For those who are, for whatever reason, lacking in the understanding of satire, the reason this REALLY works is that Colbert built up the tension with the right-wing psychobabble you often hear on AM radio concerning Hollywood liberalism. That tension comes crashing down with the fervent statement I LOST TO BARRY MANILOW! THAT'S why this bit works. It reminds you that everyone, even Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity--or, for the sake of political balance, Randy Rhodes and Nike Malloy--are just performers looking for an award to feel validated. This is intelligent satire, and it's unfortunately lost on a few generations of Americans dummied down by the very thing these two are presenting awards for: Reality TV.
Absolutely true, and what sells it is both the writing and their performance. I find Stewart's discomfort after declaiming, "Award show banter is not pablum!" nearly as funny as Colbert's anguish, though the later gets punched up by the shots of people in the audience who are just losing it.

Sometimes I think American humor has gone all to hell - based these days almost always on fat, dressed-down, low-life idiots with their crude schoolboy jokes, and sex and bodily functions. It makes me long for a Nichols and May skit. But then I watch these two guys and I realize that subtlety, elegance, articulate, intelligent satire, literacy, dressed-up dignity, and three-dimensional wit are not only alive and well - but still even widely appreciated. Bless you, Jon and Stephen.
It will be a dark day for satire when Colbert retires his character and starts hosting The Late Show. The genius of these two all-too-short minutes is a testament to that. Nearly every line pre-Manilow has enough meat to be dissected and discussed on its own, and Stewart plays the straight perfectly. Instant classic.
I love the Rightwingers who say they "totally miss the old Stephen Colbert"...who mocked the Fox News and Rightwing podcast/radio hosts that they listen to....and apparently think he was serious.
I knew a lot of people back in the Colbert Report days who followed him and thought he was serious. I always fucking made me laugh my ass off when I would hear him agreeing with them not knowhing he was mocking them. The far right aren't a very bright bunch of people.

Jean-Francois Charbonneau 1) no one needs an explanation of the fuckin joke. 2) "I wasn't explaining a joke, I was deconstructing how they made this award sketch." That sounds stupid, "I wasn't explaining, I was deconstructing." Not only do you attempt to deconstruct in your comment, you also attempt to provide a shitload of "EXPLANATIONS." 3) "You can say that it's because it's not funny, I have another opinion on the matter." no FUCKIN SHIT Captain Obvious. 4) Listen to the crowd? half the people there are dumbasses, i'm pretty sure there's a bunch of "laughing w/o knowing why" idiots there.
and there's a fuckin deconstruction of your comment, douchebag. Oh wait, nevermind, it was an EXPLANATION. no wait...
Non Existent Someone didn't receive enough hugs when they were little did they?
Jon Stewart's impact on everything cannot be over stated.
Colbert is so funny I swear!
HE'S GOT CLAWS FOR hands
Sometimes I think American humor has gone all to hell - based these days almost always on fat, dressed-down, low-life idiots with their crude schoolboy jokes, and sex and bodily functions. It makes me long for a Nichols and May skit. But then I watch these two guys and I realize that subtlety, elegance, articulate, intelligent satire, literacy, dressed-up dignity, and three-dimensional wit are not only alive and well - but still even widely appreciated. Bless you, Jon and Stephen.
John Oliver? Bo Burnham?
I think maybe all DivineSimply does is watch Family Guy and makes assumptions based on a crude humour show that that's the way all Americans act.
Murica'
I agree on the dressed down part.
i want martin-lewis stuff back
Conan’s jab at Fox has aged tremendously well
Too bad Colbert doesn't do all his characters anymore.
He can't reasonably argue with corporate lawyers that he owns his face and name.
It made me so happy when Colbert report Colbert showed up on the late show. I wish he did more. And more Jon too.
I watch this once a week. Beyond funny.
It will be a dark day for satire when Colbert retires his character and starts hosting The Late Show. The genius of these two all-too-short minutes is a testament to that. Nearly every line pre-Manilow has enough meat to be dissected and discussed on its own, and Stewart plays the straight perfectly. Instant classic.
you americans are... so lucky to have these two, together! even they are friends!
I like how Jon is trying not to laugh. Jon let Stephen shine here. Two Legends. I also liked Conan calling Fox News what it is, Fake News.
I love how the Emmys give out an award for reality tv by having the two presenters insult it, and the applause by real actors and writers, etc.
i loved donald sutherland just laughing his ass off when Colbert said i lost to the copa cabana
I love how they get more similar to each other when they're together. That "He has claws for hands" was so jon stewart-esque
Whenever I need a light hearted good laugh I come here.
modern day prophets
these two are awesomness !...
@@Void84276 Remember, these are the people being told just these past few weeks that Fox News hosts in COURT EVIDENCE are admitting they lie to their audience just to keep them tuned in....
and the audience STILL (in the majority) trusts and believes Fox News and its hosts.
Harrison Ford laughing is everything
This is why I watch Colbert! Brilliant!
two smartest gentleman in show business
Chang Chris and they both seem genuinely decent. Like just good, solid, ethical people.
"fake news" is already on the lexicon since 2007 wow
