- Neon tester/ terminal driver gets tested on a few thousand volts.
Not a good prospect if you were on the end of it, and you had it in your hand and inadvertently made contact with a few thousand volts.
Strongly advise to use a proper insulated screwdriver for terminals.
Use a proper voltage tester like a fluke with 2 probes to get a definitive answer to weather there is voltage or not.
Always ensure that your test equipment is rated for the voltage you want to test or work on.
Where ever possible do not work on live equipment moving wires about.
Play safe !
I think if you're using a screwdriver to test 8,000 volts OR if there is a 8,000 volts current in your domestic outlet, the screwdriver quality is the least of your problems.

The guys that work on live power pylon lines up to a Megavolt wear conductive suits to prevent the corona discharge from their hands. I was yakking to a guy in Canada who did the early live line research and he said that when he held a spanner out at arms length it was fizzing with sparks like a tesla coil.
Even the guys who do live line work at 30kV with gloves and other barriers say that the capacitive coupling can get quite tingly on their skin.

I particularly like the garage mechanics version of this screwdriver that has a croc lead that plugs into the end. When the croc lead isn't plugged in it looks identical to the mains tester, but there's just a 12v lamp inside. I wonder how many people have tested the mains with that!

Actually bad memories for me with a mis-labelled test bulb that was 12v instead of 240v, i was lucky to be in a crouch position so i jumped back with a hand stuck on the test "screwfryer"

I can tell you - from stupid experience- that it gives you a nasty shock. But because the point of contact is small and at the top, it’s nothing too bad at mains voltage.
When the photonic induction guy says a tool is too dangerous to use, you wanna make sure it doesn't come within a thousand yards of you or your loved ones.

Using a test device that is clearly rated for use testing up to a maximum of 500v on an 8000volt potential. Is like fitting a 1000hp engine into a Morris Minor, and then complaining that the brakes and handling are not good enough.

It's not German logic, that's the logic of a given standard which dictates under which conditions can something land on the market and claim to protect against XY. Lot of the times, these standards take into account even theoretical situations which are extremely unlikely to actually occur.
The massive safety margin also factors in wear and tear over it's expected lifetime. The insulation is likely to be thinner after 10 years of use reducing it's resistance.

Wow, that was a very detailed reply to my comment :) Yes, I understand what you are saying, I just wanted to saythat some products exceeds their designed limits, while some other cheap products don't even come close to their claimed quality.
You can find 5000V rated screwdrivers on ebay which would fail under 1000V.
The red and yellow screwdriver is constructed of metal (the tip) plastic (the red bits) and rubber (the yellow bits).
Ariel Barton Normal screwdrivers don't need to worry about high voltage, so the steel bit is glued directly into the handle. With high voltage around, You need to minimize conductivity. With an electrician's screwdriver, the bit is completely isolated from the handle by the shaft, to prevent extreme voltages from jumping through the handle molding into your hand. Ordinary plastic would melt under a few thousand volts, not only electrocuting you but melting into your hand. These not only withstand high voltage, but as you saw, don't melt under heat.

The metal shaft goes from tip up to the handle like any other screwdriver. The difference is that an electricians screwdriver is 1) always red, 2) always has an insulation sleeve on the shaft to prevent accidental grounding/connections to unintended conductors (exposed wire, the junction box, anything else grounded or energized), and 3) always has thick insulation on the handle to make current flow unlikely.
This is why they're always so pricey... because they can save your life.
P.s. always keep them clean and dry... having water or oil on the surface defeats the whole point. ;)

So let me get this straight... this screwdriver is supposed to light up if it probes a live terminal? Those high tension tests were certainly showing rather vibrant illumination... seems it's working perfectly fine!
My father has one of those testing screwdrivers. It is very good and handy if you only use it for 240 volts. Hungary btw
No it's not. You need to touch something conductive to get a decent light out of the neon, which is in itself dangerous. If you are well insulated the light is very dull and you might not even see it. So the tester would tell you "OK no voltage" and then you fry yourself because there was. Don't use them. Also they are made in 12V versions with just a shitty little print with the voltage.. grab the wrong one once and stick it into the mains and be prepared to be quite suprised.
My Dad had one of those in the Late 90's... Never Tried it in a Live Socket etc

Back in the day I used this type of screwdriver tester all the time, after watching this video I started checking my screwdriver for damage and only tap the top briefly when used, a few years back I spotted rust and water inside the screwdriver, now I use a chicken stick

The 1kV driver did well. I wonder how well it would do after it had seen some heavy use and been kicking around in a toolbox for a while though. That said, I recently got a new pair of snips and submerged the handles of the well used ones in salty water and did a 1kV megger test between the water and metalwork. They tested fine.

You can see the plastic is of a very durable kind. Not like that cheap shit from China.

Those "daft" little neon screwdrivers must have saved countless lives. They are easy to deploy, therefore more probing takes place , and therefore live conductors that are either expected , or supposed to not be live, are detected in a timely way.
Having worked in the industry for decades, I can say that I've encountered many reports and personal experiences of these things averting accidents. The only case I have ever encountered of a person being shocked via one, was when I felt a tingle after I'd customized the tool for testing an electric fence. I had elongated the handle and added insufficient (initially) resistors to make it operate at around 20kv. I ended up adding about 30Meg ohm ( if I remember rightly ) to get it to work.
Ofcourse it's possible to soak one in water and thereby short out the resistor , and get shocked, but I've never known of this happening . I guess one can manage to have an accident with anything - that's what the Darwin awards are about. But these handy and inexpensive devices DEFINITELY save more lives than they take - a bit like seat belts.
Sometimes a neutral wire disconnected from the main neutral bus will float live via a an appliance . A neon screw driver will detect such a live neutral , when most other test devices would not. As long as one remembers not to probe voltages exceeding the rated voltage on the tool, and one doesn't play submarines with them prior to using, they are very safe. One must also remember that they don't light up when probing the secondary sides of transformers. If you use these things intelligently, there is no danger. What is actually dangerous, is telling amateurs not to use these things. Joe Bloggs is not going to spend loads of money on an expensive tester, that he may not understand how to use or read properly, but he will buy a neon tester. If he doubts the neon, and so fails to probe, then you do have a dangerous situation.
Remember folks, don't use your neon testers to probe 50,000 volt installations.
And don't listen to idiots telling you not to use them. They are perfectly safe used intelligently to probe normal household mains voltages.

I've never had one fail on 240 (luckily I guess) but I've seen one fail in someone else's hand, coinciding with a power surge. They have no tolerance whatsoever. He was alright thankfully - good old 'left hand in pocket' rule. It's a shame the CK kits come with one included...

Meaningless comparison. I have used (and still possess) German-made Neon screwdrivers that would fail just as spectacularly. I have also a Chinese-made HV probe (2kV rating) that is VERY capable of withstanding comparable overvoltage (and contains a fully-encapsulated HV resistor string). Having tested the probe at 10kV ( with excellent (microamp) current leakage) the Chinese quality (for a price, mind you) is no different to any other supplier. You get what you pay for. Qualilty costs, whether from China, Germany, or anywhere else.
nice to know my chosen screwdrivers are safe, and the first thing an engineer did whilst i was an apprentice, was take the neon driver out my box and throw it in the bin, i do the same to my apprentices now.

I remember when I studied electronic weapons systems for the NAVY was told to never use those neon test screwdrivers, we were all issued fully insulated ones, nice to see a direct display of why.
I was shocked once I took apart a microwave and I forgot to discharge the high voltage capacitor and boom it hurt a lot moral of the story: don't be stupid

That was a very interesting video. Since many people are experimenting with tesla coils and flyback transformers (including me) I would really like to know the breakdown voltage of some epoxy resins. So if you have some destructive potential (and time) left for this experiment that would be awesome :)

Mate of mine was almost killed by one of these on a standard single phase 230v supply - somehow the voltage bridged and it exploded, and I mean literally exploded. We later reckoned it had moisture in it. Spend £20 and get a Fluke non-contact tester
