well, i just watched a few clips of James Garner driving in "Rockford Files" that Firebird looked great & Mr. Garner did some awesome driving. uma big fan of tha reverse 1-80s!!
I like the front end on those years. My brother had a black 77 TA he bought new and kept it 17 years. I wish they could have kept Pontiac alive. I think naming all their cars G something didn't help.
Ooooo! YESSSSS! A Rockford car! It doesn't get any cooler than that! Okay - I guess that's debatable but still, I loved the cars they used on The Rockford Files and of course, I loved that show a lawt! My fave one was the 1978 Pontiac Firebird Esprit. Still, I would take any one of the models used in a heartbeat. I rate this one., 5 Phone Rings and 3 Hands Up and two Thumbs up!
Jim is a cool guy.I have conversed with him a few times over on the Yahoo Group site for The Rockford Files. He also has a cool blog on the web devoted to TRF with some cool stuff.

Only the first season (1974) cars were Firebird Esprits....from the second season to series' end, they used 1975-78 Firebird Formulas because they had a handling suspension and were available with the Trans Am's standard engine as an option (400 Pontiac for 1975-76, 403 Oldsmobile in 1977-78). The Formulas had the rear spoiler removed, and the dual-scoop hood was replaced with a regular Firebird hood; they were then painted a special shade of gold.
Well I cried. Everyone's Dadloved the show and James Garner. I had a 1981 Firebird Esprit 270 HSP V-6. I had the same interior package, brown dash and tan interior but cloth. It was christened by my bff Ed who in a double date watching Valley Girl 1983 at Drive End when he spilled a bottle of red wine in the back seat. Simply put: End Buick and Vring back Pontiac...Bucks don't build excitement. Sadly GM lost its 😇 halo at the end of the 1970's. They would ultimately turn out clunkers except the pick-ups!

I just watched a funny episode of the Rockford Files where he was driving this same year Firebird. They did a quick cut away, then showed the car turning a corner, but to my surprise is was a 1975 bird, not the 77-78 shown earlier. It was strange that I was the only one in the room that noticed this editing mistake. I wonder why? LOL 😂
Maybe I missed it, but what about the vehicle has been replicated? Its an Esprit with mostly original buckskin gold paint, which was an available color in 77. While I dont recall any of the Rockford cars equipped with the formula steering wheel, it was an option on the base, Esprit and Formula models. Sweet ride!!

Im a big fan of the color birds- with the Sky Bird being my favorite. The Esprit was offered at the onset of 2nd generation production, the Berlinetta didnt arrive until 1979. Youre correct though, they were both marketed as the 'luxury' F-bodies. Specific breakdowns on the non performance birds generally werent tracked- I have yet to see any breakdown on how many of the color birds were produced. Hard to say what what Esprit is the rarest, but Id say 70-74 Esprits with the optional low compression 400 could certainly challenge for the rarest. The catch with that option was it required the THM 400-and that made it a somewhat pricey option. I happen have an original '71 with the 400- and while no factory breakdown of how many came with the 400 exists, Ive been told by a reliable source that approximately 5% of Esprits were equipped as such.
@blh7068 71F-bird- Yes, the equivalent 2nd gen Camaro would have been the Type LT which started production in 1973, the Berlinetta superseded the Type LT in 1979 and lasted through 1986.
Hi! Can you ask Jim whee I can get a Vista group GMC truck poster with James Garner? He is leaning on the side of a red step side and the caption on the bottom reads, "we are the famous truck people." Thanks!!!!

The studio bought Formula Firebirds and made Esprits out of them. They used a unique, non-GM gold color, and they had the big engine and suspension from the Formula. Saying this is a Rockford Firebird is not really accurate.

I recently learned that Pontiac did not offer the Rockford gold color on their Firebirds. It was a color developed by the makers of the show. So if the paint is original, it's not quite correct. Needs the correct steering wheel as well. But it looks really nice.
Hi rogermurph101, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, and happy to read you thought this one looks really nice. Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
Also, with the exception of the first 5-6 episodes, the cars Garner drove from that point on were Formulas that were badged to look like Esprits. It was quickly discovered that a better handling model was required, but they wanted to keep the boulevard look the Esprit offered.
My Firebird is painted in the original GM color buckskin. The closest color they offered that year to the Rockford color. The color of Rockford's Firebird is solar gold, a stock 1964 Cadillac color. For more info of the show and the Firebirds check out my blog; jimsuva.typepad.com. I also have the correct steering wheel, but I like the Formula wheel better. Also since it was filmed for Pioneers of Television episode with the Formula wheel, why change it.
The pilot and most of the 1st season they used Esprit's. You are correct when they got the 1975 models they were Formulas dressed to look like the Esprit's, but no badges. Because of the Formula suspensions Garner could now do his j-turn.
Jim Suva I prefer that steering wheel in the T/A, but the standard wheel in this style Firebird. I also prefer your dash to the simulated turned steel dashes in the T/A-Formula, but that would probably look weird. Question for you, if you know the answer. The grab bar on the passenger side; is that a Firebird only item? I notice they aren't present in any Trans Ams I've seen.
Not to take away from the greatness of this, but Holly crap look what its sitting next to, a 77' can AM! the last of the GTO's! and the last performance pontiac before rodger smith sunk the brand.

Love the Firebird Esprit (all years). Still recall a 1981 'ruby red metallic' Formula (don't recall the actual color designation) with silver leather along with the 301 turbo and fully loaded w/t-tops at the local dealership. Dreamed of owning it - hoping it found a good home! :)
Not a bad replica, but you have to replace that Chevy 305 with the Olds 403 that they were installing at the time in the real Rockford Files Firebirds.

They used stock footage when Jim was driving the Firebird to add to the episode.
All that stock footage saved a lot of money. That is why all of Rockford's cars were the same color.

The Pontiac Firebird Esprit was there version of the Chevrolet Camaro Berlinetta. The rarest versions are: Red Bird, Yellow Bird and the Sky Bird.
Hmmm, I'll keep a look out for those cars, Lou

Steering wheel not correct. Also formula package was used. Color was not a GM gold but a color props dept came up with.
Hi michael morine, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
