Bottleship might be a reference to a bottled ship. A bottled ship is a model of a boat inside of a bottle which is made to look impossible to get in or out of the bottle. I think there even was one in the pirate of the carribean movies
Yup, good old New Amsterdam.. Also a lot of rivers in that area of New York are called Kills, which is Dutch for river. Me, being from NY often get asked why we have towns and rivers names kill , like Fishkill, Peekskill, Wallkill, etc. and I have to explain it means river in Dutch, the first Europeans who settled the area.
Captain Hara is a treasure source when referring to his own operations. But some caution needs to be exercised when taking his world for the large picture IJN.
Its also frequently cited in a lot of Pacific War histories. Capt. Hara fought in many of the major sea battles (including Java Sea) with skill, honour and luck; he was also a very humble man who was not above self criticism. His book is well worth reading.
In the USA there is a condiment sold called Gulden's Mustard. So I think its a play on words, giving the nickname of the Gouden Leeuw, as the Mustard ship
Great one, Jingles. I own this book and can not speak highly enough for it. If you don't have a copy and you at all care about anything that's ever floated with people and naval artillery aboard - you must have it IMO. I wish the history I had learned in my youth had been so effectively and fairly written.
"Wargaming might have taken a little too much of this feedback onboard" I'm confused, I thought the issue was that they *didn't* take feedback on board at all.
They are actually landlubberish BAD. The commander of a ship is not called 'kapitein' (captain as that is the case on a civil ship) but 'commandant'. Next 'Alle Hens aan dek' (All hands on deck) is a ceremony to get the crew officialy on deck for an announcement. It should be 'Gevechtswacht op post' (Combat stations) and so on. They could just have aked at the dutch Naval Museum when the developers were there. Then they would also have found out better to start with de destroyer and submarine lines.
today's pre-video ad was one from WG asking me to come back and try the game again because "why not". They clearly care about the recent exodus of existing players just as much as they care for the new players they are gaining each day
This is a case of weegee actually doing some proper research for like half a hot minute. The Dutch were not blind, and realized that Japan was gonna be their primary opponent in the East. While the Dutch didnt have the capacity to make any serious CVs, they did have uncountable numbers of islands. The plan was to make every island an airfield.
I did like the low tier Dutch cruisers, because their high velocity shells are hilariously easy to aim, and the ammo performs quite well. So, the dpm may seem low, but your hits and pens, at least at tier 6 and below are going to be above your general average.
I also highly recommend Japanese Destroyer Captain. I first went through that back in 1970 or so and it is a great first hand point-of-view work. Wonderful! Hmm everyone forgets the Naval battles at Makassar Strait and Balung Strait. I might add that Captain Hara covers his end of the actions in the invasion of the Dutch East Indies, including the Battle of the Java Sea. - still doesn't explain the Dutch cruiser air strike, but, as you say, Jingles, WOWs does what it wants, it ain't real.
Jingles: Japanese Destroyer Captain is highly regarded for its insight into the war from.the Japanese naval perspective. Me: Shut up and take my money!

Actually Jingles, the Alaska in that infamous video took 3 airstrikes from a single Gouden Leuww whilst he was reversing. If memory serves the GL could store 3 airstrikes simultaneously during testing. Plus I'm pretty sure they changed the airstrike a fair bit after seeing all the backlash that clip got and not only nerfing the guns for no goddamn reason.. I think the Alaska took around 10-15k per airstrike as the bombs go through its 36mm deck and with 3 simultaneous airstrikes the result was something like 30-40k dmg in the span of about 5 seconds. Far faster than most ships could hope to shift from reverse to full speed ahead, especially when being unfamiliar with the mechanic.
well be envious of the upcoming german commander which will have the german voice actor of DIE HARD(even the picture of the commander reminds us of John Mclane.. the imposter).. which can be appropriate since many players do just that xD
Not to mention the voiceactor they chose also does a lot of cartoon work. It may work for kids, but it annoys the hell out of me. Such an irritating voice.
There's one thing about the Gouden Leeuw that might be important to point out: most Dutch ships from the 1930s usually share the equipment and often the design as well from the German cruisers. The Dutch often have weapons built by the Swedish, aka the Bofors, yet most Dutch cruisers after tier VI come with German main guns, and their German dispersion. Remember, Scharnhorst wasn't the most accurate battleship with those guns, neither is the Gouden Leeuw. The armor on the ship is questionable. Like all Dutch cruisers, they can be citadelled. The lighter armor the ship has, the less chance to be citadelled, yet more vulnerable to HE spam. The Gouden Leeuw is both. The airstrike cannot be buffed or increased with perks sadly, just like the Tone and Ise, there are no plane skills on ships other than carriers. So you're pretty focused on starting fires and hitting broadsides, while exposing your weakpoints. Damage Control Party and heals are definitely needed, when it burns, it burns forever. Planes are best used on stationary, big ships with bad AA. I'm mostly using those planes on Japanese ships because of their low AA for their tier, bad consealment and their superstructure. German BBs work as well. American BB can work if their AA has been reduced. As a Dutch person, I am kind of saddened that they turned out to be like this, yet I'm happy that the devs acknowledged the existance of the Dutch marine and added them to the game. The Dutch marine wasn't as good during WW2 as they were in the VOC time. Yet they remained vital in the defense of the Dutch Indies, Phillipines and Australia. The Australians and Dutch worked closely together, even on their ships, sometimes there were both Dutch and Australian captains aboard.
Love the rinse and repeat indoctrination rant backed up by edit proving we cannot trust a single word. Funny how everyone keeps telling themselves they are 'Dutch'. No one has been able to show one single passport with that nationality.
@@Razwer Imagine having served and online losers who only know videogames start calling your navy crazy stuff. One easy fact check and new borns know the Royal Netherlands Navy exist in the real world. There is no 'Dutch marine'. He must be on some real good drugs to claim the existance of a videogame navy in the actual real world.
First I need to correct some things, the ships don't have "German" dispersion, they have Battlecruiser dispersion from T8+, "German" dispersion technically no longer exists as they now use the regular BB dispersion shared by the UK and US, only the French and Italians are still stuck with that PoS. Kijkduin and Eendracht both use Bofors guns, not German guns. Haarlem has the same guns as Hipper on paper although far worse reload and dispersion of course... Johan de Witt I have no clue what they are but the "240mm/55 QF"-designation seems to suggest maybe Brittish since as far I know nobody else use the QF or Quick-Firing designation on their guns.. and well Gouden Leuww aka Battlecruiser 1047 we all know was actually planned to use the Scharnhorst's guns from the start. Although somehow they've managed to fuck up the designs so bad they don't even match the existing blueprints with copious amounts of "creative liberties" taken. If anything if they hadn't nerfed the guns into absolute shit to make up for the dumb and unneccesary airstrike the ships ought to have been pretty decent. Edit: Forgot to add, why the fuck does Gouden Leuww have so little hp? It's supposed to be even heavier than Moskva yet somehow has like 14k less hp? The Design 1047 battlecruiser is rated at roughly ~28k tonnes standard yet Moskva AKA Projekt 66 is supposed to be something like 26k tonnes.
Dutchy here. I can’t imagine any funny stone coal English translation from Dutch for BottleSheep. Another commenter suggests it’s just a funny way of pronouncing battleship and that seems more likely. Nothing to do with a Dutch accent either, that would be more like the regular pronunciation. Or maybe he’s just a fan of the constable in ‘Allo ‘Allo.
Corrections: "PSV" is not a reference to something Dutch. It stands for "Penetrations at Sufficient Velocity", an innuendo and a reference to the online forum the clan's founding members came from. And I'm pretty sure BottleSheep is not of Dutch descent.
That is simultaneously funny and kind of disappointing. Now I have to mention that they were probably referring to Gulden's mustard. It's a meme at this point.
Yes Jingles, it is a lot like a Scharnhorst, because the Project 1047 BATTLECRUISERS were designed by the Dutch and Germans together, and were loosely based on the Schanrhorst design
I live near a city in New York called Poughkeepsie which is a Dutch name, and there are lots of small towns with the word "kill" in the name, which was the Dutch word for "creek" or "stream", like Catskill, Kaaterskill, Fishkill, etc. The state capital, Albany, used to be called Fort Orange and Fort Nassau when it was Dutch, and the forts were named after the Dutch House of Orange-Nassau. The signs of Dutch influence are pretty common throughout the state, especially near the waterways, from its Dutch colonial origins.
For the record, the PSV clan is in fact 'Penetrations at Sufficient Velocity' - not sure if they still are but AFAIK they got their start recruiting off the Sufficient Velocity forums.
It has to be the Gouden Leuww he is talking about. There is a brand of mustard here in the US called "Gulden's," and the Asashio player must have misread the name.
The video in question was an Alaska. It got hit by 3 airstrikes from a single ship. Back then the Golden Leeuw hat 3 strike that had a potential damage of 100k or so. It was absolutely crazy.
5:23 Actually jingles... that was one Gouden Leeuw. Not 3. It was 3 strikes sure, but the Gouden Leeuw got 3 strikes back then, rather than the 2 it gets now. Which kind of makes it quite justified. The cruiser was stationary sure, but it was in cover, angled, and very safe to pretty much everything else. Except for AP rockets, but we cruiser captains are already complaining about AP rockets so what's new there. Also the cruiser in question was an Alaska. I'm not making a point, I'm just being clear on what cruiser it was. EDIT: for posterity here's the clip: ua-cam.com/video/TAMn0QpdHrI/v-deo.html
Mustard ship, @Jingles, my guess is the Asashio driver is playing off the name of the dutch cruiser. There's a brand of spicy brown mustard sold in the US. The brand name is Gulden's.
go watch Flambass' video where him, MrGibbons and Trenlass in triple Gouden Leeuw division do some crazy shit vs a pair of Schlieffen, Des Moines and Gibraltar
The "mustard ship" reference is probably to a mustard called Gulden's Spicy Brown Mustard. It's a play on words of Gouden to Gulden, thus the mustard reference.
JAPANESE DESTROYER CAPTAIN is a detailed study of how the Japanese mistreated their crewmen and how the author found that not doing this greatly improved the moral and military effectiveness of his warship. On top of many other very good points are those about how to fight and, most important, how NOT to fight the US Navy, which many other Japanese captains did not heed, to their sorrow. GREAT BOOK!!!
According to Urban Dictionary, "mustard" is another slang word for "money". Money ship => Premium ship. Could be Thunderer. But the "French's Mustard" explanation along with the Richelieu being almost dead at that point makes more sense. So I'd agree with the others...
The Mustard ship was our hero's ship! " Gulden's is the third largest American manufacturer of mustard, after French's and Grey Poupon. " now you know lol
Jingles, you remember wrong, in the video where the Alaska got deleted it was attacked by three strikes of just one Gouden Leeuw. At that time the GL had 3 strikes, independly recharging from each others (like turrets), and much more damaging than now, AND the bombs had a very narrow spread: nobody can deny that version had to be nerfed. Regardless, the gimmick in itself it's stupid, it would have been better to have a more standard - and interesting - tech tree.
Dtuch Naval aviation (MLD) and air force (LVA and ML-KNIL) operated a sizeable fleet of medium bombers, chiefly B-10s and B-25s. AFAIK these were not used in conjunction with fleet action, so WG deciding to make them a weapon for Dutch ships is taking a fair bit of historical license.
Not really they just heavily nerfed the dispersion of the bomb drops because of the complaints, they used to be much tighter. Also people don't seem to understand what they should be targeting with them. The only battleships they pen well is RN as the higher tier ones only pen 40mm. They are much more effective against cruisers and ships with lightly armored decks. They are also handy for blind cap resets or resetting a ship in smoke.
Players whine when ships are OP, players bitch when ships are not OP, players moan when ships are percieved weak. No matter what they do, the playerbase will always bitch, moan and whine about a new line of ships.
The airstrike gimmick is less for damaging ships and more for controlling their movement. If you want to push a cruiser into the path of a teammates torpedo spread just drop the strike where they want to go

@@redhammer92 CVs where not bad before the rework when they had a limited number of planes. The more WG has gone away from reality the worse the game has gotten. Unlimted ammo, unlimited planes, OP AA, unrealistic gun performance and characteristics, WW2 submarines moving at 20 and 30 knots submerged, etc.
Well at least USS Houston's anti aircraft gunners gave a superb account of themselves during the ABDA battles. It's also worth mentioning that she was the last of ABDA cruisers to go down along with HMAS Perth. Now thats an idea for a future premium, USS Houston a tier 6 heavy cruiser that's got excellent AA, similar to USS Texas. Basically I can see Houston as slightly improved Pensacola, sacrificing a gun for massively improved AA and slightly improved armor or armor coverage.
Mustard Ship is a play on the name of the Golden Lion. The the Dutch word for Golden is the same as a North American Brand of Spicy Brown Mustard and perhaps other types of mustard as well. Look at the video again. There are several points where the ship's name is given in Dutch.
I'm Dutch too but had no idea that people from Dordt were called that way. Is there a specific reason in history that earned Dordtenaren this term, something from the 80 years war for example? @@Pincer88 There is a myth that back in the dark ages sheep got smuggled into the city by dressing them up as children and thus avoiding import taxes. Properly just a myth, but a funny one. The real reason is properly just the massive amounts of sheep that got sold on the markets that came from the alblasserwaard. Dordrecht used to have 'stapelrecht', meaning that all good passing through the city had to be sold there. This resulted in a massive economy, a very rich city and a lot of hate from the farmers in the alblasserwaard that could only sell their products in Dordrecht (often with massive taxes applied).
I have watched that earlier huge airstrike clip on Alaska a few times and in it you can see that the strike is performed by only one Gouden Leuuw. At that time ship had 3 strikes in one go and it did appx. 40k damage and caused 2-3 additional fires. I believe that after that, WG nerfed airstriker to level that they are today.

Paul, thank you for the book recommendation! As a USN Vet I have watched your WoW videos for years and have always enjoyed your commentary. I have also enjoyed your recommendations for reading material. As a DD man I had already read 'The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors' but until you recommended it had not read 'Neptunes Inferno' which, I found fantastic!
I also happen to be finishing a university degree in international studies and love any resources that help me understand topics outside of the American point of view; as is such, thus far 'Japanese Destroyer Captain' has been an amazing book! Thank you for sharing it! I am currently living in the UAE and may be traveling to England soon, I would be happy to buy you a beer if you have the time to spare and share some sea stories with an old Navy salt miner.
Best,
Steve
Bottleship might be a reference to a bottled ship.
A bottled ship is a model of a boat inside of a bottle which is made to look impossible to get in or out of the bottle. I think there even was one in the pirate of the carribean movies
Skip bombs are nastier than the air drop. Had a Musashi lose almost half health from a skip bomb drop. I was moving at full speed too.
I've had an Istanbul/Constantinople earworm stuck in my head since the discussion of Bottlesheep's nationality. Damn you.
Gulden is a brand of mustard. Its a stretch and its definitely not an NA server thing.
Gulden was our currency before we got the euro
I think "mustard ship" is a reference to "Gulden's" a brand of Mustard in the US. It's a play on the ship's name.
I have “Japanese Destroyer Captain!” It is in fact a very good book. Capt. Hara was very good example of a leader.
Its also frequently cited in a lot of Pacific War histories. Capt. Hara fought in many of the major sea battles (including Java Sea) with skill, honour and luck; he was also a very humble man who was not above self criticism. His book is well worth reading.
Can confirm! I read the book about a year ago, and wished I'd read it much sooner!
"Wargaming might have taken a little too much of this feedback onboard"
I'm confused, I thought the issue was that they *didn't* take feedback on board at all.
I love the Dutch captains voice overs.
They made me giggle.
They clearly care about the recent exodus of existing players just as much as they care for the new players they are gaining each day
as a dutchy myself i find this SO ENTERTAINING! hahahaha love it!
It could be a reference to a brand of mustard that I've seen in grocery stores here called Gulden's.
Its great to see the BBs at the end of the match didn't go after the DD at the end, that would've been snatching defeat from victory
Very great battle for the Richelieu, Thunderer & Gouden Leeuw. Nice video, thanks !
That book has only been around since the 1960s. Where have you been...in a bottle!?
Only channel where I don't skip the advertisement part :)
Dijon, Grey Poupon, as well as the brand French's mustard. Mustard ship = French ship.
A great battle and many lessons can be taken from it. thanks for sharing
Jingles, don't you remember that "BOTTLE SHEEP" was the name of one of the ships in WG's bathtub battle map? I do believe you're suffering from "OLDTIMER'S DISEASE"; the ability to instantly forget everything.
"The ability to instantly forget everything" sounds more like a skill acquired by age rather than a disease...
@@JustLurrKingDE If you don't think getting old is a disease, then you just ain't old enough to appreciate the facts yet. Age is the most crippling disease of all, and it gets every one of us.
Being a dutch native speaker, hearing these dutch announcements feel really weird. :)
well be envious of the upcoming german commander which will have the german voice actor of DIE HARD(even the picture of the commander reminds us of John Mclane.. the imposter).. which can be appropriate since many players do just that xD
Not to mention the voiceactor they chose also does a lot of cartoon work. It may work for kids, but it annoys the hell out of me. Such an irritating voice.
@@marcvandijk2971 Yeah, actually, now that you mention it... XD
Marine = Navy. As Jingles says in his video, some Dutchies have a weird way of speaking English ;)
@@MrFlatage Once you start worrying about keyboard warriors you may end up with heart problems. Relax and enjoy the weekend.
Gulden's Mustard. Spicy Brown, Bold Yellow, Honey Mustard, Sriracha Brown, and Stone Ground Dijon. Good game btw, well played.
Jingles, the video of Alaska getting demolished by the Air strikes was still just one GL's strikes.
Or maybe he’s just a fan of the constable in ‘Allo ‘Allo.
oooh yesss i do love an 'allo 'allo reference
Corrections:
"PSV" is not a reference to something Dutch.
Ah another ship with a beautiful name. First it was the Dunker Que and now the Gooden Glue
kill the mustard ship is a reference to the "Gouden Leeuw" - there is a brand of mustard in the usa called Gulden's
Japanese Destroyer Captain - is a GREAT book. Very interesting to see a view from the other side.
"gulden's mustard" is a popular yellow mustard here in the states so its probably a play on words with the name
As being a Dutchy mezelf I realy like the Dutch ingame commentary, kom terug for come back and torpedo's aan de rechter kant, and such..
Yes Jingles, it is a lot like a Scharnhorst, because the Project 1047 BATTLECRUISERS were designed by the Dutch and Germans together, and were loosely based on the Schanrhorst design
"BottleSheep", maybe an unusual way of saying .. "Lamb".
watching in 4K on a 240hz monitor All Mighty Jingles is superb!!!
Loving all the Dutch reverences! makes me happy
Mustard ship = Richelieu. Grey Poupon and other dijon mustard and all that.
In America we have French's mustard. The Asashio player was likely calling attention to the Richelieu.
"It's strange, and, well, a little Dutch."
Jingles, I have a feeling you and Bram Stoker would have gotten along on this topic.
GG and good replay. Thank you both!
here in the states we have a mustard that has the name of Guldens so I think he was talking about the Golden lion.
@1:53 ground his way up? nope free xp, can't fault him
Lots of Dutch also came over to America/Canada after WW2 as well. My mother's family for instance.
Mustard ship, @Jingles, my guess is the Asashio driver is playing off the name of the dutch cruiser. There's a brand of spicy brown mustard sold in the US. The brand name is Gulden's.
I see this ship being very good on Two Brothers when people run the middle.
go watch Flambass' video where him, MrGibbons and Trenlass in triple Gouden Leeuw division do some crazy shit vs a pair of Schlieffen, Des Moines and Gibraltar
The "mustard ship" reference is probably to a mustard called Gulden's Spicy Brown Mustard. It's a play on words of Gouden to Gulden, thus the mustard reference.
This
Thanks for the book recommendation...on my wish list.
I’ve had a copy of Captain Hara’s biography for decades now. Print copy that is.
Highly recommended.
Definitely a reference to Gulden's Mustard, a very popular spicy mustard brand in the US.
The Mustard ship was our hero's ship! "
Gulden's is the third largest American manufacturer of mustard, after French's and Grey Poupon.
Mustard ship is probably a play on Gulden's Mustard here in the US, referring to the Gouden Leeuw.
3 x 2 = 9. There's our jingles moment for today :D
Jingles if your thinking of the clip i'm thinking, Was an Alaska and he got dropped on by like 3 squadrons of airstrikes if i recall.
Bottlesheep was the name of the “USA” toy-boat in the april-fools or christmas special back in the early days of WoWs.
WG not listening to any feedback and producing OP ships. Dutch Cruiser: Hold my beer....
Players whine when ships are OP, players bitch when ships are not OP, players moan when ships are percieved weak. No matter what they do, the playerbase will always bitch, moan and whine about a new line of ships.
it seems they pay attention to us when they don't need to and ignore us when they should lessen to us
The airstrike gimmick is less for damaging ships and more for controlling their movement. If you want to push a cruiser into the path of a teammates torpedo spread just drop the strike where they want to go
I couldn't give a toss about the game...it seems so unrealistic, its laughable. I just enjoy JIngles' knowledge dropping. :-)
Didn't use to be. Before CVs and Subs and Russian bias, it was great.
@@gwcrispi Every time i want to go back and play i play a single game with a CV and uninstall. Everyone hates arty in World of Tanks, so why would they add a very similar class to WoW? w/e has saved me money not playing for sure.
@@adammorris1756 agree they weren't as bad but still felt crappy to play against
Well at least USS Houston's anti aircraft gunners gave a superb account of themselves during the ABDA battles.
Please try capping your framerate at 60 in-game, it's likely the cause of the audio de-sync.
If you want a good battlecruiser experience, play Alaska or the Petro. Others are cheap knock offs, including the GL.
Congrats to The Mighty Jingles on the new sponsor!
Japanese Destroyer Captain! Heyo, the recommendation I gave awhile ago! Glad you liked it!
Mustard Ship is a play on the name of the Golden Lion. The the Dutch word for Golden is the same as a North American Brand of Spicy Brown Mustard and perhaps other types of mustard as well. Look at the video again. There are several points where the ship's name is given in Dutch.
Totally agree that we Dutch are a bit weird. Also, 'sheep' is a common way to refer to someone from Dordrecht.
Speak for yourself. I don't think we Dutch are weird, it's the other 7 billion people... You're right about the Dordters though. 😂
I'm Dutch too but had no idea that people from Dordt were called that way. Is there a specific reason in history that earned Dordtenaren this term, something from the 80 years war for example? Beautiful town centre by the way! I'm from up North (Meppel of all places) and we are called mosquitos. Having Giethoorn and the Weerribben marshes nearby you can probably guess why.
There's a brand of mustard in the US called Guldens, maybe it was in regards to our Golden Lion friend here

He really is a wholesome person
I have a feeling his videos and who he is helps more people than he knows.
I agree jingles is amazing
Would love to meet him some day
I have watched that earlier huge airstrike clip on Alaska a few times and in it you can see that the strike is performed by only one Gouden Leuuw. At that time ship had 3 strikes in one go and it did appx. 40k damage and caused 2-3 additional fires. I believe that after that, WG nerfed airstriker to level that they are today.
It still does require the enemy to be camping though.
