Hi, this video was super helpful for me, thank you for posting this. I’m moving by myself to Milan for fashion school in January from California. This definitely helped since you had a similar experience moving far away alone!
We’re going to be relocating to Italy within the next few years. My mom’s Nono came here to the US through Ellis Island and we still have family there in Decollatura! That’s where I would like to settle but I’m not opposed to Sicily either (I’ve been told they’re very warm and welcome to those who look like us! I’ve been working on my Italian like crazy and my husband and I are planning a trip for my birthday next year to visit Decollatura (doubling as our scouting trip) so I’m looking forward to seeing how far I’ve progressed with it and getting some IRL practice! Thank you for posting this! Love it and I’m definitely a subscriber now! 🤗
My biggest tip for moving overseas: get rid of things, then get rid of more things. I moved to Germany last year for my Masters but I'm looking into applying for jobs in Italy after I finish. I shipped about 5 small moving boxes of stuff then just brought my backpack and suitcase with me. That wasn't a pain in the ass really, but I just moved apartments and I felt overwhelmed by the stuff haha. And if I move to Italy I want to get rid of more things. It's hard, but so helpful!
Girl @6:18 the stare in Italy i want to correct you. it is considered rude to stare. I think they do it cause you're pretty and look different as in they're trying to figure you out. ALso please one thing you have to understand that many people you encounter in Italy are not italians. They are also from Romanian, Albanian (especially), Croatians, etc. they may look and speak Italian but they are not. Anyway don't pay them any attention just smile, wave and keep strutting.
I’m here now and omg the stares!!!! Thank you for this video because I’m here on the 90-day visa now and I love it so much. So I’m trying to figure out how to stay longer and this is super helpful. 💜
@@WhereisMalikah Hey!! I’m in Monza staying in an Airbnb. I have so enjoyed Italy but I went to Munich for the first time over the weekend. Now I’m feeling a bit shook and wondering if the visa processes are easier in other EU countries? I just need to research. Where are you living now? I guess I could also look up a newer video and check! 😅💜
Bellissimo vlog ! Coraggiosa a partire senza aver imparato l'italiano ! Great job ! Italian is the easiest language on earth ... You can learn a base in 4 weeks of intensive training ! :D
And if you do not need a student visa rather a job? My move right now is to apply for remote jobs in Italy or in the US that allows me to work from anywhere. Any tips for applying jobs that would sponsor me from the US?
This video was great. I am in Cannes because I know some French and no Italian at all but my dream has always been to live in Italy. The fear of not knowing the language has stopped me. Also, not knowing which area to go. Saying think of what you envision yourself doing every day to make that decision was really an eye opener and helpful! Good luck from new subscriber Also, you mentioned Rome or Florence and not Milan, can you mention your opinion why as an American, you can’t go wrong with those two cities? Really thinking about making the move. 🙏🏽🌹
Oooh Cannes sounds amazing!! I loved Milan but it's the most international city and lots expats so it didn't feel as immersive as an Italian experience, esp since my job was focused on international marketing

I def want to be around nice people, good climate and a way to live somewhere and feel welcomed…. You should def visit Cannes and the Côte d’Azur.
Thanks for being honest about that difference in treatment between Africans and African-AMericans (I've heard that from others) it depends on which category you are perceived to be in.. An "rich" American tourist or a "poor African immigrant." Also there is some bias against Muslim immigrants in the country overall. As you said though there are nice people and rude and/or racist people EVERYWHERE.
My daughter is moving to Italy for 6mths on an educational grant. I will be in Rome 3 mths then 3mths in Florence. My nerves are rattled not knowing neighborhoods and also not being able to physically seem them until I get there. Can you provide me any assistance with good parts of Rome and Florence also if you think apartment or Airbnb which are alone at the same difference. Great informative vid Malikah. Sorry about all the stares. I would venture to say it was less about race and more about admiration of your immense beauty. What a shining star!
Girl I dont really do this but you really need to meet my sister. YOU GUYS ARE TWINS. I mean wow its unbelievable that you look and almost have the same aura. Unbelievable!!! who would have thought
In Italy I have never met integrated blacks, I know that there are of course, but I wanted to make a statistical comparison, there are Italians who have never met them up close! it is different from America. So you have to think that for an Italian it is always something new and he has to get used to it. social class also counts, it's true. After hearing the whole serious speech, at the "they look" I laughed for 10 minutes hahaha yes we do it especially in little city with a stranger, stranger is a novelty, a tip to make someone who is looking at you turn their gaze is to look at him more intensely than he does, you give him a taste of his own medicine and he will look away, i do, it always work. About woman, It's not that we like black women, we like women! it is more simple🤣...and yes, like in all countries, there are those who want an adventure and those who want serious things. Regardless of where you come from how you dress in Italy we notice it immediately, we even look at socks, if they are long in the summer we think, "why doesn't she wear short ones it's the middle of August?" We don't tell you if we don't know you but we think probably, if we are famous for design and fashion there must be a reason
Are they racist? I grew up in Europe as a Caribbean British in England. American Italians or so different from Italians in Italia. Us Europeans are sophisticated. But the way they treat Mario Balotelli in football is not on. Italia has the best food, Culture and Racism statistically but thank the Lord that was not my experience growing up, Been going to Italy all my life.
I don't know anything about football so can't comment there, but I do think there is a lot more racism in Italy than in other parts of Europe and its gotten worse since I lived there. That being said I never personally felt affected, and I can't really say why
What is the sexism like? What are the food prejudices? How macho are the men? Do the women cry to get what they want? Ignorance is the right word, and it goes for ALL prejudice, all stereotypes. What is it like to be blonde and blue eyed? What is it like ... to live asking meaningless questions? :)
