Family of 4 take on snorkelling the National Marine Park in Puerto Morelos on the Mayan Riviera!

Our oldest daughter got a snorkel for Christmas from Santa, thanks big fella! She took too it very fast and was swimming laps in the pool at our condo no problem. So we decided she was ready to try a snorkelling tour in the ocean.
What better place than in Puerto Morelos on the Great Mayan Reef. The second largest barrier reef in the world and the largest living reef system in the world.
At first I thought maybe just father & daughter would head out for the two 45min. snorkelling excursion with Wet Set Diving Adventures. But after reading the website and seeing they offer a family snorkelling tour with minimum age of 2, we thought the whole family should go!
So we made our way down to Wet Set, geared up and hoped aboard the little charter boat! It’s a quick boat ride out to the reef, then we jumped over board! And oh man were we in for a surprise! The current was crazy strong due to strong winds that day.
Our oldest daughter was swimming the hardest she could and had trouble keeping up with the group. The youngest daughter doesn’t like getting her face wet so happily bobbed along hanging onto the guides floatation device. After seeing many fish our oldest could not keep up anymore under her own power and grabbed onto the floaty.
My wife decided to turn back with the kids cuz they were tiring out even while holding on to the floaty. As she made her way back to the boat the current pushed her past and the driver had to throw a rope to her while she shouted to the oldest “swim as hard as you can!”
All the while the dad (me) was finishing off the last bit of reef exploration which included a nurse shark encounter, a sea turtle encounter, and an encounter with a school of barracuda!
We all met up again on the boat safe and happy with a delicious chocolate granola bar and cup of fresh water to satisfy our tired bodies.
After such a surprisingly exhausting yet fun snorkelling tour we were glad we didn’t attempt the two 45min. tours with our oldest as it would have been too much!
All in all we highly recommend a snorkelling tour on the Great Mayan Reef, consider the Wet Set Diving Adventures crew for your adventure but maybe reconsider the min. age of 2 unless they are very strong swimmers!
