This game it's a gem. Combat is brutal, punishing, with tension, is like fighting in first prince of persia, but way better. I've been dying countless times on the same enemy, but was my fault. Nowdays, when games are way eassy by default, this game is like a drop of hope for gamers who seek an old day gaming adventure.
Thank you so much for your analysis of the combat system. I was going to buy the game just for that but you made it clear that it is just not worth it. Thank you for your honest and well thought out review!
Wow, interesting take. I absolutely loved this game. the combat, the atmosphere and the multiple ways to get out of certain situations was great. I played through it twice back to back and will do a veteran run soon. I found the combat to be rewarding too, because as you learn it's mechanics, you get better at it. In the see of Souls-likes that's out there, Unto the End felt challenging yet fresh.
Great review, you've nailed it. There was very little that looked appealing to me with this one, it seemed to be getting more interest than I expected, you're right there isn't anything out there quite like this, but a lot of games do a lot of things better. Below did that darkness and loneliness well. A great combat system was created in Creature in the Well. It's easy to recommend The Messenger as a great action platformer. Sundered and Guacamelee are two of my all time favourite games with great combat and platforming. Sorry, I'm rambling, I could list more lol. I can understand why those dark sections don't show up in the promo stuff, it looks like the tedious underwater areas some games have haha.
After dying like 30+ times to a spear enemy I came to a realisation the game is not just hard, but unfair. Your character is just too slow to react & most battles are won by just pure luck. If you happen to guard high then want to switch to low at the last second, the character cycles back through the normal standard stance first, which takes a half to one second all up! By then you're generally dead.
Really spot on to me and my thoughts when playing this game.. Really adore the artstyle and atmospher of the game and by looking at it was ready to buy but trying it out on Xbox gamepass and the things you mention first with the darkness of the game.. Its so damn dark even with the torch.. I really love the ideas sound and atmospher clearly is its strongest point.. The weakest point is the combat.. It just feel sluggish as you said maybe too ambitious for a 2D platformer.. The ideas are great but it just end up becoming more frustrating rather than fun or challenging..the combat just isnt enjoyable at all and tho. I really would like to love this game for its art, sound and atmospher.. That combatsystem just ruin it for me although it got some good ideas its just poorly exicuted here But great review 👍
Hey Mark! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. We are glad to hear that you found the review helpful. I agree with you on the combat. It's really interesting in concept but it just didn't click with me.
I agree with you 100% I feel like the combate is hard for hard sake. When one talks about hard games like Dark Souls it’s hard and challenging but FAIR. I feel like this game is more frustrating than anything. I was about to purchase the game after playing it on GamePass but decided against it.
It's a shame. I love the overworld vistas but I can't stand these overly dark underworld setups, the low lights literally give me headaches while playing.
Played the first 30 minutes on a friends PS5. Looks good but 25 euros on switch and it’s over after 3 hours?? Well then please take of like 20 bucks :D
What do you think will you be checking out Unto The End? Thanks so much for all of your support of I Dream of Indie!!
I was thinking of bying unto the end but this review mcemented my decision. I'll probably get it for christmas.
Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

Glad that you enjoyed the game!
Hope they patch the fighting to make it smoother. Was excited for this game
Yeah, some people may enjoy it as is. Wasn't our cup of tea is all.

Glad that you found the review helpful synapticmulch. Unfortunately the overly ambitious combat system just wasn't for me in this one.
Amazing video. Keep it up
Thanks, will do!

Yes, the combat we also found to be a frustrating experience.
Nice review...how can I still be on the fence about it though?
Perfectly normal to feel that way. You can always take advantage of that sale price or wait for a sale.

@@galactus4mac Been playing on GP too & the combat is completely borked. Whether it can be improved or patched remains to be seen.

Fair enough!!
Did you just say 5-6 SECONDS? You good?
I actually just counted as I included the load screen in the review and it's closer to 10 seconds per death. Even longer than I thought!
By this review, I can tell you were not a fan of doom 3... Dark beyond reason and couldn't use gun with flashlight...
Pretty different games but I never played a ton of Doom 3 to be honest.
Terrible combat system and it feel really sluggish. Disappointing game
sorry it didn't click with you Koj!
