Carlyle's Rumplestilskin could have carried his own series. The best thing about this show is the 'villains' were shown to be human. And some of the 'heroes' were monsters.

If you look at brother's grim and other versions he seems to be por trying Rumple really well. Also means the behind the scenes wrote well too. They must've taken a chance with this character. Luckily he plays these characters really well. Satisfying it is.

Robert Carlyle said in an interview he plays like 6 versions of rumple and a couple versions of gold. rumple before he was drafted, rumple after being injured, rumple after Milah left, rumple shortly after becoming the dark one, rumple after losing his son, rumple several hundred years into the dark curse. Gold is cursed and then not cursed. And then there is a cursed and uncursed version of weaver. and he plays different versions differently with unique voices and gestures and expressions.

Everytime Rumple is on screen I just get goosebumps because he's able to convey so many people at once especially when he says dearie.

Honestly, they all convey so many personalities they all deserve accolades... This whole series is how god wants us to live... Love the bad people until they change into their true selves... Runole started as a sweet boy, Regina was a a lover, all the bad bad anti-heros were real and changed... Even maleficent became real, very few didn't reform.. the blind witch, hades and cruella just couldn't be reformed of all the bad guys they faced... Everyone else turned to a life of love, guided and led by love!
Robert makes the show, Jennifer may be the lead character, but without Robert there is no show, which is sad, because it forced them the revived him after his arc with Peter Pan, which was the end of the show actually being great

Very complex performer generally as he can do humour,, evil, light, misery, good, dark, silly, arrogant, the lot. And he's been doing that for decades. Wonderful actor.

I feel like Rumplestilskin has totally one of the best backstories the series has to offer. Throughout the series, we see that even though he has succumbed to the dark one's darkness in many ways, he still has the soft side he had prior to that. Specially when we see his whole story, since he was a child until he became the dark one, every choice made was related to his past and not wanting the same for himself or for his son. Truly, a golden heart that had to follow a dark path.

and when unfortunately baelfire/neal died under his eyes of rumple and emma, I had cried with them.
It's that little giggle that shows the true lack of sanity in Rumplestiltskin, and that's why I love him!

I started watching this show not knowing what to expect, and this man's performance made me love Rumple immediately, even before he was really likeable. He deserves an award for this performance

My closest friend was a major fan of the show and Rumple was her favorite character. She always talked about how incredible Robert Carlysle is with his performance and how fascinating his character arc and romance with Belle was. Sadly she passed away almost three months ago, but now I understand why she loved him so much.

He even can make it happen while throwing in the folktales "impishness" with those silly laughs..you can tell the humble man becomes a self-obsessed power hungry ego-maniac. Truly absolute power CAN CORRUPT absolutely.
