This is a crazy theory. I think Kuina's death was not a true illness but Ichimongi taking her life. If a users haki is fully drained they can die. What if she started developing haki and grabbed the sword and it left her with only so long to live? Like how Enma made Zoros arms shrink almost to the bone when he first used it.
