As an Italian (living in the north) I can say that in our country is not easy to find a job where your salary is enough to pay a rent. I'm on the verge of 26 and I find a lot of difficulties even to find a simple job like in a pizzeria or stuff like that. There's no place for young people and sometimes can happen that people in their 30 can still live with their parents. It's a serious problem. These people are commonly referred to as "mammoni" or "bamboccioni". It's a serious social problem, that's why I want to move out of Italy. It's almost impossible to find a good job. Something that can make you feel fulfilled. This is a country for old people, there's no space or opportunity for young people here. Especially if you're an artist or you don't want a corporate job.

I know what's that like. And what's worse is finding jobs outside the country needs start up capital, but things will work out okay eventually

Hi, I missed where in Italy you were. I'm in Milan. I've never experienced any racism, however some of my friends say they have. Also, if no one sits next me on the transportation, I LOVE IT!! Being from NYC I love my space.

Lots of racism in Milan. People still loudly playing their Mussolini speeches at work; shops providing poor customer service to you, but not to your blond boyfriend, etcetera. It's best to stay above it if possible.

1.) What am I saying? Re-read my exact words, not the words you hear in you head.
2.) I never stated that Milan was "super" anything. I did not make any sweeping statements about the city as a whole. You are doing that, not me.
3.) If you think that "Milan is super anti fascism", then you clearly forgot to tell all the Milanesi because I met quite a few card-carrying members, who were openly proud to tell me that they belonged to that political party that still has a seat in Italian Parliament.
4.) I stated that racism exists in Milan, and it does. Racism exists everywhere. What makes you think Milan is better than any other city in the world?
5.) When you say, "our flags", what do you mean by that. Which flags exactly?
6.) It's fine if we disagree. It is clear that we have had different experiences. Probably because we are different people, who are being treated differently by the same people. Why do you think that is?

@@al2069 Did you know about a certain Cécile Kyenge, an Italian politician of Congolese origin, who was a minister for integration in Enrico Letta's administration between 2013 and 2014? That woman was hounded, and even received threats to her life by the exponents of a certain neo-fascist political party, Lega; the same party whose leader is the current minister of interior who is busy whipping up anti-immigrant sentiment in Italy. His approval rating is soaring mainly because of his racist and xenophobic policies and rhetoric, very reminiscent of fascism. Lombadia, which Milan is the principal city, is the hub of Lega and the vices it represents--fascism being the major one.

ToughBlackseed Most Italians are not racist at all. Every country has their few racists. Just like the US, Mexico, China etc. There’s nothing you can do to change an ignorant persons mind and you shouldn’t care what they think and just live your best life. Don’t allow a few ignorant racists bother you because if you do, you are just allowing them to control you mentally. I have family and friends in and from Italy. I’m Italian and I know a lot may not be politically correct but I don’t know anyone who hates people for being another race.

I would like to point out that i Italy one does not need to wear fashionably, or wear expensive clothes. One only has to look clean and tidy, that's all. We think that smelling of sweat, wearing dirty and soiled trousers, walking around in a polyester third division short sleeves football jersey, looking shabby, smelling of alcohol, wearing oversize tracksuit bottoms that leave you bum half exposed somehow reflects how one is personally. We are not bothered about the appearance of someone, we are bothered about the mindset of someone behind that appearance.

I agree with some of the close mindedness and the staring that made me feel uncomfortable but then again I think that's thier fault for not being open or getting to know someone. Though on the flip side when you walk somewhere if you project a type of energy 9/10 you'll get that back. Not always but most of the time. Plus learning and trying the language helps. But if they have a blank face or are rude I will just say in english what happened to you, you had a bad day or something. Trust they know enough english to understand me or know they are being abit rude. I think when they are told from a non native thier behaviour they pay attention. Sometimes. Other times I just ignore. Or try to though I'm sensitive so it does affect at times. The italians who have travelled and experienced other cultures aren't as bad. Not slating all italians as I get along with most of them cool so it's just who you meet etc

Italians have the nicest people in Europe. They’re not all necessarily racist and the stares are because outside of the bigger cities they only have white people live there so most are intrigued by people that are other races. I’m Italian American and have family and friends that still live in Italy. Most are very forthright, don’t beat around the bush and tell it like it is so it may seem intimidating or like they’re rude but they are very nice people. Also, most travel and much more worldly than Americans. Maybe it’s the part of Italy she’s in but Italians just like most Europeans travel abroad at least once a year.

Couldnt have said it better myself...I visited Italy in the late 90s as a tourist for a full 6 months and while I encountered racism, was coming straight from Africa,Kenya to be precise,I found Italians to be warm and friendly and very direct...an Italian girl reached out to me a complete stranger and gave her number and we went out a couple times we met on the bus in Rome(took public transport when I was there from their magnificent bullet trains and buses from one destination to the next) sadly it was many years ago and I lost contact with her...caught me by surprise as that's something that rarely happens in USA,currently based in the US...I had a ball though and while I encountered some racism here and there NOT ALL are FLAMING RACIST as most people would love to suggest... most Italians I encountered were very warm and friendly and extremely generous was taken out for dinner and shown around a couple of times...am only speaking for myself so other people might have had bad experiences I did too in some cases but the good ones outweigh the bad ones....In the course of my stay there I toured,Rome,Milan,Venice,bologna,Verona...among so many other towns and stayed in Trento which is in the North side of Italy...would definitely love to return there again someday.

I see many comments here judging us Italians as a racist people, this is absolutely not true. Racists exist in every part of the world, one should never generalize. In Italy there are ignorant people but also good people, and whoever thinks otherwise is perhaps he who is at fault.

many are not conservative but can be with each other . With foreigners that can see you as ''fun'' or as a way to grow .
They do associate foreign females as easy so they will romanticize you and its great just be aware who is playing you versus who is truly interested.

thank you for that fair and culturally mature impression of Italy, the good and the bad. Many similar videos made by people of color are not as fair...they dont take into account how being a minority brings its own challenges in and of itself (for example many of the same sorts of things might happen to a light skinned person among a majority darker or asian community)...
you have a very healthy attitude about the racism and ignorance you experienced and that will serve you well. Some of the negatives ive heard from yours and other videos on the topic are more rooted in problems like lack of jobs or a culture of prostitution stretching back to ancient times (and the fact that many immigrant women of color end up doing sex work when they cant find normal work). I would take it as a compliment (as best one can under the circumstances) that creepy dudes think youre attractive and WISH you actually were a prostitute. the staring is probably more about resentment from the locals to foreigners due to the lack of jobs for the locals. they probably feel that if they make immigrants feel uncomfortable then maybe they wont stay...not cool, but not exactly based primarily in racism, though its a component more likely than not...anyway i hope if youre still in italy that youre enjoying yourself and feel more accepted than before as you get to understand the culture more and more...all the best to you.

Once I've even been told terrible things for not giving money to a beggar on the train! And I've found some men do stare at me - top to bottom when I dress up a bit - being a male I don't want that! I'd only advise other foreigners to focus on the good - there will surely be times when someone would've been nice/talked to you with a smile...

🌹🌹🌹I am blonde European and customer service and some waIt staff are equally snobbish to Everyone! The only ones who might be treated better are men or older ladies that live locally or have some status. Best thing to do is great them in a friendly manner at the beginning (& not let their behavior ruin your day.) Now i am almost 50, and I do get more respectful treatment than in younger years, but often they are still more worried about stealing, than about helping OR, they are texting and annoyed that a customer is in the store.!
