    ***Clarification about the studs needed for the bridge: In the video I mention that I upgraded the factory studs to FR ones. I didn't realize the 84' doesn't come with replacement studs and in the hustle of filming the install accidentally left the stock studs in. I have since learned from some viewers that they have trouble getting Floyd Rose studs to screw into the factory anchors. I will say I never noticed any issue with the playability with leaving the factory studs in, to the point my dumbass thought i had swapped them the entire time. The best practice is to upgrade the studs from the zinc alloy to stainless steel ones, but If you don't want to mess with redrilling the anchors to accommodate the new studs, the factory ones work fine. In theory the idea is that the zinc studs may wear out over time since the steel knife edge in contact with them is a harder material, I'd imagine this will take a considerable amount of time and use to take place however, so it may be a non-issue for most peeps. ✌🏽

    Yeah i liked this guitar so much upgraded for Gotoh. I dont have the tools to drill studs, so went for luthier and it was 220€ upgrade with parts. Also there was minor crack near the stud and this repair was also included in the price. Back of the neck is getting sticky need to sand it and do some fret leveling. Gotoh was ok with ibanez studs, but they were worn and didnt really return to perfect tuning. With Gotoh studs its way better and i recommend installing them.

    hey man great video, very informative! would you be able to talk in a bit of detail about the studs? I want to get a new trem but not spend floyd rose money so ive been looking at the gotoh 1996t and the schaller lockmeister 6. the gotoh studs are an issue so do you know if the schaller studs are a direct fit? thanks man, any knowledge regarding studs would help. I ended up sticking with the ibanez factory studs as all third party studs seem to be too wide for the stock anchors in the guitar. I haven't had any issues with it. Someone just commented the other day that they successfully drilled and installed the gotoh studs in theirs. Apparently you'll have to go up from 8mm to 13mm hole for the anchor.

    The Gotoh GE1996T is not a drop in replacement(it will require a little bit of work) perse, the treble side will scrape the body a little due to the recessed knife edge the plate protrudes a little too far. This doesn't happen when you replace the studs because the studs are slightly larger fixing the problem.
    Personally the Jem Jr is not great I am not a fan of it at all The body wood is way too soft, and the grain of the jatoba fretboard doesn't feel right, the inlays protrude in some areas due to Labor/pricepoint constraints, The neck is not all that great in fit and finish and I have seen enough of them be scrapped because the defect rate is kind of high due to cheap nature of the guitar. Ibanez in general is one of those if its under $1000 you are taking a gamble on quality and you can end up with a fantastic great one, some models are better than others, or a turd that you need to return. Some of them feel more like toys than a legit proper instrument for some reason.

      @CHIBIXULTRA  2 роки тому +1

      Chris, thanks for that. You could probably get more mileage out of the guitar with upgraded pickups for sure. The stock ones are fine, just nothing with any wow factor to it. If it were me id swap the bridge with something like a suhr ssh+ or a duncan nazgul or something. It just needs a little more impact with high gain riffing. I think the middle and neck positions sound plenty fine stock. Im not really a fan of the dimarzio sound so i cant comment on the evo’s. Plenty of people like them though.

    Wonderful video! I have a few questions about the tremolo upgrade on this guitar. I have one myself, and it is currently in pieces on the floor 😅. It mostly has to do with the studs. I (like many others) have looked at changing it out for a Gotoh 1996. You mentioned that the studs that come with the Gotoh won't work.
    1. If I buy, say, Floyd studs. Will the stud screws go into the existing threads in the guitar or will I still have to replace the "sleeve"
    2. If I were to step up and get a nicer Schaller Lockmeister 6, will those screws go into the existing "sleeves" or will I still have to figure out how to get them in (I have limited wood working skills).
    Also, a side question (if you've tried the Gotoh), is it "lower" than the stock tremolo on this guitar. I find the height of the stock unit to be a little cumbersome sometimes when you do palm-muting for example. The Schaller would be nice for this reason as well since it is much flatter it seems, but if the Gotoh is a little lower then I'd still consider it.
    Also, I'm not a heavy trem user whatsoever, so perhaps I could get away with stock studs (although they look worse for wear) and a Gotoh 🤔
    I love the paint work you did on yours, looks amazing 😄

    • @CHIBIXULTRA
      @CHIBIXULTRA  2 роки тому +1

      I recommend leaving the stock studs in. You can also try getting a pair or Floyd rose studs online and seeing if they screw in. The issues are with the cheap metal (zinc alloy) in the Ibanez and how malleable the knife edge is on the actual bridge. The studs will take considerable abuse before wearing down as they shouldn't be zinc alloy like bridge piece, but rather just steel. Floyd rose specials also use steel studs, it's typically the bridge itself that is the weak link. I hope that helps!

    • @CHIBIXULTRA
      @CHIBIXULTRA  2 роки тому

      @@lowkeystarlord9545 What I was referring to is that the studs on the floyd rose special and ibanez should both be steel, not zinc alloy like the actual bridge is made of. So, using the stock studs, or any studs that happen to fit the guitar, won't undermine the effectiveness of the mod as much as I previously thought.

    Excellent video man - Question; So you stamped in the video that as well as the 1984, that the Gotoh GE1996T, Schaller Lockmeister and the FR 1000 are direct replacements without he need to drill, bevel or any of that crap. . When I check, there is about 6 different versions of this trem, do you have any clue which one is the direct replacement by any chance before I take a £200+ nose dive? lol
    Thanks in advance.

    • @CHIBIXULTRA
      @CHIBIXULTRA  Рік тому

      They are all drop ins, the only issue you will find with them is the studs they come with may not fit the drill hole of the factory studs, you can just keep using the ibanez studs. I recommend the gotoh, it's the cheapest, has the most documented installs online, and performs just as well as the rest. I only went with the floyd because I got a stellar deal on it. the schaller will probably be the hardest to get at a good price. So just choose the one you gravitate to the most.

    • @xttocx
      @xttocx Рік тому

      @@CHIBIXULTRA the Schaller is the one I was gravitating towards as I find that the most comparable, they're all the majority of Caparison models, I was just curious about the studs tbh, does no one machine stainless steel or titanium studs anywhere at the same size as required, for me that a big deal breaker tbh, it's such an integral part of the trem process

    Hey, awesome video! What would I need to do if I simply want to replace the pickguard for the JEM Jr with a new one? Is there more soldering work necessary to remove and reattach the electronics, or is it as simple as unscrewing the old one and putting in the new one? I'm just a regular ol' guitar player who isn't used to working with electronics, so I'm a bit scared of messing something up.

    • @CHIBIXULTRA
      @CHIBIXULTRA  2 роки тому

      Thanks Anish! To replace the pickguard all you would need to do is remove the screws, the knobs, the switch tip and the washer holding the knob shafts in. nothing would need to be de-soldered for that procedure. Hope that helps! The screws for the pickups are a different length than the other pickguard screws so just make sure you don't mix them up and that should be it.

      Thanks Sean! I had planned on top coating, but considering the placement and how well the marker tacked (these are meant to be hard-to-remove graffiti markers) I don’t think it’s necessary. If it was going in a high friction area that was less protected, It’s typically a good idea to top coat. Hope that’s helpful.

But what does the numbers on the bridge mean,ibenez jem jr says 34 on it what does that mean! And on the gotohge 1996t says 36 please help

    • @CHIBIXULTRA
      @CHIBIXULTRA  2 роки тому

      Hey paul, the number on the sustain block is referring to just the size of the sustain block itself in millimeters. So the stock Ibanez trem has a 34mm block. My Floyd rose came with a 37mm block, You can swap blocks for others of different sizes and materials, some higher end brands advertise benefits for things like titanium or naval brass blocks all the way up to 42mms or more. The only thing the block size will affect is the clearance for the backplate. So 37mm can just barely fit in the jem jr with the backplate on ( i just leave mine off), anything smaller than 37mm will fit perfect, anything MORE than 37mm and you'll have to leave the backplate off, which doesn't really do anything to the tone, its just personal preference.
