I think it's completely plausible that White sharks are ,at the least, occasional visitors to the waters around the UK & possibly Ireland. The water temperature can be just within their range (in summer) Plus they have been recorded in the Bay of Biscay which isn't really that far away as well as the fact there are large Pinniped populations, especially in Scotland.

Fantastic news regarding Osearch comin to the uk , I cant see them comin all this way and spendin 30 plus thousands a day on somthin that isnt there 🤷🏻♂️🇬🇧🦈
I think it’s great. But the areas they will be focusing in the GWS are more sporadic and it will be very unlikely they will find, but could get lucky. They need to head into the Mediterranean, near Sicily, Tunisia, or further east to Turkey. Also most likely I think the majority of GWS in the Mediterranean don’t go close to shore very often. As to where they head. I don’t think South Africa. Because from the tagged South African GWS all only made big migrations in the Indian Ocean.
Waters around the coast are only getting warmer, and with an increasing grey seal population, I don't see why a great white wouldn't be lurking around.
Well, they would be expecting you to say it was a GW because they could sell the story and add their names to history. The Med to SA is a long way, but then again, the GW's do like to travel that far with no problems. I would say that some of the Med GW's would come up here but I hope to God that they choose the quieter spots unless the GW's aren't bothered that much by shipping noise. Friends of mine, many years ago now, saw a massive shark up here near Banff when they were scuba diving, but they didn't know the species. Porbeagles are fairly common here. If you go on the trip with Osearch, they'll restrict what you can show pretty heavily until the show airs but, I would love to see as much as possible of what you film. Fishing friends have seen sharks with their teeth firmly gripping the cod end of the nets as they hauled them in. The sharks would drop off but none of them knew which species they were - they wouldn't care anyway; some of them catch whales in their nets and complain about the smell of their breath and annoyance at having to release them. I'm confused by the 'fin', in one scene it was turning sharply and later just 'moving' through the water - unless it was just a separate clip but it did look like a seal.
hard to tell from the video what that was, but i'm going with a seal too. Unless better footage is available it's difficult to confirm or deny. Good video as always
There defo still med white sharks I had a incident in the med when 10yr old I had to swim a stupid large amount of meters to get back to shore after getting intentionally abandoned at sea While swimming my legs started to bounce off of something behind me No one on the beach could see what was happening as they looked like ants But my kicking went from normal splashing no not hearing any splashing from my kicking, legs bouncing off something I didn't look back just kept on swimming God knows what it was A dolphin, a shark? A small shark a big shark God knows! But I'm still hear
You've more chance of seeing the Loch Ness Monster. I don't think you're going to find a GWS anywhere were there are not large populations of whales on migration or resident.
@@rabadabadoo491 When you've seen the great whales on migration up the east and west coasts of Australia you realise that the relatively small number around the UK coast just aren't going to attract large white sharks. I spent just 3 weeks in Margaret River, Australia and spotted a large GWS from the shore, but I've spent months all around the Scottish coast and only ever seen basking sharks and one minke, although I was lucky enough to see that sperm whale which turned up in Oban harbour. I hope GWS are found in British waters, but I just think it's an extremely remote chance.
@kw8757 minke's were a pretty regular occourance during the summer months when I worked in the North Sea. And was lucky enough to see what I think may have been a pair of humpbacks one year although I wasn't really up on sea mammals so not sure about identification. Cheers
If they find them in the North East Atlantic off Ireland, my guess would be they migrate North along the continental shelf in summer and South through the Bay of Biscay towards the coast of Morocco in winter.
Love too see you on O search it would be a great opportunity for you and the channel but I dont like the way they tag its to bulky and the stress put on the shark is too much I think but if you are there you could keep them right lol good luck mate I will keep an eye open very interesting
Interesting to get some data. I’m inclined to think unlikely to find one, eg a Mediterranean shark would have to sneak past and compete with a resident Scottish orca pod, and the pod near Gib Straits that were setting about yachts. Either way some data would be welcome. I wonder if they are tagged in UK waters, if that would increase the estimated worldwide population numbers?
You're more likely to get hit by lightning than being eaten by a great white. Jaws while entertaining was bull shit when it comes down to real life. I personally would love to see one while out surfing ✌🏻&❤️ from 🏴🏴🏴

But: just one seal and no others around? However, you are an experienced person who always lives with the sea and knows your way around. I love this channel and hope you are one of the first to see GW in UK ❤❤
You should definitely try and get on the osearch ship when they are in the Ireland area, especially after all the amazing work their organisation does and your great videos😊
it will be interesting to get genetic information from these eastern populations. it hasn't been done much, it hasn't been done recently and it hasn't been done by a group of dedicated specialists. My suspicion is that some old (or perhaps new) assumptions will be challenged.. its fascinating that Med sharks are "believed to be more closely related to central pacific animals" but how can this be, exactly ? We might find out.
Great White can regulate their body temperature but to do that they need an adequate food supply because of the energy required to keep their body temperature up. If they have regular food then there's no reason as to why they can't inhabit our waters.
The big question is why they are NOT off the UK--it has seals; it's cooler water and the gulf stream brings warmer water seasonally 'just in case'; BUT then again, Bay of Biscay has recorded only ONE ("count 'em, One") white shark caught and it was a juvenile. On the other hand, of the French and Spanish Med, and the Spanish and Portuguese Atlantic, white sharks are definitely 'on'. Makes me wonder where these sharks come from===up from South Africa? From the North American East Coast? It seems some OSEARCH tracking has shown that some head for the mid Atlantic ridge--they look like they're making a beeline for 'old bighty' but then they veer off before they cross that feature. THere MUST be some sort of magnetic track they're following.
We've got lots of seals around the UK, but not a single confirmed sighting of a GWS, so it's simply not true that where there are seals there are white sharks. I'll come back to these comments at the end of this summer to confirm yet again no confirmed sightings of GWS, if I'm wrong I'll eat my boat.
@@kw8757 No you ARE quite correct. I'm just puzzled as to why this is the case. But then again, the closest one is that one caught in Bay of Biscay nearly a century ago. AFAIK white sharks show up off of the Azores, the Canarys, the Cape Verdes and other Spanish/Portuguese Islands in the Atlantic. None of those places are known for seals, and the white sharks in the Med sure don't have seals as a staple. In any case,. the Gulf Stream brings blues and makos close to The British Isles, so there has to be SOME reason aren't 'regulars'.
ua-cam.com/video/w-k19MsY3TM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BBCEarth It was interesting that there are no official sightings. Yet we can see that the BBC saw a white shark. Does Tourism play a part in keeping the sightings under wraps. I had a friend in the Navy who saw a great white of the coast of Scotland.
@@happyandblessed5640 The BBC did not see a GWS, you didn't think the video dramatisation was actual footage did you? The divers in the boat had cameras with them yet failed to get a single picture above or below the surface. This evidence is nothing more than anecdotal.

Exactly, it's all a bunch of nonsense, these supposed "shark sightings". Every single time it's been debunked and was shown to be either another sea animal or even an inanimate object, most often it was the completely harmless basking shark. European Great Whites are in the final category before "extinct", with only 250 or less left in all of the Med or even all of the European waters. CITES, the organisation who tracks and tries to protect animals at risk of going extinct has 2 very interesting documents on European GWS, both in the Med and in the Atlantic.
The waters here are far too cold apart from the summer months. In addition to this we haven't got the food source in our waters. Yes, we have seals in the likes of Cornwall but nowhere near enough for a white shark to sustain a diet.
Are they having afternoon Tea too?! Of course with Salmon tea sandwiches . 😉😉yeah it’s amazing there are surprisingly in Europe too. There was just a great white seen in Florida by Naples seen by a shipwreck diver
With such big seal populations around the quiet waters of Scotland, how can Great Whites not visit there ? But never a sighting of a seal being taken etc , thoughts ?
Largest seal colony in Europe. I’d say there’s plenty of food. But if they do find one there won’t be many tagged, 1 or 2 max I think. Italy is the place to go to find them
I thought that there have been some credible sightings around the Isle of Skye by marine biologists. General thoughts are that you get the odd one following the Gulf Stream.

Thank you for the video, your looking well buddy, and thank you for letting us know the dates for the oceaech expedition I've been looking forward to this since you first mentioned it☺️! I like sea wolf to buddy take care☺️😉🌊
I think you’d be crazy not to take Ocearch up on the offer! Definitely do it! If not for us and UA-cam then at least do it for yourself mate, you deserve it.
The lighting in this one is ace! What a moody scene 😲
I’m currently in the States the other day I was at Pier 39 at fisherman’s wharf San Francisco, well scary to think what comes through to take the sea lions.I would jump at the chance if I was offered a space on there ship, you should jump at the chance to network and it would be great for the channel. If you don’t do it someone else will mate.
As always fabulous content buddy
Nice one Shark Bait, enjoyed it. They must be near our southern shores due to the seal population increasing every year. Look forward to the next instalment.
You should absolutely try to get a ride along. It's a once in a lifetime chance. Can you take me on an oversized case 😊... Been following osearch for many years now... It's great to see they are finally coming over the Atlantic.
Came across a few Basking sharks off the Isle of wight whilst sailing my 36 ft yacht across to the channel Isles and boy they made my boat seem very small.
I live and surf in Jersey in the Channel Islands, and you are scaring the crap out of me 😊
Great content always…
Can’t wait to see what these guys can find….
Lydia caught my attention a few years ago and i would regularly look for her Satelite tracking data..................now you have my attention and ive subscribed.
Have you seen the video from north wales yesterday? Looks like a great white
mate, no fucking way would I be in a blow up boat floating around if the water looked like that in Aus, overcast, millpond conditions, that shit looks sharky as fuck
They always visit Cornwall periodically... every few years there’s a flurry of sightings and then they go away again...
Thank you Matt definite seal no Caudal fin.Lets hope you get on board 🦈💙
Waters around the coast are only getting warmer, and with an increasing grey seal population, I don't see why a great white wouldn't be lurking around.
Very interesting news, how calm the sea is around you l can imagine a big fin breaking the water 😳, tfs Julie
Cant wait to see what they find, if yiu are given the opportunity you should go! I would. 👍
Fingers crossed!
I have seen seals do that very thing sleeping while floating they can look fin like but if you watch they never float in a straight line .
The last 'Great White Shark' spotted off Goring-by-Sea tuned out to be 'just a pipe'.
hard to tell from the video what that was, but i'm going with a seal too. Unless better footage is available it's difficult to confirm or deny.
Good video as always
Do you think they will bring the ship to Scotland? They have a very big seal population there. Yes! You should definitely go onboard the Ocearch ship.
I would think so
Great vid again! ❤
Hope I can you the expedition for a day!
I hope so too!
There defo still med white sharks
I had a incident in the med when 10yr old
I had to swim a stupid large amount of meters to get back to shore after getting intentionally abandoned at sea
While swimming my legs started to bounce off of something behind me
No one on the beach could see what was happening as they looked like ants
But my kicking went from normal splashing no not hearing any splashing from my kicking, legs bouncing off something
I didn't look back just kept on swimming
God knows what it was
A dolphin, a shark? A small shark a big shark
God knows! But I'm still hear
Wow I bet that was scary. Probably better you didnt look back, and yes you're lucky to still be here
This could be great, let's hope the make it to Scotland.
Cheers 🍻
Fingers crossed!
You've more chance of seeing the Loch Ness Monster. I don't think you're going to find a GWS anywhere were there are not large populations of whales on migration or resident.
@@kw8757 used to see Minke's every summer 🐳
Makes sense. Very possible 🦈👍
Yes definitely a seal head for that shark sighting,
Sharks are mysterious and stealthy, you never know what they are really doing
followed you for a while, im looking forward to the day its confirmed but it'll ruin my sea sports, i watched jaws as a child!
You're more likely to get hit by lightning than being eaten by a great white. Jaws while entertaining was bull shit when it comes down to real life. I personally would love to see one while out surfing ✌🏻&❤️ from 🏴🏴🏴
They are in Croatia aswell.Last great white attack was back in 2008 pn island of VIS in Croatia.Last couple of months there were allot of great white sighting more than ever actually.Strange activities something is happening...
But: just one seal and no others around? However, you are an experienced person who always lives with the sea and knows your way around. I love this channel and hope you are one of the first to see GW in UK ❤❤
Definitely take the opportunity to go! 👍
They have always been in British waters. The water temperatures are perfect.
No proof
@@rawdog314 Common sense.
@@PurebloodStalker that makes no sense.
@@rawdog314 Are you, simple?
@@PurebloodStalker think that should be my question for you? There hasn't been ONE verified case of a white shark in British waters, fool.
I’m gonna need a bigger boat!😮
😂🦈🫣
You should definitely try and get on the osearch ship when they are in the Ireland area, especially after all the amazing work their organisation does and your great videos😊
I remember lat great white sighting in Italy was near Rimini in 1998 😅😅😅😅😅 ,since that date no one ever was catched or Tagged or sighting
Great news 👍
TA Fishing has caught a good number of Sharks and used to stay all night out shark fishing.. alone in a little boat A wilson Flyer...
it will be interesting to get genetic information from these eastern populations. it hasn't been done much, it hasn't been done recently and it hasn't been done by a group of dedicated specialists. My suspicion is that some old (or perhaps new) assumptions will be challenged.. its fascinating that Med sharks are "believed to be
more closely related to central pacific animals" but how can this be, exactly ? We might find out.
I hope you go with osearch too👍🦈
Great stuff👌👍👍👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Theyve been here forever 👌
Great White can regulate their body temperature but to do that they need an adequate food supply because of the energy required to keep their body temperature up. If they have regular food then there's no reason as to why they can't inhabit our waters.
Great video and honest title? @6:00
There was a tagged great white 500 miles off the west coast of Ireland. Think this was a couple of years ago.
Yes you 100% need to go with them that’s a lifetime opportunity please cover it.
All that tech to find where Sharks go.
Where there's seals they'll be sharks.
Those big fishes get hungry.
In any case,. the Gulf Stream brings blues and makos close to The British Isles, so there has to be SOME reason aren't 'regulars'.
ua-cam.com/video/w-k19MsY3TM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BBCEarth
It was interesting that there are no official sightings.
I believe they are here.once theyproveit I'll be the first to post on the locker channel told u so lol
Yes, he’s something else that fella, not only for his shark comments, but his belittling men’s mental health like he’s some sort of voice on the matter. He wouldn’t survive in modern day military / emergency services with that macho outdated attitude.
@@AirbornePirates touche buddy...now heres another issue u heard of tunny fishing it was big rich mans sport on east coast...big tuna shoals attract big sharks that is fact...they go hand in hand..tunas are a big powerful fish i think the uk record is something over 1000lbs and they are not apex so lets see what ocearch comes up with when they visit.
I think I speak for everyone when I say a massive YES to you going onboard Ocearch if the offer remains!!! Keep up the great work!
PS.... Yep, Defo a seal bottling, no chance that was a Shark! UK hysteria is off the charts!
I agree mate! Cheers 👍
They're also active in Italy mind you.
Great White Shark Tour see you soon 😅
Rock n Roll😅
Yes get on the Osearch
Ive been a beach lifeguard in Cornwall fot 17 years never seen a shark in shallow water. Seen wales dolphins turtles sunfish baskingsharks. Never seen a great white.
Its a shame they're not coming to north/south coast of Cornwall. They're definitely here even if as an infrequent visitor.
With such big seal populations around the quiet waters of Scotland, how can Great Whites not visit there ? But never a sighting of a seal being taken etc , thoughts ?
Oops, I was wondering why I was getting notifications from someone called 'Airborne Pirates.'
Good to see you back mate.
Thanks yes changed the name a few videos ago! Islander outdoors was getting bombarded with spam
Mediterranean sea close to Sicily italy they migrate there as well pups were caught in Turkish waters🥰
I think they head for Ireland then scotland in the peak summer then work their way down south Wales cost down to the med
I will go with you I didn't know there was mayko sharks in British waters but I think it will be a good thing for our waters
Oh yes, short fin Atlantic mako and they’re not small either
As a marine biologist, I would not get carried away. Whales get lost in the Thames. No food structure to support them in the first place
Seal 👍
Navy seal? 🤷🏻♂️
It is hard to see because you have no reference to something solid to see if it's travelling, I do hate news papers trying to get every 1 to freak out that a shark has been spotted, I believe ppl just want to know out of curiosity and the info around the prospect
There's plenty of food in the English channel for them!
