  • New Rubicon Steel Rear Bumper Install on JL Wrangler. On this video we install a Rubicon steel rear bumper on my 2018 JL Jeep Wrangler. I like this bumper because it retains my backup sensors and license plate location. I also like how it now matches up with my Rubicon high clearance fenders, so no more funny gap with the plastic Sport bumper. We did run into a couple challenges but came up with some good solutions. Overall I’m really happy with this new addition to the Jeep!

    I hit the same snag, moving to the rubicon bumper pretty much everyone who had plastic will need those carriage bolts to hold the bumper properly. Just did this install recently.

    Dude I ordered the steel bumper option when I ordered my JLUR
    Even though I saw on UA-cam other JL owners getting body damage from the rear bumper. I was like oh it won’t happen. Guess what it’s a real thing after coming down a ledge at Valley of the moon I hit a rock with the bumper and the bracket on the inside of the corner crushed into the body tub. The design is flawed The bumper is way to close to the body. I guarantee it will cause damage. I ordered an LoD rear bumper that can take a hit. If your not doing any hard trails or rock crawling you will be ok. Good luck I really enjoy your channel

      Thanks man for watching, yeah I figure if it happens I’ll address it. I got this bumper second hand pretty cheap so I’ll run it until I find an aftermarket one I like. I really like the Cavfab full width bumper but I don’t really want to run the plate on the tire carrier. Maybe something like the Rebel Off-road bumper with the plate in the JK position, we’ll see.

    Thanks for this, my bumper only came with how to install, nothing good for removing existing. BTW, that thing floating above the sensor was tripping me out LOL 9:45

    Thanks for the video. It helped me a lots. You bought your carriage bolts 7/16) at Ace hardware? I could find any 7/16 carriage bolts at Homedepot or McClendon. They only have 5/16 . I also live in Washington

    A brief shot of some rubber plugs. Did those come with the bumper? I got a bumper with parking sensors, but I don't have them. I might wire up some lights, but not right now.

      I don’t believe they come with the bumper, you can probably find them at a local hardware store with a little trial and error. Let me know if you have any more questions, thanks for watching the video!

    Hey man, I have a question, I’m in a similar position, bought mine second hand and just got the bumper, my question is did you re use those side brackets from the sport? Or did you had to buy new ones? Thanks!

      Thanks for watching Hector, my bumper came with the Rubicon plastic end caps already on it. I do have Rubicon fenders so everything lined up, I have seen people just run them without the plastic so that’s an option. Hope this helps, good luck on your build!

    I installed this bumper on a 2019 MOAB. Upgrade from a plastic bumper. Now I'm currently sourcing the bezels and brackets for the sensors. I noticed you have one bracket X4 for the sensors, is that true? Is that preferred or does it matter? Also for underneath the bumper for the two bolts doesn't matter what size? Do you or any of you really needs messages know of incaps that are slimmer to line up with the Sahara version of Moab of the fendar flares?

      I ordered my stuff from Quadratec and the outside brackets are side and position specific. The inner retaining clips are all the same. I just used whatever carriage bolts fit from my local hardware store. As far as the end caps, I just took them off I don’t think anyone makes ones that will work. Let me know if you have any more questions, thanks for watching!

      @@FROSTBITEOFFROAD thank you I ordered all the parts from the dealer because quadratic charges phenomenal prices coming to Hawaii, over $100 for these little parts. The two bolts holes under my vehicle seem to be threaded. So I am wondering if maybe I could just find the right bolt to thread into it. Guess I'll have to do some trial and error with my local hardware shop. Thank you.

    How’s it going. Do you recommend disconnecting battery to avoid any faulty codes ??

    • @FROSTBITEOFFROAD
      @FROSTBITEOFFROAD  2 роки тому +1

      It’s not necessary for a bumper install, the new Jeep’s have two batteries so it’s kinda a pain to disconnect both, just something to be aware of. Hope this helps, thanks for watching Alex!

    Thank you for the video it’s been amazing! My question is, the brackets that hold the sensor in on the back, how did you get those on? They’re tough. Already broke one. Also, the dealer gave me 4 different part nine era for those. I see you only have 4 of the same. Is that accurate? Thanks in advance

    • @FROSTBITEOFFROAD
      @FROSTBITEOFFROAD  Рік тому

      All the part numbers I used in the video worked great, if you order the ones I purchased you shouldn’t have any issues. Those retaining clips are a little weird but it just takes a little patience and they’ll go together just fine. Let me know if you have any more questions, thanks for watching the video Katherine!

      @@katherinebeach7597 correct, the housing for each sensor is a different part number but the retaining clips were all the same.

    why you replace park bezels? it's not reusable from old plastic bumper? and another one question, you got this steel bumper already with sockets under park sensors or someone drill it? thx

    • @FROSTBITEOFFROAD
      @FROSTBITEOFFROAD  3 роки тому

      The plastic bumper uses a different style bezel that’s fused into the plastic bumper, you do need to replace them with the steel bumper bezels to make them work correctly. My bumper was used off a Rubicon that came with the sensors as well, so I didn’t have to drill anything. I did look for a long time to find one that would be as simple as possible to swap. Thanks for watching!

    Hi can you let me know the wiring harness who stick on the body not on the rear steel bumper please
    Because I just buy rear steel bumper with parking sensor on it
    And the wiring harness is different
    So the parking sensor not working
    Until I have to change the wiring harness
    Thank you

    • @FROSTBITEOFFROAD
      @FROSTBITEOFFROAD  3 роки тому

      I had the backup sensor package on my Jeep already so just swapping the harness over was all I had to do. In your case I imagine it’s a lot harder to implement the swap, just because the wiring you have is only for the plate light and not for the sensor harness. I would look at the Jeep forums and see if anyone has done the swap before and then go from there. You might be able to get the harness from the dealership and have them flash the computer to make it work.

    Nice video thanks.
    Where did you buy the bumper from? I'm in Australia and my dealer says they can't order my Rubicon with steel rear bumper (with sensors). Only without sensors.
    Is the one you bough a Jeep or Mopar brand? Can you share the model number or link to where you purchased it?
    Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! :)

      Thanks for watching the video! I bought mine second hand off a guy here locally. I did have to look for awhile to find one that had the holes for the sensors. From what I can tell all the major online retailers only sell the ones without the holes and state that you will have to drill your own. Too bad shipping is probably outrageous from the US to Australia.

    I am doing this exact same project. Is it essential to order those new sensor retaining brackets and external bezel housing or can you just reuse the ones from the plastic bumper?

    • @FROSTBITEOFFROAD
      @FROSTBITEOFFROAD  10 місяців тому +1

      The brackets are necessary for the swap, the plastic ones are molded into the bumper. It’s important to note which sensor went where to avoid an issues after the install. Hope this helps, thanks for watching the video!
