- The last time the American Falls were shut down was in 1969 for repair of the same two pedestrian bridges that are now being considered for demolition.

I know that we already limit the Falls to 10% of their capacity to keep erosion as slow as possible, but it's still amazing that we're able to switch off a natural wonder like that.
My father works at the power authority. One time a while back, a man was going to try and canoe over the falls, and in an attempt to save the man’s life, every dam on both the American and Canadian side diverted as much water as possible, and it nearly drained the falls as you see in this video.

I've been to Niagara Falls ONCE in my life. And it was during this time when the falls were 'turned off'.
I remember my mom telling me... _"Remember this, because it will never been seen like this again."_

Great place, added to the beauty is all the lore, tales of people trying to conquer the falls in some contraption. Seeing the images of the time when the entire falls froze and with this video seeing the rocks and the edge of the falls while the river is diverted is also amazing.
From the Falls, but live in the Florida panhandle (Pensacola first, now Panama City) since retiring from the Navy in 1988. When this happened I was stationed at the Naval Hospital Philadelphia and was unable to come home, sorry that I missed it. Recently found some old slides of my parents took and they were there when they opened the Coffer Dams to let the water flow again.
I wish we had footage of the november 1969 dynamite release from upstream! Now THAT would be cool.

Kinda baffles me that there wasn’t more footage of it. I’d like to have seen the beginning of them damming up the falls too.
@@Taima:... there is some footage of the construction of the cofferdam, I've seen some of it, I'm afraid I can't provide a link, but it is out there, I'm sure Google will know...! 👍

Was home for the 50th Class Reunion of NFHS Class of 1964 in September of 2014. Was saddened by the supports of the old bridges and understand that they plan to shut the water again to make the repairs. Hope to make it home when or if they shut them down again.
This so so fascinating! I had been there 2 years before with my family when I was 7 wish we could have seen this!

We lived 4 miles upstream and went to see it plugged. We got some pennies from a workman that had 2 buckets of them so yea they got them and I got yours.
In a few 1,000 years, the falls will become a class 5 rapids.

@@KevAlberta it’s already been reinforced, and will still turn into rapids in about 15,000 years. Just much more slowly than before. It only loses about 4 inches of height per decade, which is nice.
And i thought they would find skeletal remains of Jimmy Hoffa.
He wasn't dead yet. He disappeared in 75. They could look now. :-)

Would there by any gold at the bottom of the waterfall?
There were hundreds and hundreds of coins, all over the river bed, particularly in the shadow of the footbridge that leads from goat Island to luna Island. I don't think many, if any were actually gold, I've feeling they were currency coins, thrown in and the person may then have "made a wish"
@@michaelrawson6261 I'm not talking about coins lol. Rivers are a good place to find gold, and gold normally gets deposited at the bottom of waterfalls.
Seems freaky to stop a force of nature like that.

They didn't stop it. They diverted it. It just flowed over to the Horseshoe Falls side of the island.

@@aslmad1 When it's cleaned up, the falls on the American side will look dramatic and beautiful again. Tourism $ will increase. The city of Niagara Falls also needs cleaned up, fresh managment ideas and jobs. We need corporations and factories to make Niagara Falls home.
I love the Niagara Falls and the Buffalo area, things are improving.
@@jasoningram4617 They determined the expense would be too enormous, like you said would probably come back. I think it looks interesting and natural the way it is. It's still a big attraction and the Canadian side will always be more of an attraction because that's the side you can see both falls from.
@@aslmad1 And not just that - the rocks are actually supporting the ledge. So the risk might not be worth the investment.

Apparently it's only 2-3 feet deep on average above the falls.

The deepest part of the Niagara gorge is right below the Horseshoe Falls at 167 feet. It’s as deep as the falls are high!
@@evilemperordude 1.5 -2 ft on the American Falls because it is 6 feet higher than the Horseshoe Falls. 6 feet deep at the Horseshoe Falls, which is why it doesn't have rocks at the bottom (talus). The force of the 6 foot deep water has carved out the riverbed below the falls, and the broken rock falls below the surface.

They should actually build a flood gate at the top there so they can close it whenever they need to. Then again it's humans destroying more of nature's beauty, isn't it?

Americans should have left it; think of all their ill fated projects they could have built.

what a dumb film , they should have filmed the water stopping and all so the water returning . All we have here is no better than a photo , whats the point in even filming it ????
The water stopping and starting again were slow processes. They had to build the damn and later take it apart. You would have to be willing to watch about 100 hours of film total.
