I'm an Irish drummer living in spain.simce I've moved to Spain never has any group welcomed nor sanctioned me to input high tempo punk beats or blasts beats in their music. To contextualise: I've offered in my professional playing opportunities my ability to play up tempo punk beats with a certain quality to groups who had what I heard as up tempo songs. They unanimously here in Spain asked that I played the regular time conventional beat and I have done so without resistance as it paid me some dough. But for me to watch a mostly jazz and since then drum and bass innovator JoJo Mayer demonstrate a perfect up tempo punk beat without worry of what the others expect of him tells me that musicians don't have preconceptions of their art, they play what their spirit tells them. In Spain still, the musicians are concerned more with public opinion over free expression. How else can I explain never once hearing any Spanish rock band having anything uptempo? It's not in their convention. Pity that, and apian has so many great musicians but they mostly lack the freedom of musical speech their other European counterparts seem to have. Remember, JoJo Mayer is Swiss born! I wonder how many Spanish musicians he has recorded with throughout his pro career?
It's funny because when he does that "slow blast beat" in the beginning, I always taught myself to use the high hat that way because I thought it gave the heavier music a fuller sound and it does I think. I hated how bands would not do that and make it sound lazy to me with less hi hat. Jojo geddy Lee edition mayor is a master drummer though. Hopefully he understands now that THAT music is just supposed to sound like that no matter how simple and mindless it might be to him.
Open hi hats are fun, they are meant for upbeat music, punk, metal etc. If you don't like it, oh well. I love it, stick to closed hi hats and less crash. Lol.
I suppose you're right I guess I just worded my comment poorly. This lesson is more aimed at beginners as well. The point I was trying to make was that he expresses himself a lot better now and gives much better better/informative insight....not bashing him at all. Jojo is probably my fav :)
Well, even then these people, the best of them, play with space and restraint even if the energy is heavy on the parts that are played. Great songwriting begs for great drum parts and your point, as right as you are to bring it up, has a limit when discussing the finer details. Great comment, though. Very astute.
Let's be honest here: Geniuses know 99% of the knowledge of a certain field. Jojo Mayer knows 99% of drumming knowledge. And that 1% he DOESN'T know, is punk drumming. Dave Grohl, who was basically built around punk drumming, said in an interview to 60minutes that punk drumming, to him, is basically about POWER. Anything that doesn't show power, can't be considered punk. And that includes the drums. "But that wastes energy!" Yes. Power, in any form, wastes energy. You can't show power without wasting energy. Punk is all about showing that: WE HAVE POWER. Drumming-wise, Jojo is right in this video. Punk-wise, on the other hand, he doesn't know what he's talking about. It's normal: every legend fails. Grohl can't play Tony Williams. Jojo can't play Punk. IT'S NORMAL. Just don't talk about something you know nothing about.
You didn't grasp what he was saying here at all. He never advocated a lack of power. He advocates putting power where it is needed and being aware of what sounds good.
@@theelement6255 That just means, once again, that he doesn't know Punk. Punk is Power, and Power isn't necessarily supposed to sound good. The purpose of a Bomb is being Powerful. Not sounding nor looking good. "But you can be powerful and beautiful at the same time!" Yes you can! But that's not Punk! Beethoven is powerful and beautiful in some of his compositions. He isn't a Punk composer. Punk is about stamina, wasting energy in dumb ways, sounding trashy and being powerful. Good techniques, as good as they are, don't help with Punk's goal.
@@00vulture that’s a critique of philosophy. I promise you, a philosophy doesn’t square with sound. In the studio, they’ll make you re-record if you get a piss poor sound; they’ll compress your cymbals to hell or sound replace. Live, a sound guy will do everything they can to make up for you being garbage on a kit. So…maybe to be fair, the way to approach this is: technically he’s not talking about punk. He’s talking about not sounding shit on your instrument
He really is one of the greatest!
Jojo struggle to play without dinamics... Hilarious, love him
This is great. What great funky dynamics.
He looks like Geddy Lee here
Colin Evans lol exactly
Holy Fuck!!! Man this is insane just bloody insane, thanks for this upload
Awesome, love his style!
We need more Jojo D-beats
It’s like he’s telling me ‘just be really good at drums’
😅
that speed starting from 0:40 actually scared the shit out of me. godfuckingdammit
Definitely want to play your cymbals for many years to come, beating them to death isn't going to get that done.
"Learn how to be economic with your phrasing." - A lot of drummers doesn't know what it is. And Know the wrong way.
needa find the full video of this.. not just little snippets floating on the web haha
Be yourself like he's himself.
This entire video used to be up on UA-cam. Does anyone have a copy of the rest of the clinic?
Man, DAT FLAMMY CHOP at 2:52 - 2:56 is simply way too tasty.
Blushda ;)

It's subjective. Personally, drummers laying into their hihat and China cymbals drives me insane.
Where was him on this clinic?. I Remember a couple of solos from this clinic that were mind blowing but never saw them again on UA-cam.
Camilo Andrés Barreto Ulloa
They were erased from a certain channel but never uploaded again 😕

all that is right but tell that to my adrenaline when i play hardcore and metal :D
Only the Mayer is a Mayer

His english and his way of explaining things seems to have improved a lot lol. I don't think they took much away from this clinic based on this clip.

How had I never heard him before??? wtf??
It's just a process, because he now is mature, and apply other things, so....
Weckltastic!!

Economical phrasing... (teach our political entities to dynamically listen also) 😆
