went through.

Scotty is a heck of a coach, and a better guy. I played against scotty in high school. Tough competitor. I'm not surprised by his success. I'm very proud of him and his team. As for Mac. Kids a gladiator. I watched him hang 23 on my kids Team. And trust me that team was tough. He's special. Good luck to him at the next level.

I'm so glad he's coming to Georgetown (Big Georgetown Hoyas and Patrick Ewing Fan). He is going to get a first rate education, will be playing in the best league (The Big East), Will have a chance to play every game and may even have a strong possibility of starting most all of the games.
For GT, he is surely needed as we don't have a pure point guard, we certainly don't have a guard who can get to the rim, he will add some offensive punch from the front court that is sorely needed, his swagger and flair will attract more fans and hopefully will help recruit some future 5 star recruits to GT.
I believe Mac is greater talent than a 3 star athlete. I agree with him that it is disrespectful to rate him so low just because he plays in a small region with what is perceived as lower competition. What I am seeing on the court with his play can be done against any competition. He is explosive, he's got skills, he plays the position right and sum it all up, he is very talented. Based on those criteria, he is certainly above a 3 star rating.
When players like Alonzo, Dikembe, Othella, Reggie Williams, David Wingate, Iverson, Sleepy Floyd, Greg Monroe, Roy Hibbert, Jahidi White, Mike Sweetney, etc but most important player of them all my all time favorite player Patrick Ewing decided to go to GT, I became a huge fan of theirs. I want to become a huge fan of McClung and I think that I will.

Mad respect to Mac. Like he said, he could’ve went to a prep school and played better competition and had more national coverage, but he chose to stay loyal to his small home town and a lot of people don’t understand how much that means to the other people of a town like Gate City. A lot of guys just want to go where the spotlight is so they can make the money quicker. Mac did it right, he has a solid college career and now he’s getting his shot in the NBA.

One thing I just find amazing is that this team has at least three serious D-1 players on it. In a town with less than 2000 people. That speaks volumes of the basketball program and culture there. I went to a high school with 3000 STUDENTS and I was the first one and only one to make a D-1 squad for the first 12 graduating classes. I mean think about it... how many kids even go to GC high? 150? and out of that small a number you've got Mac McClung, Zach Ervin, and Bradley Beane (sp?) who will all most likely play D-1 ball. Somebody better start bottling that water or something because . . . . Damn.

Great story, good kid. Wish him all the best at Georgetown. Hope his athleticism translates to the college level and maybe even the pros. So much is made about him being white. Looking closely at him and his parents I'm curious if he might be slightly African-American. A lot of Southern whites who have distant family roots in this country have some African admixture. Doesn't matter, though. All that matters is he can ball, hopefully successfully on a bigger stage now.
