Even pakistanis have better daily soaps than indians.
Gone are the days when there was real comedy on the tv. sarabhai, khichdi, hum paanch, dekh bhai dekh used to run and be appreciated. Even news channels are garbage.
The only indian channels worth watching are RSTV, LSTV and the EPIC channel.
Pakistanis don't have soaps.. They have shows or rather series which is a self-contained story wrapped up in a certain number of episodes... Only India has soap operas...that last a lifetime...

the thing about indian television is most shows start with a good note and idea but it all ends up with similar plot and dragged storyline ( if there is any ).
Zakir Khan once explained it perfectly.... There are deadlines.... No one has time and patience for masterpiece...and mediocrity becomes part of the industry....

everything yku mentioned was bang on. I would like to add though, Tarak Mehta ka ulta chasma has been "adopted" from a column in gujrati magazine called 'Chitralekha' by writer Tarak Mehta which was genuinely funny and great but as always tv industry has ruined it now...😢😢

I attended Jhalak dikhala last yr where we we're forced to clap every 2 secs..and if the securities found us not clapping they would threaten us to leave the show..so this forced appreciation is very common in reality shows..as varun said..no loo breaks..we left the show midway..
Well although not right, the forced laughter from crowd is a worldwide phenomenon. Even in shows like Ellen, Tonight show with jimmy fallon etc. have signs which come on saying " APPLAUD ". So it's not only in India
Indian television wasn't always that bad. I remember good tv shows while growing up like Khichdi, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. That was some good comedy by good actors. Plus, pretty original
Yeah! It was actually becoming better with those shows and then it just went downhill from the time they stopped.
India has produced some of the best comedy shows on earth. Sadly something went wrong within the last decade.

In Friends, the writers gave every character the equal no. of punch lines or comebacks. Chandler was most sarcastic because that was his 'only' thing.
Indian TV shows are way behind anything.
Watch the Pakistani TV serials on Zindagi, they END.
Sarabhai vs sarabhai was super. Also 24 is pretty thrilling too. So that's 2 out of the n number of shows that have been produced to date. That's a sorry state for Indian TV.

No wonder EPIC is languishing on Sidelines, and might be scrapped anytime soon for lack of viewership. Indians have lost any taste for quality things.

In times of india they raised the same question and the answer they came up with that indian tv serves the lowest common denominator which is mainly aunties .....they also compared the shows that killed in 90s with today's shows ex dekh bhai dekh , filmy chakkar , etc .......also the last great show in indian tv was sarabhai vs sarabhai and that was declared flop.
nitish munshi ya man filmy chakkar was awesome show of satish shah and no body in my friends mentions that you're the first person to point it.
im very stoned and that insight on why the drunk daadi character being played by a man is a safer bet just blew my mind. The Big Question is my favourite munchie!

Sarabhai v Sarabhai is probably the only Indian sitcom one could actually watch with ease.
Back in the time we used to watch Malgudi days... ab Bhabhi ji gharpar he... Rajiv Shrivastav, Ehsaan Qureshi, Sunil Pal, VIP, Naveen Prabhakar were our daily fav comedians... Shekhar Suman's show, And best was Cartoon Network wala Nippon ka Ramayana jisme Shatrughan Sinha ka aawaz tha.... Today we cannot watch AIB or EIC or SNG videos with our parents like we used to Comedy Circus or such shows or dance show like Boogie Boogie watch
In 3rd part, pls say something about CID, Saavdhaan India and all the serials running all day long. Also, the Hindi news channel's reporting style! Please!

You have very well explained production point of view. Please talk more about the consumer (us indian TV viewers) and why we continue to buy into this horrible, mind-numbing product. I believe its because of lack of exposure to good quality content which is changing gradually. Maybe we need dubbed shows to kickstart it all?

Well we have almost a dozen hindi GECs , each one of the channels say airs half a dozen prime time shows, so that would be around 70-75 shows and they all are more or less the same. No surprise Saathiya or Simar turn out to be winners.
Need Part-2....and also discuss on some good shows like Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, if you feel they are.
This was a good discussion. Though giggles and laughs aside, wanted to hear Kautuk go further into depth of the process to get a better feel of the industry. Being an outsider we would seriously like to learn more how industry works, how finance works, how talent resourcing works, such that giving opportunity for indpendent content producer to learn and emerge!? Your thoughts!

Sumit sambhal lega is one of the best indian tv series. I remember it watching with my family and appreciate it about it comedic timing.

Love this podcast. One of the best in youtube. You guys should do it more often.. and Kautuk (might be I spelt it wrong, sorry) you could do with being a little more spontaneous (though you are good). Really like Varun and Karan's ease and Aadar's laugh just at anything :D Great job.

There's always this question bugging my mind, that why there aren't any video games created by India based companies and the ones they make are the game versions of the upcoming films like gajhini,dhoom 3,krrish3 and these are just basic cellphone games with shitty graphics and sort of Temple run version games. Why aren't there console games. I always wish there should be a GTA version of Mumbai or any major city. Like you choose your character based on religion and if you kill any other religion gamebots, there will be riot in the complete city. Although hearing this may someone will delete my comment but atleast its a point worth to ponder upon. Am I right!?!?
