We use 'ply' as well in Australia. Eons ago, plys used to be commercially standardised, so a 4ply had in fact 4 strands, 8ply used to have 8 strands. I'm in my 60's now, as a child, to find what ply a wool was, unravel the end a little bit & count the strands. It's all different now. Thank you for another enjoyable episode
Amber of A Lovely Yarn in the US recommended your video. So glad she did. I love knitting videos from other countries. Your shop is lovely. Would love to visit it.
Love everything about your podcast -- great pace, interesting projects and gorgeous yarns! And I love that you have so many great WIPS and that you knit one of as many socks as you can during October - brilliant!
Im looking forward to your sock pattern. When I have a new sock pattern I pick one size and do it to the letter. Then I make adjustments to fit me. I have never had a pattern that I could just follow and it fitted perfectly. My tension changes and not just over the years. I have a pair of socks that I did everything the same, yet one is larger than the other one and I do the socks one after the other
Oh dear! You may enjoy the "two at a time method". I honestly do not, but I know several people who do that and then they have better luck with their socks matching perfectly 😊
another great episode. I am also using this month to make all the socks I can, it has been a great motivator. I love the look of the White Rainbow, it looks like the most beautiful water colour version. My granddaughters favourite colours are pink and 'rainbow' she would live in a garment made in that yarn. How luxurious would those fingerless gloves be too.
Appreciate the ply question and answer….I have been concluding your explanation from what I have heard but this is the first time I have heard it fully explained.
I agree a bit of texture is great for variegated sock yarn. I really like to use a 4 stitch basket weave texture for mine. You are inspiring me to cast on a new pair of socks 😊
Another great episode! Such a nice chatty yet informative style. Glad you solved my confusion about plys and about possum yarn. Your version of the night shift shawl is amazing and I liked your use of artistic discretion...it sounds really fun.
Hi Alana, great video, lots of socks. 🧦 I haven’t knit any this socktober. Right now I’m at the end of knitting my Nightshift. Yours is lovely. I’m using one background color, a light tan Noro and using the color changing Noro Keuron for the patterning. Heard of your podcast from Amber of A lovely yarn podcast.
Love your podcast-would love to visit, also try the cashmere-possum-silk yarn. The cloudburst mitt sounds dreamy. Also the dark & light rainbow yarn-love!
Love your videos, Alana. I missed soctober because I did Stephen's MKAL which is finished, so now I will be doing socks (thank you for the stunning range of suitable yarns!). I often get confused with matching local terminology re yarns too, one day I will see all my swatches together! Best wishes!
Hi,,,,,❤❤so pleased I heard about you from amber🎉🎉🎉 Really enjoyed ur episode,,,,and love, love 🧦🧦 socks,,,addicted ,,in fact!!! Thank you so much for explaining your plies compared to our fingering DK. What did you say your sport weight would be in New Zealand. I love all your socks. You did a great job. Very nice. They fit you perfectly. I like your cardigan. I like everything you made I love watching your podcast thank you.
Yes I love my sweaters! It definteily gets cold in the winter, but we never get snow in Auckland- they do get snow sometimes in places on the South Island, but not up here... however I tend to run colder than average and I've found my wool sweaters help regulate body temperature unlike anything else 😊
Love your podcast Alana. I’m a 58 year old Aussie so we have always used the term ply to describe yarn weight but when I started watching UA-cam podcasts I soon got used to the other terminology that other countries used, which I still get a bit confused with but I just google it to get the answer. I have always wanted to know how do yarn shops keep their yarn safe from moths and other yarn eating insects especially as the yarn is on display?
Thank you! Yes, with so much terminology it can definitely get confusing... In my experience moths actually prefer dark and/or damp spaces that are rarely disturbed, but at the shop it's light and full of open air, and the yarn gets touched and moved around so often we've never had a problem! I do the same with my stash at home, keeping it on open shelves away from direct sunlight and I've also never had a problem there 😊
thank you! Basically we both have always loved wolves (Lupine) and talked for years about starting a business with "Lupine" in the title. We changed the spelling to "LOOPine" as a bit of a knitting pun 😊 Hence the wolf in our logo (I drew it on my iPad)
Hi from Tauranga NZ luv your podcast very informative. Please also could you tell me the name and price of the gorgeous pink and black wool that is hanging over the box. Luv it
Hello to you in Tauranga! If it's the one I think you're talking about, it's a sock set from Circus Tonic Yarns called "Cloudberry": loopinewool.co.nz/products/circus-tonic-dathli?variant=45857540669678
How do you find the fit of the short row heels. I have tried them but they are always an uncomfortable tight fit. You obviously have solved this problem
I have personally never had a problem when I followed the Fish Lips Kiss Heel method, mine always fit great. That being said I am adding in some increases and decreases to the short row heel now which I think will improve the fit for people with higher insteps. Pattern coming in the future! 😊
Its an Australian Brush Tail Possum. (Looks nothing like the American opossum.) The fur is plucked off the carcass \ hide. Silk is added to help hold the fur in the wool during spinning I think.
27:09 “Question Corner” starts here 😊
Thanks! Maybe you can teach me how to create "Chapters"? 😘
Thank you so much for amazing inspiration and sharing your passion for Yarn and beautiful Knits 🧶🤩🥰
Aw its my pleasure, thank YOU for watching! 🥰

thanks for putting my thoughts down so we'll, it was the same in NZ.
Yes exactly right on the plys! It used to actually make more sense but now it's all different and can get confusing 😅
Love the shawl your wearing and I am knitting socks too
Thanks! Socks are the best
You are now one of my favorites podcast. I love your knits and you are very enjoyable to watch as I knit. Good luck with your shop and podcast.
thank you so so much! So happy to have you here 😊
love that hat. Hope to see the pattern soon.
A Lovely Yarn mentioned your calming podcast, well done.
Thank you! I saw that, it was such a sweet mention 🥰
your explanation of ply terms vs US terms was helpful. Thank you. Enjoy all your videos and look forward to more of your Q&A segments.
Oh I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you 😊
Wow! So many socks!!! Love your Q&A section, always something new to learn, that’s what makes me love knitting and this community!
Thank you SO much! 😊
I love the whitened rainbow yarn! ❤
Oh my gosh me too! 🤩 I've knit the hat now, will show it soon
Amber of A Lovely Yarn in the US recommended your video. So glad she did. I love knitting videos from other countries. Your shop is lovely. Would love to visit it.

I heard about you from another podcaster, she was saying how lovely you are, and she followed you. Great episodes 😊
That is beyond sweet, thank you so much 😊

Oh my gosh a garment in that pale rainbow would be totally beautiful! I agree that water colour is a perfect description 🥰
Appreciate the ply question and answer….I have been concluding your explanation from what I have heard but this is the first time I have heard it fully explained.
Oh I'm so glad it helped! 😊
Omg I love that red sock yarn you used. Also we mostly used ply when referring to wool in Australia but I’m getting used to both
thank you, it's so soft! Yes I think AU terminology is similar to here...
Thanks for that chart. That helps a lot!
I'm so glad it helped!
I agree a bit of texture is great for variegated sock yarn. I really like to use a 4 stitch basket weave texture for mine. You are inspiring me to cast on a new pair of socks 😊
Oh I'm so glad to hear it! I would definitely love to try a 4 stitch basket weave one, sounds like an easy repeat and beautiful texture!

Aw thanks so mcuh!
That hat in that yarn is gorgeous! Love the dark rainbow colour.
Thank you, me too!
Yes. Wow on the lighter rainbow skeins. Such talent from all the dyers out there.
Totally! We have some great dyers
Loving your podcast. Great to see all the socks in the KAL on instagram.
Yay I'm so glad they've been appreciated! 😊
Your podcast has made me start to plan my next trip to Auckland (won't be til 2025 but planning is in motion 😍)
Oh heck yes! Hope to see you when you're here 🥰
She could make a ki5 with both of the rainbow skeins called Rainbows on the Dark. 😂 it is really nice.
Definitely! I'll have to plant the seed for that idea 🤩
great episode. look forward to your vanilla sock recipe and the episode on how you came to be a LYS owner in New Zealand!!
thanks so much! The second one of those just went up today 😉

Elaine in canada🎉🏡
Hi Elaine from Canada! Thank you so much for watching and for your support! ❤️
I love you channel. Liked the part on yarn weights today. Most of Europe uses the ply terminology as welk. I think I prefer the North American terms
Thanks heaps! Terminology can be confusing 😅
Thank you so much for explaining your plies compared to our fingering DK. What did you say your sport weight would be in New Zealand. I love all your socks. You did a great job. Very nice. They fit you perfectly. I like your cardigan. I like everything you made I love watching your podcast thank you.
thank you so much, you are so kind! Sport weight would be like a 5-6 ply for us over here 👍
Hahahahaha; yep, I was kinda wondering about "possum" yarn. Being from the South, ya' know; was kinda thinkin'. Hahahaha. thanks for explaining.
Hahahhhahhhaaa yup!
Always very interesting! You knit and wear a lot of sweaters, which is great. Does it get cold there? Do you get snow ❄️?
Yes I love my sweaters! It definteily gets cold in the winter, but we never get snow in Auckland- they do get snow sometimes in places on the South Island, but not up here... however I tend to run colder than average and I've found my wool sweaters help regulate body temperature unlike anything else 😊

How did you come up with the name for your store? It’s lovely to watch another NZ podcast.

@ I will wait for your pattern. I do have a high instep which is probably my problem. Many thanks
How do they manage to brush a possum? I have never heard of possum yarn.
Its an Australian Brush Tail Possum. (Looks nothing like the American opossum.) The fur is plucked off the carcass \ hide. Silk is added to help hold the fur in the wool during spinning I think.
