- Wogan, 27/03/1992 - a bizarre interview, with everyone (apart from the confused audience) in on the joke that a pre-Fast Show Simon Day actually was Tommy Cockes ("TC"), star of the music halls. A slightly worse-for-wear David Tomlinson, of Mary Poppins fame, and good ol' Terry Wogan laugh along. A wonderful ten minutes!
Not my copyright, just sharing found ephemera.
David Tomlinson is completely underrated! He should have been given a knighthood!
Tomlinson really appreciated that you cld see!
When Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson asked Simon Day to be a regular writer and performer in The Fast Show, they told him they really liked Tommy Cockles and wanted him to be a regular character in The Fast Show.
Even the Great David Tomlinson knew TC had a great career ahead of him A wise man
Sound of Music?! Was Wogan taking the michael?!! David Tomlinson is a legend!
The most awkward interview ever. Wogan was hopeless here.
There was a period where Terry Wogan got a bit too big for his boots with all the success; three-times a week chat show, etc. Latterly, he came down to earth again and was the BBC's favourite radio and tv host we all appreciated, but here, he is absolutely dreadful; struggling to know what to do with such a diverse booking. Dear old David Tomlinson must've wondered what on earth he was doing on what was a really rubbish edition of Wogan. The audience clearly felt uncomfortable, given their silence.
britishcomposers yes this was definitely Wogan’s worst period. And this ‘Wogan’ is from its dying weeks
@@givemethevalium right, you can feel that now you say it. He was dreadful here, producing some really bad TV
It's dry humour at it's driest, they are all in on it
David Tomlinson seemed to totally retire from acting after 1980, no one ever heard from him again. I was amazed he ever came out of retirement. Are there any more times he came out of retirement?, please let me know if you know of any.
Jack Cunningham I wouldn’t say out of retirement, but when I was in London in 1998 he was celebrating a birthday near either London or Salisbury or Bath. I don’t recall where I was, but it was a private party and when I asked the tourist guide she told me he was celebrating his birthday, and I was dying to go see Mr. Banks in person. But, alas, it was not to be. I believe he died a few years after.
I just wanted to see any other seen of David Tomlinson on TV after retirement like at Movies Reunion for example. Did you meet him in person at all?
@@fonso1030Died in 2000.
Yeah he's had a very interesting life. I wonder what he did after retirement he would've retired at 63 he could've gone on for longer though.
'little brown chaps like acorns'
His eyes are brown. Their eyes are blue. It is 100% impossible he's their son. Two blue eyed people CANNOT have a brown eyed son.
Been searching for this for years, watched it live and remember the friction between Terry and David. Remember Terry as being a bit of an arse, but maybe he knew something about Tomlinson? Either way, a pretty uncomfortable interview.
Certainly a memorable episode... Wish I'd got the whole Tomlinson interview to see how that panned out.
Wogan’s taking a lot of flak here but the audience isn’t able to get on board with Tommy’s anecdotes. Was too straight and even Simon acknowledges it at end saying ‘you did well’ to wogan as oppose to Tommy who was crash an burning.
The thing I remember most about Tommy Cockles was when Count Arthur Strong came along and made that character funny
Whitesnake! 😂😂😂😂😂
I used to adore David Tomlinson as a kid especially in the Love Bug: perfect comic timing and old world British eccentricity. Sadly they don't make them like that anymore :(
HAVERSHAW❕
All Simon Day needed to take from this was that the biggest talent in that room aside him was absolutely delighted with his TC character.
When David Tomlinson 'gets' it, you've done something very good indeed.
Thank you so much for uploading this.
Tommy went straight over their heads, but David got it completely.
I love Terry Wogan bless him but how bloody ignorant can you get thinking David Tomlinson was in The Sound Of Music lol. Always loved David's moustache, blower/ trilby hats and business suits with the poppy in the top pocket, David was synonymous that way and can't get used to him without all that in his other films. Loved David Tomlinson and he will always be Mr. Banks, Emilius Browne and Peter Thorndyke to me. Wish he was still around and working today and wish he had made more classics both Disney and non-Disney.
It's MY tuppence! Without seeing the original I dunno what that Sound of Music bit was all about... There was definitely an in-joke thing going on here, so Wogan may've been referring back to earlier in the show... which, alas, I didn't tape.
Yeah it definitely seems like he's referencing it deliberately.
"Banks you hear me..........Baaannnnkkkksssss"
Holy crap! The David Tomlinson being interviewed? Amazing!
Sweet innit!
Too bad it seems to be the only TV interview he did. It's actually amazing that you discovered this. I had given up hope of finding much interviews Tomlinson did even after retirement.
Tommy Cockles is genius and wasted on that audience.
I remember seeing him at 'half time' during the Big Night Out tour in December '91 - 90% of the Hammersmith Odeon audience walked out, and I think we were the only ones to plead for an autograph afterwards!
@@ppotter I'd have stayed. You met him wow!
That joke about Tommy not liking Stringfellows but preferring Ministry of Sound on a Friday night really deserved a bigger laugh, bit over the audiences head I think.
Simon Day is brilliant, and David Tomlinson's reaction to him is great.
A great coupling - long live TC!
Yep - David was generous and knew how to react. Terry made a Herculean effort to keep it going though. I sensed Simon was getting nervous and running out of material.
Tommy Cockles (Simon Day) & David Tomlinson interview (Wogan, 1992) 0553am 2.8.23 that's not bad, is it... wakes up of a morning... gets a lift to an obscure corner of a street somewhere. walks about a bit. gets a bit of sympathy from the derby and joan.... and gives a talk to a rapt audience... or a literally captive audience. we haven't quite made up our minds on that score. durin' the worwer (war) tommy was seen to be enacting various music hall skits to a shell shocked audience to much applause. and aplomb.
What a bizarre interview, this doesn’t flow at all well. Seems very odd to have DT playing second fiddle to a character, perhaps he’d already been interviewed beforehand but still…
Such a rare treat to see David Tomlinson in interview
Wogan, rest his soul, was always unbearable on TV and a shite interviewer, so cringeworthy and clumsy. He was on 5 days a week too. My brother always swore he was pissed!
Tommy to David : Hows he treating you? (Wogan) ? Alright? ....David : Not really ..... 😂😂✅ Love it so much
Simon Day ....BRILLIANT !! 👏👏👏
How did you get your start in show business ? ‘ I used to perform in Bomb shelters unfortunately it was very dark so no one saw us .....”
I always thought TC was based on Barry Cryer.
Roy Hudd
I had a very very minor part in ‘Taxi Driver’ peeping from behind a wall 😂😂✅
Wogan really dropped the ball here, he was hopeless!
“I think they’re fast asleep” 😂😂😂
Was Vanessa Williams on that edition? She was on TOTP the day before performing Save the Best For Last.
No idea I'm afraid, that's all I recorded.
Omg he’s incredible 😂✅
OMG cant believe in this ,i found a interview of David Tomlinson.....He is my favorite actor since marypoppins and then i started looking for more and more information about him but failed,he was not quite active i think...can you pls post more of this bout him?really really want to see him off-screen...its a pity i knew him too late
I found this on the end of a tape, and the first half was missing, sadly.
Look for Bedknobs and Broomsticks
@@ppotter What was the rest of the tape? Late night channel4 women's mud wrestling championships?
@@theculturedthug6609 men's, maybe. Channel 4 kabaddi coverage is a possibility.
@@ppotter You a nuffter?
Disney legend! David Tomlinson

A. George Banks
B. Peter Thorndyke

They're all so devilishly DELICIOUS. But George Banks is my favorite.

I'd say both A and C.
George Banks
I'm about to turn 30... I grew up watching Marry Poppins several times a week for years! It shaped me as a child in the best ways possible. All the best actors from Marry Poppins are leaving the mortal world and it saddens me greatly! As a kid his role made me dislike him but as I grew up I learned to appreciate his position in the movie and how his character developed. I shed a tear when I learned last year that he had passed away. Almost as much as I cried watching Karen Dotrice cry in an interview about not seeing Matthew as much as she wished she did between the events of Mary Poppins and his very untimely death at a young age. Out of any movie and cast, I had always dreamed to meat Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and The rest of the main people.
I hope you're doing well today. We lost Glynis Johns today😔. Please share any other Mary Poppins memories, I would love to hear them :)
I always enjoyed Wogan's show; it's only now that I realise what a godawful interviewer he could be.
whitesnake
The studio picked him up in a car for this interview. But he had to get a taxi back *true fact*
Terry- 'You're not very popular in the business, are you?' Nice question, not!
Old TC such a pro.
Oooo painful...
Pearls to swine - they thought he was being genuine.
Hello there! Tommy Cockles heres.
"This is my life, this is my wife"

"Hello, there! We're now going to see a piece of film set in the first world war and it was a very sad time for me. I was the youngest private to ever fight in the British army. Although those guns weren't modern, believe me those bullets still hurt. Now, I'm going to ready a poem I wrote at the time. For me, it brings me terrible memories. For me, it was the terrible trenches. the mustard gas. The Nazi uniforms. It's quiet sad. It was sad time really. It's titled "Armand Days" ... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!"
It’s amazing he was quite old in Mary poppins he lived a very full life
I don't know who that other guest beside good ol Tommy is ..but he seems to get Tommy and seems a class act, an oldschool gent.
that is THE david tomlinson
most famous for being mr banks in mary poppins (1964)
truly genius
Wigon's ears were fucking HUGE!
Like pulling teeth
I barely recognized David.
Well that went down like a lead balloon didn't it.....
Depends on your taste, I suppose.
I think he is hilarious and very clever....the audience didnt seem to think so@@ppotter
@@paulmorphy6187 I always imagined a Wogan audience being coached in from old folks' homes
insane!
Worse for Wear?
Yes, thanks!
DT worse-for-wear?
Does no one speak like David Tomlinson anymore? That's the England I want to hear.
Come and have a listen... someone may... possibly...
Not since the likes of Ian Carmichael and Terry Thomas popped their clogs.
Where is his accent from
The burning hatred between Tel and Tommo.
Still,TC stayed chipper.
Imagine if Marie had been there!
