I was invited to participate at an Art Market (?) at a local brewery in Cleveland in April. I’ve spent so much already on shit to use to display my art. I have this unrealistic (I KNOW) idea about how it’s going to look and go. They can’t tell me if it will be outside or inside, just that I get 8x8 foot space. Ugh! Getting drunk might be my ONLY option at some point. Thanks for the tips, Rafi.

Another point I would like to say is never give up on promoting your show, my wife and I was talking to someone the day before the show closed and we invited them to the show . One hour before the show closed these people brought one of my wife's paintings. So no matter how many sales you have had or if u have not sold one painting. Stay positive and keep promoting. I even sold two more photos as we were packing up . Enjoy you amazing artist .

One tip-you may not sell but you may get a commission because someone liked your style but nobody did the image what they as customers want. (That has happened to me a few times

Watching the past solo show videos and inspired -just most venues cost. The one that doesn’t cost said yes but then couldn’t get a date confirmed 😅
I don’t get how artists set up on the day with the private view looming. I’m giving myself two days because I too sweat; I need to have it all hung the day before the private view 😅🥰
I’m happy for my art to sell on the ground - this is my private show yes I know there is no art it sold while setting up 😅
Talk to you about solo show possibilities soon, I just fear I’ll spend money setting it up and while be great for being part of the art world it is a risk .
I don’t drink being ex alcoholic, so I wouldn’t serve at the show as I don’t like drunk people putting their drinks on top of my prints (it’s happened 🤦🏻‍♂️) I mean that was at craft fair stall table so on walls should be fine . Hoping people still arrive if have clever smoothies no alcohol - would want something else to entice like a band . If friends happy to do for a % of the sales and risk of free . If only I could play music myself!
The private view honestly is the thing that’s stopped me.

What do you say when people get into a long story about how thier son, neice, grandaughter, sister, cousin etc is a great artist and never went to art school talk? They usually dont have pictures of the art when I ask either. Especially when they ignore your work, dont talk to you about your work at all it feels like a subtle put down and they hog up your spot, when you could be talking to a buyer instead?

What do you recommend for a place to show work? I use to do facebook, but I had a farmville habit and had to give it up. So it has been 4 or 5 years since I've posted there. I also get a lot of weird stuff there. facebook.com/john.gronning.5 the most recent image is a painting of Iris's that I did maybe 2 years ago. I also put this on Etsy, but I really did not like how Etsy seemed to be nickle and dimming me. Charges for a post, charge for advertising.
Maybe I've just got a bad attitude about the Etsy thing.
    Thank you for your time.

      Your doing Color Field.....
Which.... obviously has a following and a market... Look at Rothko... his squares and rectangles sell for millions ....
It's so hard for me to bite my tongue on this one.
I see color field as the ultimate form of the stereo type of the pretentious artist. "The spft edges represent the strained relationship woth his father...."
      Ok... sure... cuz that's obvious.
White on white is the only color field work that I see as actually brilliant.

    • @YesItsTom2U
      @YesItsTom2U 11 місяців тому

@@SeanMahoneyfitnessandart I love Rothko and he's the reason I've started painting again. I find his work very spiritual and am trying to come up with something equally as moving when viewed. I'm playing with texture, color-shifting pigments and multiple layers of clear medium to attempt a three dimensional effect. I have a ways to go before I perfect my technique but I am achieving interesting results. Highly glossy pains suspended on a background of ultra flat black are what I'm playing with now. I wanted an opal look, but so far it looks more like dichroic glass. AS for white on white, it is something I plan to play with eventually. Ad Reinhardt did a series of white on white I absolutely loved and I even did a version using off whites and interference pigments. I had forgotten I had posted here, thanks for the comments. 🙂

I think shows are about networking and getting out of the studio and shining your light. No one knows what can become of getting out of your comfort zone of the studio. Sometimes while we think the main goal would be sales, sometimes it’s about making a connection you wouldn’t otherwise have made that ends up paying off big time.
    Energy works in mysterious ways.

Yes letting more people know you and your art exists, and who you are, what you’re about, what excites you and find out their passions and what excites them . Mutual excitement. They may not buy but years later might say I remember seeing this artists show, “oh really do they have a website or UA-cam ? “ and word of mouth spreads , community grows .

LOL Funny video Rafi! Does your wife always talk from over your shoulder?? lol It certainly pays to have a sense of humor while being an artist, that's for sure! Even in most situations other than art! Thanks for the tips! Yes, artists don't need to or shouldn't go the way of famous Italian painter Modigliani who was an alcoholic and drug addict! In fact, he and his friends other Bohemians went by a little guide book they kept in their pockets that extolled the virtues of using substances i.e. drugs/alcohol like their green Absinthe they all drank during the Bohemian days in Paris in the late 19th century/early 20th centuries! Sadly, his girlfriend and mother of his child jumped out a window to her suicide the day after he died at age 35!
Lethal substances might make you feel good in the short time, but in the long time, it consumes even one's art and all people should remember that it only compounds one's problems instead of helping them, more of a hindrance than a help! And costly as well esp these days! Artists need to keep their wits about them! And remember Van Gogh who used to eat his paint and drink turpentine only sold one painting in his lifetime to his brother Theo, an art dealer! There are great documentaries and movies about VanGogh, "Lust for Life" with the late great Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas's dad, a Hollywood icon! Watch the great film, "Modigliani" with actor Andy Garcia as Modigliani, great film! Modigliani's rival was Picasso who was also the rival of Henri Matisse whose work I love! .Also, "BIG Eyes", another great film about American painter Margaret Keene who recently passed away! I could relate to that in many ways i.e. her toxic dysfunctional malignant narc/sociopathic husband! She had also been co-dependent! Thanks for more awesome tips! Last outdoor art show I was in I was afraid my paintings were going to melt from the hot midday sun like the famous scene from a hit Twilight Zone episode, "The Midnight Sun"! lol

Really great advice. I went to an art festival and one of my all time favorite artists was there and he was a complete jerk and so stern. Yeah i broke up with him that day and refuse to buy his art since. Sad. I hope he watches this video!
